I have a hard time arguing against the rankings when the Bears are in the top 5. They've been on a tear lately; just have to guard against a letdown after the big win over Detroit. The impromptu offensive line should be OK with swapping Edwin Williams in for Chris Williams, but getting Carimi back is probably a bigger priority now than before.

Elsewhere, WTF is up with the Ravens? I know that Seattle is just trolling people at this point, but I don't understand how a team can sweep the Steelers and yet lose to SEA and JAX.

The AFC is a grab bag at this point. Houston is playing musical injuries, Steelers can't beat the Ravens, Ravens can't beat bad teams, the Patriots are more erratic than they've been in years, and somehow the goddamn Bengals have a shot at a playoff bye. Does anyone want to win this conference?

Seattle trolls. It's an NFL FACT!

As for Jacksonville, Baltimore plays to the level of their opponent and Jacksonville kinda sucks.

As a Ravens fan:

The logical part of me says, they just aren't playing well enough for 6th.

The fan in me say to rank them lower so they always play as the underdog, which seems to get them rallied up.

I think a lot of people are having a hard time figuring out who the Ravens really are. Beat Pittsburgh, lose to Jacksonville.... I mean, what do you do?

Sadly, it would seem that many of those people get paychecks signed:

netweavr: As for Jacksonville, Baltimore plays to the level of their opponent

The Steelers have a tendency to do that as well. They have lost to terrible teams and beat amazing ones (Patriots). They just can't beat the Ravens in the regular season, but I like to think they're just saving up for the playoffs. They have got to start doing something about that turnover differential, and I swear every game against the Ravens they let em dink and dunk up and down the field. The Ravens 3rd down conversion rate against the Steelers is like 235%.

Anybody still saying this is Detroit's year?

2011-11-15 01:19:35 PM
The twin beatdowns in the NFC North this week were epic. I was happy for all the Lions fans this year finally having a decent team, but the team themselves seem to want everyone to hate them. So be it, then. Glad to see them lose.

It's sad how badly the Lions and Bills balloons have popped. I kinda feel bad for their fans.

I'm pretty sure they don't have the ESPN Power Rankings up on the bulletin board at Ratbird Stadium. And while I agree that last week they didn't play well enough for 6th, they will not be an underdog to any team the rest of the year, even though they might end up losing to them.

The Steelers are on one hell of a roller coaster. When the Ravens beat them again they had to have been thinking that their playoff hopes got that much tougher. Then they beat the Bengals and the Ratbirds lost to Seattle... it's not the Seahawks that are trolling, it's the Ravens. They can beat the best teams in football but go down like dogs to the bottom-feeders? I'm OK with that as a Steelers fan. I think it would be a real kick in the ass if they kept this up and blew the playoffs in favor of the Bengals. In fact, next weekend I'm one of the Bengals' biggest fans. If they lose I'm OK with that too, but I'd prefer to see them win.

You can chill anytime, bro. You're going to have a kick-ass offense under Andy Reid next year. Some with the defense under Rex Ryan. They'll get along great with the new head coach, no matter who it ends up being.

So Eli throwing for 311 yards and two TD's is self destructing and Alex smith throwing for 242 yards with a TD, with no running game has nothing to do with him as a QB it has to do with Eli self destructing?

Just want to make sure I understand your reasoning here.

No, but they all know the rankings, the lines, the "who's gonna win". They read ESPN, NFL.com, etc.

AnotherBluesStringer: Anybody still saying this is Detroit's year?

Detroit has as good a chance at the playoffs as the Cowboys, Falcons, and Bears do. They'll hit 10 wins if they can take care of business outside of the Packers and Saints games, and they have a better than average shot at knocking the Packers off on Thanksgiving.

Losing 3 of 4 is pretty bad, but they have the talent to bounce back. Their coach is a bozo, but they have a good team.

the good thing about Arizona sucking as bad as we do, is that with the Eagles giving away another 4th quarter lead (their 5th, as I recall), the attention isn't on us in that had Arizona lost that game, that also would have been the 5th (or so) 4th quarter gag job. we led the Giants, Washington, Ravens (more of a second half gag job), and I think Seattle in the 4th quarter. And almost gave that one away.

and once again, to the haters lolling the lol of "lol, the 49ers play the NFC west, overrated!".......

The Ravens have played more NFC West games (three) than the 49ers (one). 5 of SFO's remaining 7 are vs the NFC West.

So it looking very good that the NFC Championship goes through SFO. SFO can likely hope to increase their win total whereas Packers have a tougher schedule (with a fwe cupcakes, admittedly).

Quasar: I kinda feel bad for their fans.

I can't say anything about Bills fans, but Lions "fans" can kindly go fark themselves. The team had a good start, and they came out of the woodwork and started acting like dicks. I'm happy watching the team implode to irrelevancy once again.

My own "power ranking" through week 10:

Rank | Team (last week) | Score
1. Green Bay Packers (1) 2.479
2. San Francisco 49ers (2) 2.306
3. Pittsburgh Steelers (10) 1.912
t4. Detroit Lions (3) 1.896
t4. Chicago Bears (8) 1.896
6. New England Patriots (9) 1.883
7. New Orleans Saints (11) 1.876
8. Houston Texans (14) 1.870
9. Baltimore Ravens (4) 1.854
10. Cincinnati Bengals (5) 1.801
11. New York Giants (6) 1.778
12. Buffalo Bills (7) 1.654
t13. Oakland Raiders (16) 1.633
t13. New York Jets (12) 1.633
15. Dallas Cowboys (18) 1.632
16. Atlanta Falcons (13) 1.605
17. Tennessee Titans (19) 1.565
18. Denver Broncos (21) 1.471
19. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (15) 1.448
20. San Diego Chargers (17) 1.388
21. Seattle Seahawks (25) 1.255
22. Kansas City Chiefs (20) 1.249
23. Jacksonville Jaguars (26) 1.179
24. Philadelphia Eagles (22) 1.173
25. Cleveland Browns (23) 1.119
26. Washington Redskins (24) 1.060
27. Minnesota Vikings (27) 1.043
28. Arizona Cardinals (29) 1.034
29. St. Louis Rams (30) 0.965
30. Carolina Panthers (28) 0.937
31. Miami Dolphins (31) 0.701
32. Indianapolis Colts (32) 0.494

These are completely objective rankings, which are figured by adding a team's actual winning percentage (PCT) to the strength of their schedule (opposing teams' combined winning percentage, minus head to head games, or OPCT). To emphasize actual performance, I multiply each team's PCT by two. (PCT * 2) + OPCT.

This does not take into account injuries, head to head record (except as it factors into the numbers above), recent winning/losing streaks, or how much talent a team allegedly has. I still think it's pretty accurate.
