If I get prostate cancer it's because some woman on the pill is pissing in my aquafer. Wow.

2011-11-15 12:25:24 PM
Ok... I will remember that in my next prostate exam then.

Wait...what?

2011-11-15 12:25:46 PM
Dude, it's not supposed to be a suppository.

2011-11-15 12:26:59 PM
Do these suppositories come in any other flavors?

There was an episode of House that had something similar. Guy was taking male hormones or something which was transfered to his kids when he touched them.

I thought you were supposed to stick it up that little hole in the end of your dick, my mistake.

Even for a House episode that sounds stupid.

DON'T DRINK THE WATER!!!!

THE WOMEN ARE PISSING IN IT!!!!!

FTFA

"The authors suggested that estrogen from birth control pills may be excreted through women's urine, ending up in water supply systems"

Umm isn't your "suggestion" easily testable?

Is there increased levels of said chemicals in the water?

Try again... Societies that have birth control methods publicly available live longer. Men who live longer will eventually get prostrate cancer.

Because People in power are Stupid: Try again... Societies that have birth control methods publicly available live longer. Men who live longer will eventually get prostrate cancer.

I was thinking just that. Correlation ≠ Causation.

2011-11-15 12:35:00 PM
Sounds like a bad case of "Correlation != causation". I bet there's also a correlation between GDP per capita and prostate cancer, too.

I'm trying to convince my doctor to prescribe me Progesterone, so this is relevant to my interests.

Finally a new way to convince liberal women to accidentally become full with my progeny; poking holes in condoms was getting so old.

This year's Susan G. Komen race will be better than ever!

Dr #1: Hmmm what could be causing higher rates of prostate cancer?
Dr #2: Dunno, birth control pills?
Dr #1: Brilliant!

I LOL'd. Well done.

I dunno about that. My wife has never become pregnant from buttsecks ever since she started taking her birth control as a suppository.

I know some (male) teens who were given birth control pills to control acne. Used to be a source of jokes for us.

2011-11-15 12:42:13 PM
Plus, only a small part of the water supply is used for toilet use, and only small part of toilet use is from women on birth control, etc.

I'd be willing to bet there's much more animal growth hormones in the water supply than birth control hormones.

I didn't see the episode, but guys who use a testosterone patch or other transdermal route ARE advised to wash their hands thoroughly after application, and keep the area covered. In addition, Pregnant women are advised not to handle the patches.

As to the original article -- nobody tell the Fundies. They'll try to use it as an excuse to say that god is punishing men for farking without baby-making or somesuch.

Rates of prostate cancer are higher in countries where there is a greater use of the oral contraceptive pill, a new study suggests.

You mean, "developed countries"? Surely there aren't any other correlating factors that could explain this! Developed countries have nothing else in common except birth controll pills!

Oh. It was a patch based hormone therapy. Never mind then, carry on.

Or another correlation =/= causation explanation:

Women on the pill often have a lowered sex drive because of the hormones. Increased frequency of ejaculation is known to be associated with lower rates prostate cancer*. The husbands/partners of women on the pill have less sex and few opportunities for masturbation, hence rising rates of prostate cancer.

*Why yes, I did learn that on Fark.

Seriously, women, stop pissing in my goddam water supply. Sloppy whores and your birth-control.

That's a really weird correlation to publish. Do you have any data to prove a causation?

So you mean there is a greater risk of prostate cancer in developed countries? Do you think Type II Diabetes is caused by LCD Televisions? Farking hacks

2011-11-15 12:53:21 PM
I bet its because women are cleaner in countries that have access to the pill. And by cleaner I mean far more likely to be provided oral sex by their male partners. So lets just forget about this, whole I got it from drinking contaminated water bullshiat and admit it because we take it straight from the source.

2011-11-15 12:53:56 PM
KatjaMouse: I was thinking just that. Correlation ≠ Causation.

Indeed. Whee! Horrible epidemiology for the win! I'd put money on "better general medical care leads to higher birth control pill use leads to higher preventative medicine visits in the population leads to higher detection of prostate cancer," if we're all gonna pull correlations out of our asses. Where's my publication?

Whaddaya call a gang of post-docs with a tenuous grip on statistics, access to huge databases and a burning need to generate grant funding? The Epidemiology Department! If it ain't randomized, double-blinded and placebo-controlled, it ain't shiat.

OK, maybe that's not entirely fair... but it's not entirely unjustified... Epidemiology has its place, but that place is limited and conclusions drawn from it need to be very carefully made.... Unfortunately, "carefully made" and "accurately reported" conclusions aren't the media's strong suit.

2011-11-15 12:54:22 PM
About half the prostate cancer diagnoses are false positives. The more prostate cancer screens performed the more men are diagnosed. One out of every eight men tested for prostate cancer will test positive, even though they do not have cancer. Link (new window)

For many countries 13 cycles of oral contraceptives is too expensive. In the US for many folks the price got too high due to a Bush era federal law change "For [these women] this is like a choice - groceries or birth control." Link (new window)

More extensive health care = more OC use and more prostate cancer screenings. The first is OK, the second, not so much.

One problem if we're going to have a prostate cancer awareness campaign: what color ribbon do we use?

Because People in power are Stupid: Try again... Societies that have birth control methods publicly available live longer. Men who live longer will eventually get prostrate cancer.

Except prostate cancer isn't just a disease for very old men any longer. My urologist says prostate cancer is starting to show up in increasing numbers among men in their 30's. He doesn't know if it's better testing or what, but clearly something's causing it to occur in younger men.

Correlation? Causation? Prostate cancer may just as well be caused by the merger of the AFL and NFL. Only men play in the NFL and only men get prostate cancer. This can't be a coincidence. Just look at the time lines and the proof is clear!

2011-11-15 01:17:31 PM
Is this a joke? There must be thousands of factors in developed countries that also correlate with prostate cancer, right?

I also find it very difficult to believe that these compounds get into water for consumption in high enough amounts to cause any effects whatsoever.

Brown?

If prostate cancer is being caused by exposure to female hormones, i suspect that the phytoestrogens in soy (which is in EVERYTHING, not just vegan fake meat, and it's also used as animal feed) are a more likely source than trace amounts of BC pills in the water.

And, from I understand, it's a fairly big "if."

Um, that makes no sense. I'm M2F, I'm taking bucketloads of estrogen compared to what you'd get from women pissing, and my prostate cancer risk is reduced as a result.

well, I guess I had better quit using birth control. I'll tell my hubby I'm just thinking of the safety of his butthole.

If you stop taking the pills, you'll be putting the safety of your butthole at risk.

My Hypothesis:

1) Women are on birth control.

2) Men have sex with women on birth control without using condoms.

3) Women on birth control have HPV.

4) Man contracts HPV from women on birth control.

5) HPV causes prostate cancer.

5) No test for men available on whether they have HPV.

6) Men get prostate cancer because of birth control.

7) Profit???
