The Big Bang Theory would be a funny sitcom, subby, if the "actors" could get out of the way of the writing.

More... intensity.

Big Bang Theory...Amos 'n Andy for nerds.

"Relatively funny" when compared to the BBC's 30-part series on the history of cheese.

Well, that's a bit harsh. Though, to be fair, without Bill Murray ad libbing the living shiat out of it and more or less ignoring the script and direction I guess it would have sucked pretty hard.

Petit_Merdeux: "Relatively funny" when compared to the BBC's 30-part series on the history of cheese.

Well, except for the section on Wensleydale. That was freakin' hilarious.

This. And even I liked that movie.

Whoa, did not know that. And I love that movie pretty intensely.

Watched one episode of the Big Bang Theory and thought it was downright retarded, though.

So you trolled me good, subby.

So you have some Wensleydale?

There was something else in Lost in Translation that made it worthwhile, if I think on it maybe I'll remember.

Some people laugh watching Big Bang Theory. Some people don't get it. I get it, cringe, and watch something else.

The show's about maladjusted nerdy man-children. Why on earth would anyone but an unreformed maladjusted nerdy man-child want to identify with it?

skodabunny: If you find The Big Bang Theory funny you probably have learning difficulties.

Eh, while I'm a bit personally offended that the group being made to look stupid are academics, I don't think it's any more fundamentally retarded than Scrubs, Friends, King of Queens, or any other generic "hurr durr, [x] profession and/or demographic group is dumb, that's why it's funny" sitcom.

Albeit they mix in a lot of family-guy-style "remember when?" nerd reference things, those are pretty universally regarded as dumb as hell.

I swear, I saw this on Cracked, but I can't find it now.

But Scrubs was genuinely funny. And so was Friends. King of Queens I've not seen, so can't comment on. The writing for TBBT seems to be based on the premise that nerds are funny therefore anything that includes nerds must also be funny.

I know, I know, funny is subjective, but the bits of TBBT I've seen have been truly dire.

As an initial Fark.com hater of BBT, I watched a few eps and allowed my hipsterism to drain out of me. After releasing my cynicism, I found myself enjoying.

Hatas gonna hate. True/Cool story brah.

TBBT has stated they don't use laugh tracks. Are y'all saying this is an outright lie?

Sometimes I find it funny, sometimes not. Somethings thinks I thought weren't funny are a second time around depending on my mood or recent events.

But as for the eccentricity of the characters, it's comedy is two-fold: 1) nostalgia from being young and holding important things that were way too trivial (such as arguing about things on the internet?) 2) working professionally with people who are man-children.

2011-11-15 08:35:50 AM
I don't get that show because they lead you to believe that the characters are smart people making smart people jokes, but in reality nearly all of the jokes are pretty dumb. The dialogue is pretty much what average/dumb people THINK that smart people sound like all the time, which is something like Charlie Brown's mother with science terms thrown in.

Also, all the characters act like petulant children. The "regular" girl across the hall is a dumb blonde. It just about insults everyone's intelligence. And, despite the name, the show contains no jokes that a real scientist would find funny for their scientific merit. It's not smart-people humor, it's the dumb-people's version of smart-people humor.

And all my friends love it. Gah.

News flash -- jokes about the top quark without grounding it for laymen don't get laughs.

Anyways, subjectivity of cultural taste FTW, here. I consider myself to be intelligent and I like a lot of "dumb" entertainment -- heavy metal, pro wrestling, redneck outdoor pursuits.

Diff'rent strokes and all that.

And CBS placed it on Thursday opposite Community with the intent on destroying a genuinely funny sitcom.

The first few episodes of BBT were OK, then it got bad, same as with Scrubs. Albeit more because of cameo dependence than recycling, but still.

This just tells me you haven't watched the show beyond the first few episodes. One of the best parts of the show is that they didn't turn Penny into the "dumb blonde". She holds her own against the so called "smarter" guys across the hall.

/the show has its flaws but this isn't one of them

The first two seasons of Friends were pretty funny. Then it became marginally funny. Then it became irritating. Then I wanted to stab everyone through the TV. Then it became Joey and it was sad.

Futurama is a show for geeks, Big Bang Theory is a show about geeks. Big difference. BBT may use a bunch of big sciency words, but it's still the same setup->punchline humor.

Wow, it's been what - a week? (Since the last Lost in Translation hate thread/sub-thread.)

I guess the mod on duty is in a funk because his 4chan is down. And subby belongs somewhere between the Comic Book Guy demographic and the Judd Apatow movies are funny demographic. Not quite urban enough to be a hipster know-it-all, not quite brazen enough to be a full-on douche. Just - annoying.

2011-11-15 09:10:27 AM
The only genuinely funny thing TBBT has done was when all the guys dressed like The Flash (by coincidence), so they decided to walk in the streets like 2-3 feet apart from each other, that would create the illlusion of afterimages and it would look as if Flash was running at super speed.

Other than that, TBBT is an abortion and only dumb people who want to feel SMRT watch it.

Gah, I get a farking raging killing urge whenever I see the girls namedropping TBBT and saying they love nerds.

Oh and Bazzinga! has to be the stupidest single saying ever concocted by the human mind.

WHAT....THE....FARK...IS...THAT?

Stinkyy: Wow, it's been what - a week? (Since the last Lost in Translation hate thread/sub-thread.)

Well, it is a poorly edited, pointless and meandering film with no interesting characters or conflicts that feel particularly well thought out. It's like somebody handed an artsy film about alienation to Hollywood executives who retooled it into something they felt would sell.

Oh... that's exactly what happened.
