It is either a statement or my musical taste that the song which immediately entered my brain upon seeing this headline was Harry Chapin's 30,000 pounds of Bananas^, and I am not really old enough for it be age related.

Those seem like legitimate reasons for a song to *enter* your head, but not necessarily why it would stick. I've recalled many songs for those reasons, but few of them stuck; there has to be something else. One thing that gets songs stuck for me is trying to remember and/or decipher the lyrics, so I'll get a particular verse stuck in my head.

LewDux: I don't remember having an earworm that I didn't like

That seems unusual. It's about 50/50 for me, at least it's been that way in the past. Nowadays I'm less exposed to songs I don't like and about the only time I come across them is when I'm visiting an office or in a store and they're playing whatever "lite-rock" station in the background.

what I found most interesting was the "low attention state" impact on whether or not a song becomes an earworm...
In my experience, the song most likely to get stuck in my head for a long period is that which is playing on the alarm clock when it wakes me from sleep ... makes intuitive sense that the song snippet gets right in past your conscious appreciation of actually hearing it (because you're still largely asleep!).
Often times I will have no idea why I'm humming some piece of a song until I focus and remember that it playing that morning on the alarm...
