I'm sure this story makes a hell of a lot more sense in a different cultural context. Like one where Christianity was an external force brought to the people by a brutal colonial regime, and traditionalist are looking to create some kind of fusion-religion/myth/hagiography that discredits that set of ideas as "externally imposed"-- and uses meddlesome extraterrestrials as stand-ins for white people.

According to ancient Sumerian texts, as interpreted by Laurence Gardner [1], Zecharia Sitchin [2], and others, the Anunnaki ("those who from heaven to earth came") are Extraterrestrials who arrived on the planet Earth after the discovery of gold by a deposed ruler of their race, named Alalu. The discovery eventually led to an Anunnaki mission to Earth to recover as much of this noteworthy example of the Precious Metals as possible.

Also, if you wanted gold, mining a planet for it is asinine. Planetary formation typically draws the heavier minerals to the core, while the less dense ones rise to the surface (that's why there are so few surface deposits of metals).

If you want to mine metals, find a nice asteroid. Those things are pretty much solid metal, and you don't have to do any digging to get it. Just separate the metals and you're good to go.

That would make sense. Otherwise you'd have to rely on some kind of tectonics or magma currents to trap heavier minerals on/near the surface. It's possible, but it would seem to limit their purity and number of deposits.

We already know that all planets in our system have been heavily bombarded by asteroids, and we know that a great many asteroids are pure, or nearly pure, metals.

Seems like a good theory to me.

But that was my point. If you grab an asteroid, you don't have to mine anything. It's just sitting right there waiting for you to refine it. You can build a solar mirror to melt the metals out without having to use much, or any, labour at all.

Also, you don't have the problem of having to lift all that mass out of the planetary gravity well either. Mining asteroids saves you time, effort, energy and having to create a subservient species to dig holes in the dirt for you.

There's effectively never any reason you would want to harvest resources from a planet's surface (or below it). All the elements you could ever need are available in space just waiting to be picked up.
