Don't you just hate waking up like a douche in the middle of the night?

Subby-I thought you were joking...

I think I'll hold off on this until after I buy the 18 CD boxed set of "The Greatest of Dexy's Midnight Runners"

Blinded by the Light
Do Wa Diddy
Spirit in the Night
Might Quinn
For You

Granted, many of their songs they are best known for are covers, but, IMO, they are one of the better versions of the songs. Not a "one hit wonder" like Dexy, et al.

I will step forward then, because I am positive that the lyrics are wrapped like a deuce into the roner of the night.

Nazareth never recorded any songs other than "Hair Of the Dog" and "Love Hurts".
Blue Oyster Cult never recorded any songs other than "The Reaper", "Godzilla" and "Burnin' For You".
Uriah Heep never recorded any songs other than "Easy Livin'" and "Stealin'".

Once went to a MMEB concert in the Tyrolean backwoods, and it was really quite good. Guys knew their instruments. Then again, almost any band from that age has a higher technical level than most post-something "rock" bands of our age.

/I blame punk
//Also really enjoyed a Russ Ballard concert, of all things. Considering that I mostly knew about him as one of the reasons Dio left Rainbow...

I have a few of their LPs. "Chance" is their best, IMO.

The Springsteen version has the lyrics "Cuttin' loose like a deuce", which actually rhymes. Was Manfred Mann worried that Brits wouldn't know what a "deuce" is unless they said "revved up"?

Speaking as a former Brit (recovering) and childhood MM fan, I can confidently state that none of my friends knew what a "deuce" was even with the help of "revved up".

/For the longest time I thought it was "racked up like a deuce", and some sort of craps reference i.e. rolling snake eyes

Jimi Hendrix and the Grateful Dead are also "one hit wonders" according to the standards of what Pink Floyd calls The Machine, but they're still musical legends

In 1976 I turned 16 and my folks gave me their Dodge Dart, complete with 8-track tape player. That summer I had 2 tapes, The Dark Side of the Moon and The Roaring Silence. I wore both of them out. So screw you subby, I loves me some MMEB. And Pink Floyd.

/still anticipates the track change in the middle of the guitar solo in Time. You know, just when it gets good.

Golden Earring has surprisingly good music in their back catalog. They're not stand-out hits but they're listenable rock'n'roll. I think "Kill Me C'est Soir" and "My Killer My Shadow" might be the closest to the two noted that can be brought up, but "Bombay" is catchy as hell.

Even knowing the real lyrics... it still clearly sounds like 'Racked up like a douche'. No matter how hard I listen, I just can't hear 'deuce'.

There are thousands of great young rock players, but you have to go looking for them. Autotuned crap rules the mainstream, as it would have if available back in your day.

Manfred Mann had more than the one album?

Seriously, that song has a special place in music history. If you were alive when it came out, the mere mention can still get the song going in your head (it was played CONSTANTLY for a few months). Also, there are soooo many ways to mishear the song.

Heh. Probably should have added the caveat "according to the dictates of American classic-rock radio" to my initial post. For the bands I mentioned, those are the ONLY songs by those artists that most people ever hear. I am well aware that they have plenty of other fine songs (for example, Secret Treaties is my favorite BOC album).

manfredd mann's band's sound changed tremendously over time, such that i'd have never have guessed songs i knew were from the same band. from flower-child 60s to hard-trippin-70s

the album on which 'blinded by the light' appeared, 'the roaring silence' is one of my favorites, every song on it is an awesome b-side. ...i'll admit you have to be pretty spacy to make it all the way to the organ riffs at the end of 'singing the dolphins through' though.

i wish there were more bands that had organ/synth riffs to compete with guitars
