Maybe installing that 5,000 watt subwoofer in your car wasn't the best of ideas, dawg.

I blame the ear buds in the iPods. Back in my day we lost our hearing the old fashioned way; GnR/Metallica, 1992.

Gee, who would have thought a generation raised on loud music now suffers from hearing problems?

Has anyone ever studied this? Everyone I know who is half-deaf was either born that way or a military gunner.

I know enough people born with only their left ear working that it no longer strikes me as strange.

WHAT???

some.old.lady.: Anyone here dependent on TV captioning?

Only after I turned up the show, only to be blasted and deafened by the commercials.

2011-11-15 03:05:58 AM
All I know is I didn't do my left ear any favors by sitting next to a 20-foot-high bank of speakers at that whatever outdoor concert it was 20-something years ago.

I said, ALL I KNOW IS I DIDN'T DO ....

2011-11-15 03:07:55 AM
Lighting: Everyone I know who is half-deaf was either born that way or a military gunner.

Torpedo tubes did it for me. Kind of a gunner I suppose. 1500 PSI compressed air venting 5 feet away (muffler, yeah right) isn't really conducive to keeping your hearing in tip-top shape.

Mugato: I blame the ear buds in the iPods. Back in my day we lost our hearing the old fashioned way; GnR/Metallica, 1992.

Beastie Boys. 1986.

Or KISS and AC/DC. 1978. On a portable D-battery 8-track with ginormous blue headphones. About as soopafly as an 8 yr old can get.

/Shiat I'm gettin' old.

2011-11-15 03:11:23 AM
Yep. 25+ years of going to metal concerts have taken their toll on my hearing. Was it worth it? Oh hell yes. given that I've seen Iron Maiden 8x, Megadeth 6x, Sabbath/Ozzy more times than I can remember. Being 5 feet away from Steve Harris alone was worth it.

There are some advantages. While sometimes it's hard to hear what other people are saying, it's also easy to ignore what people are saying.

I've been to Pink Floyd, U2, Pearl Jam, Metallica and Van Halen in AZ and other amphitheater and stadium-type stuff.Raves. All sorts of shiat. But I won tix to a Ramones/Black Crows concert in Seattle years ago that was (can't remember the name) at the little theater next to I-5 on Pine St and....fark....I think I got a concussion from that noise.

Deaf in my left ear, from birth. Right one is seriously acute tho. Anyway, the best part about being half-deaf is that if someone is snoring, jerking off, farking, or whatever, I just roll on my good ear and cannot hear a damn thing. Bad news - I can't do that on a work night because I miss the alarm clock.

It's sometimes a curse but often the best gift I have. Seriously, I'll sleep through an atom bomb.

Not to go off topic here, but i've always had this problem with my hearing. Not that i'm deaf, i can hear light feedback on speaker systems no one else can, that high-frequency WEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE in the background, drives me nuts, feels like needles.

The problem i'm talking about is sometimes, when people speak, my brain seems to malfunction and instead of words i hear jumbled nonsensical noises. Think about when you sometimes have a problem with printing a PDF document and instead of reading what you want printed, the document is structured exactly like it was on screen but all you get in the text is "kdgfb nwiasd fnsa93n aoifcahfr9"

I am serious here. Everyone else thinks i'm crazy or just deaf or something.

I've also had mine since I was little, in both ears. I don't notice it most of the day, but can when it's very quiet (especially when it is suddenly quiet). Mine sounds like the high pitched whine that comes from old TV sets, except louder, though I'll occasionally get other sounds like short, slightly lower pitched tones, etc. It's only really bothersome are when it's especially "loud" and I'm trying to sleep or when I hear different pitches from both sides at the same time.

This probably makes me really dorky, but I always pretend that I'm an old analog modem trying to handshake. It helps me get to sleep through it.
