Lord Jubjub: Time to pop some popcorn. . .

Let me know when you've finished so we can start the Republican and/or Democrat jokes.

I think President Obama is doing an admirable job with the Committee which was stated by President Kennedy.

Those differently abled should be allowed exercise their talents and be productive members of society. Appointing this young woman is a positive step in showing what a meaningful contribution we can all make.

Semi-related CSB: I was watching an interview with John c. McGinley last night (Cox from Scrubs) on the whole "Spread the Word to End the Word" campaign and I think he won me over.

I realize this is Fark and all, so I'll probably be accused of being an oversensitive commie-pinko-PC-Nazi, but I kind of feel like "retard" or "retarded" as a slang is rather offensive. Even if the intent isn't there, you're still making people with disabilities (and their families) feel less than human and that knowledge is enough to make me feel like crap.

/Cue "cry some moar," etc.
//Boo hoo hoooo.
///Will stand by my position.

My uncle Jim, greatest guy in the world in my opinion, was mentally retarded, but that was back in the 50's. The stigma was not there at the time. I'm all for developmentally disabled, or whatever the current term is. The word retarded does have a specific meaning, and it fit the bill, but since it became a playground slur it is no longer used. Sooner or later whatever term we use will have the same problem.

The thing is the people that are retarded know they are different, and they know that is OK. My uncle Jim was the happiest guy I ever met. I am honored to be his nephew.

When you're talking about people with Down Syndrome, especially kids, I'm skeptical that they understand the nuance.

With other slurs (against gay people, or black people, or whomever), the "victim" is typically capable of standing up for himself and understands context if it's a joke, etc, but when it's a mentally disabled person, you're sort of picking on the weakest of the weak and the most innocent of the bunch.

"Idiot" and "imbecile" used to be vanilla medical terms as well, but if you used those in reference to someone who was mentally slow, you'd get punched in the face.

"Negro" is technically a correct definition too, but good luck "taking that back." Words change over time in a society.

Ok we'll stop using it in music, and the automotive industry too. Don't want any "intellectually disabled" people entering those fields and having their feelings hurt when they come across a word.

You really think a 10-year-old with Down Syndrome is that tough and smart?

FerneJohn: You really think a 10-year-old with Down Syndrome is that tough and smart?

Yes. The phrase (PC or not) "Retard Strength" exists for a reason.

2011-11-14 10:04:33 PM
you give the word "retarded" the power to hurt when you constantly talk about how hurtful it is regardless of intent or context. stop doing that.

bigbearchaseme: you give the word "retarded" the power to hurt when you constantly talk about how hurtful it is regardless of intent or context. stop doing that.

Words have meaning. I can't change that simply by waving my hand or refusing to acknowledge it.

Calling a mentally disabled person a "retard" is not going to stop being hurtful to them anymore than "fire" is going to stop implying "hot."

I've never heard that phrase. It seems like it was coined by those with no interaction with people with delayed mental development. It is sad they never got to know anyone who likes you just because you are you and took a minute to say hello. There is a young woman on my street who is developmentally disabled, she waves as we drive home from work. Her smile and wave always make me smile no matter how bad my day has been. Think of it, people who have a hard time hating. Maybe it is us who are 'retarded'.

I think we are off the topic here. President Obama appointed a fantastic young woman to an important post where she can indeed make a difference.

Let's give the guy credit for that. It is something for which everyone can support our president. The guy has a tough job, give him a thumbs up now and then.

If they can understand the word, and know the hurtful connotation, then yes. If they can't understand it, or know the hurtful connotation, then it holds no power over them.

Or they could just not care, like us Crackers.

feckingmorons: I've never heard that phrase.

There's 7.5 million google hits for it, so it's out there.

You're right about your story about seeing someone when you're driving by. I used to tutor special needs kids in high school so I know what you're talking about. Granted this was a long time ago, but the word was used often then, and was used by them a ton.

I think the problem with the PC aspect of this is 99.9% of the time when someone uses some form of that phrase there is no intent to belittle or insult someone who is handicapped. Intent IS important. This isn't equivalent to the dreaded N word, because outside of the black community it is nearly always meant as an insult to black people.

Relax francis. I wasn't really arguing against your point, just having fun with the whole "negro is not acceptable anymore" statement.

I think the word "retard" is accurate and all but it would be in poor taste to actually call someone with downs syndrome that term. Like calling someone in a wheelchair "cripple". It's accurate, but their lives are probably rough enough, no need to rub it in. Smacks of "kicking someone when they're down". Which most of us learned was poor manners in gradeschool.

I used to take care of a quadriplegic that went by the nickname "Cripple" in a sort of ironic/taking it back kind of way. Some people still have a sense of humor at least.
