impaler: WTF is a diaspora?

It's an open source social network designed to allow individual users to control their privacy levels and also to allow for decentralization of the diaspora accounts. For instance, a guy with his own webhosting can put up his own diaspora page, rather than being forced to having his diaspora page reside with the diaspora site.

I read about it on Slashdot about a year ago.

Or, maybe, just that Paypal seriously farked up. Their error probably made the whole funding drive seem shaky, and caused a perceived credibility problem. Mistakes in IT have actual consequences in people's lives.

...or yeah, maybe she embezzled $20k.

Diaspora refers to the exile of Jews but it could also refer to any group of people who have dispersion from their original homeland especially in chaotic situations such as civil disturbances and/or wars.

He didn't just "die" - he freaking killed himself. Makes it a much bigger story because it implies that the stress on these young tech geeks running their startups is pretty insane.

You mix young guys who have ZERO business experience with sharky rich investors in a high-risk, high-competition world, guys are going to crack and start offing themselves.

Wow - you have absolutely no idea what you are talking about. I spent a lot of time working for startup companies. Its never like this. Its way too much fun running or being part of the company to go off killing yourself. He clearly had other issues.

Life is short enough, so its time to make it even shorter!

If people just understood brain chemistry, they would be less likely to suddenly off themselves.

Now, self destructive behavior that leads to slow death is something different.

When you get to that kind of emotional low point, I don't think there's much giving a flip about brain chemistry going on.
