mitchcumstein1: 6) Football has fewer games, and when they all count the players, bad as they may be, put out maximum effort at all times. Basketball players take nights off for the same money because there are too many games and they think that people who paid top dollar are OK with that.

True, but it happens in baseball too, people don't call Josh Hamilton a thug.

I remember during the 2010 World Series a local sports show I listen to had nothing to talk about so the hosts were BS'ing about the Rangers. One of the hosts called Ron Washington a crackhead and everybody had a good laugh. Then one of the producers asked, "Why is Ron Washington a crackhead and Josh Hamilton just 'has demons'?" It was all in good fun (none of hosts are racists), but that's one of those things that makes people's ears perk at questionable word choice.

Like how the NBA players are "thugs" while NHL teams have guys on their roster specifically designated to get in fights and act like dicks.

/And didn't a Vancouver Canuck get into an altercation with a fan just last year?

skylabdown: Are you an NBA fan who wants to help the game of basketball?

I mean, REALLY help the GAME itself and not just the money vampires in the NBA?

As a non-NBA fan I have some serious advice:

1. Take the money you were going to spend this season on tickets, jerseys and whatever else the NBA sells and give it to your local HS program, local Rec program or just go buy 10 basketballs and take them into the neighborhood and hand them out to any group of kids you see horsing around. If you've got large amounts of cash ready to spend, sponsor a little league team. By a portable hoop and put it in front of your house on the weekends so the kids in your neighborhood can use it.

/I'm sure there are more ideas, but you get the point.

This thread is full of idiots. DURR YOU LIKE SOMETHING YOU SHOULD JUST SPEND THAT MONEY ON OTHER PEOPLE INSTEAD DURRRRR

You should sell your computer, get rid of your internet, stop watching movies, music, tv, reading, et cetera and just give your money to less fortunate people. Go ahead, give 1 dollar away.

I will give the Sounders this: Along with Chivas, Portland, and maybe New York, they are one of the few MLS clubs that people actually give a shiat about.

I just want to make it to First Hill for food without a jam-up on the 90 every once in awhile, and Seahawks and Mariners traffic was already enough of a pain in the ass.

Coco LaFemme: mitchcumstein1: Coco LaFemme: mitchcumstein1: Coco LaFemme: and would gladly take 1/1000th of what these overpaid, overpriced, spoiled dickholes are making.

Yes, but who the fark want to watch you play? They have a skill you don't have. You don't make that kind of money because you don't have that talent, just because you'd gladly captain an airliner doesn't mean you get to.

They can run up and down a court and throw a basketball into a hoop. That isn't a skill. Brain surgery is a skill. Auto mechanics is a skill. They don't have skills. They have athletic abilities that even people in wheelchairs can figure out. So let's stop acting like these are rare and impressive creatures who exist in a world beyond our greatest imagination. They're farking basketball players, not cancer researchers.

I love sports as much as the next person, and can't wait for baseball to start back up again in February, but I also put them and what they do in their proper perspectives. They are entertainment. A diversion. They are not role models, heroes, geniuses, or saints. They are human beings who can put a ball in hoop, a puck in a net, can throw a baseball a hundred miles an hour and can throw touchdowns. Nothing more, nothing less.

If it's so easy, why aren't you doing it?

The plate and six screws in my left leg keeping my patella and tibia aligned doesn't think it's a smart idea for me to do be doing that anymore. I did play basketball in grammar school and high school, however. Also, I'm female, and last I checked, the NBA doesn't have any female players. If I hadn't had the accident summer before my senior year, I might have played in college for UIC, but I decided that my education was more important than excelling at a sport.

If you subscribe to the belief there are different types of intelligence, playing basketball at a high level requires a lot of kinesthetic intelligence. You have an elitist attitude and you sound really angry, and quite possibly fat.

Devoting yourself to something and striving to be the best is something to look up to. Most basketball players do not just decide "eh I'll just play basketball for a living". They devote their entire lives to it, that takes determination and hard work. They also have a very high level of athletic intelligence. Something I'd say you nor I (or likely any Farker) have.

There is a lot of controversy in every single sport. Every single one. If you want to single out the NBA as being a game of thugs then you're a farking hypocrite and need to learn to shut your mouth when something you don't like comes up.

Also, the new deal hoses players. Sure, the richest players NOW don't really need to fight for a better deal, but you have to remember they're fighting for future players as well.

Gosling: A FRIENDLY REMINDER

Soccer has no work stoppages. They also have no offseason.

This is what I don't get.

European workers seem to go on strike at the drop of a hat, compared to their American counterparts. I seem to read several times per year about general strikes in European countries that shut down all trains and transit, hospitals operating on skeleton staff, etc.

So on a continent so prone to work stoppages in every other line of work, how come European soccer doesn't have work stoppages?

People in wheelchairs can't be auto mechanics? An engine is too hard to figure out for anyone but an elite few? People in wheelchairs are too dumb to be doctors?

"All they're doing is going up and down the court and putting a ball in a hole, I can do that."

Did I say that, asshole? No I did not. I said that if people in wheelchairs can play basketball, it can't be that difficult or elite. I never said people in wheelchairs can't be auto mechanics or doctors. Methinks you didn't bother actually reading the entirety of the post, if that's what you incorrectly took from it.

By the by, that picture in no way represents me. One, I'm not male, two I don't drink, three I'm not fat. I do like pizza, though. So you're 1/3.

I can sew my own suture and put a band-aid on a wound. Does that mean anyone would EVER come to me to do so? Nope, not in a million years.

Just like I would never pay more than a few bucks to ever watch some people in a wheel chair play a game. They just can't perform at an NBA level.

Your analogy is terrible, but keep reaching until you fall over.

2011-11-14 07:31:38 PM
Have you ever been in a room and someone says something and *EVERYONE* else laughs or 'gets it'; but you don't. Like, not at all?

That's how I feel about sports.

It's strange too, because I started playing football when I was 6. I've done basketball too, lots of soccer, cross country wrestling and gymnastics in high school. I even did gymnastics (club, not NCAA) in college. But I never felt the desire to watch grown men I don't know, play these same sports on TV while I sit at home.

Still, I can accept that it would be entertaining.

But I don't get the sense of loyalty and belonging it brings to people. At least in Europe when you've got sports like Soccer or Rugby being played 'your' team is the team from your country. That I can sorta understand. But in the US with the NBA/NFL and others - what is the basis of team loyalty? I grew up in the same state as team X who is coached by a guy who grew up somewhere else and is owned by a guy who lives in CA and the players come from all over the place....but man, I sure do hate anyone who likes team Y!

And the rules for team loyalty? What the hell is that about? 'I like awesome teams and X is awesome this year' is, apparently, the most retarded opinion to have. It's only marginally better than admitting you molest children. Now, if I buy a stock when I think it's going to perform well and sell when it isn't, that's okay. But not with what team I cheer for? Unless I bet money, then the rules are different?

And then, even more baffling to me is when sports fans fight with other sports fans over which sport is 'tougher'. First, it doesn't matter because neither of you are actually participating. Secondly, none of these sports have the goal of being 'toughest'. So why the dick measuring contests over this crap? 'MY sport is tougher because they don't wear pads - your SISSY SPORT is SISSY because they do wear pads!'

Along those same lines, at least in my small limited circle of friends, the people I know who are most into sports are the same guys that rarely participated in sports. When I was younger, I thought adult sport-fans would be like 'old high school state-champs' and stuff, who could relive their glory days each weekend - but it seems like the opposite tends to be the rule. The die-hard football fans I know never played organized football and the die-hard basketball fans I know never played in anything beyond the park-district pre-high school team and outside at recess.

Now, I don't think you need to have played a sport to enjoy it. But it really makes question the real motivation behind all of these cryptic (to me) rules and the desire to establish a pecking order of toughness amongst the sports. Almost as if being a sports fan similar to a guy owning a hummer? I feel like, in this day and age, being 'tough' doesn't have a lot of value (I'm certainly not tough) but I'd understand two guys fighting over which one of them is tougher than the other....but fighting over which sport they don't play but watch on TV is awfully retarded.

Adolf Oliver Nipples: You want the truth about why NBA players are referred to as thugs? No, it's not racism.

1) Generationally, this acceptance is far closer than you think. Tattoos are widely being accepted as body art and not rebellion. Bball players aren't covered in piercings (not since Rodman at least).

2) This has nothing to do with a thug image this list is supposed to support.

3) This is just a subset of #1. And the NFL has stricter image rules.

4) Latrell Sprewell and Vernon Maxwell are not the entire NBA

5) Latrell Sprewell (and PJ Carlisimo) are not the entire NBA.

6) This has nothing to do with the thug image this list is supposed to support.

7) The tourney doesn't end very quickly but it is scheduled for only 2 long weekends and 2 shorter ones. Otherwise this point has less to do with the thug image and more to do with game mechanics and league rules like college students with class schedules and differences in shot clock duration to spur more scoring in the pros.

8) This goes to the fixed game image which boils down to some kind of racism if people assume Mafia type fixing when the word 'fixing' comes up. In general it is just corruption, plain and simple, and has nothing to do with thug images.

And the NBA isn't courting American viewers. They are courting international viewers far harder. They want to be a global product, not a regional one. They want to compete with Soccer for viewership and popularity, not the NFL.

The image you think it has isn't the image that 'most Americans' have.

glmorrs1: Smack_Adams: Not to piss on a parade of parade pissers, but the players aren't demanding more, more more.
This is a lockout, not a strike. The union isn't fighting to get a bigger piece of the pie. It's fighting to limit the reduction in current and future salary, as well as restrictions in player movement.

If the players had accepted any of the league's CBA proposals, existing contracts would not be paid out in full. Liikewise, the union's own proposals constitute major give-backs to ownership.

But if you want to biatch about thugs needing 17 cars and going on strike because Kobe's $170,000,000 contract isn't enough, then go right ahead. Assclowns.

farking this.

Also, I don't think some of you know what the word 'thug' means. If you think NBA players are all thugs then NEVER come to Memphis, the averge person on the street is likely to be 10 times more hood and thuggish than even Ron Artest. We'd eat you alive.

bahamasorbust: It always amazes me how many people just side with the owners. Yes in a perfect world the players are overpaid but they have a unique skill that brings in billions of dollars. The owners are the one's who locked out the players by crying poverty when their teams continue to appreciate at millions each year even though the owner's accounting makes it look like they are losing millions. The players have agreed to a pay cut, just not as big as the owner's would like. David Stern and the owners are the ones that should be hated.

Do hockey fans have nothing better to do than say how much they don't care about the NBA? Must be really boring.

I think the players should have taken the deal. Yes, they've already given up over a billion dollars in salary. Yes, the deal is extremely limiting to their free agency options. Yes, the owners have conceded nothing to sweeten the deal compared to the last CBA. Ultimately, they're still getting paid a ridiculous amount of money to play a game. Regular people aren't going to feel sorry for them even if they are getting shafted by the league. They need to understand that the owners are always going to win. Always.

I like the NHL more than the NBA so I'm squarely in the "don't care" camp in regards to the prospects of this season being lost from a fan standpoint, but I have interest in the lockout itself considering the economic and legal ramifications that honestly transcend simply "sports" at play here.

So there's that, I guess....

mitchcumstein1: 5) Football players do not physically attack coaches.

Let's just leave the subject of football coaches and attacking alone for a bit, shall we?

I remember Chad Johnson punching Marvin Lewis a few years ago.

mitchcumstein1: 4) Football players do not go into the stands to attack fans.

No, they just do it in the street, or strip joints, or have assassins do it.

Actually, this has happened a couple of times in the AFL and in the NCAA. No other sport allows for fans to be within inches of the game with no boards in place, either. So it's a stupid comparison on his part. Sorry to be quoting you on it.

mitchcumstein1: 3) Basketball players pissed and moaned about the dress code. Rather than looking professional, something that the vast majority of them had no trouble doing, there were a few that were determined to don the "hip-hop" look, again something not embraced by most Americans.

The NFL and MLB haven't even tried, I wonder why that is.

The dress code itself exists because Stern is obsessed with pleasing the racists who would not sponsor the league if they weren't all nicely dressed.

mitchcumstein1: 7) College basketball is seen as more fundamentally sound, plays fewer games, has coaches firmly in control, and ends with an exciting tournament that ends relatively quickly.

100% true, and there are currently 300+ D1 basketball schools, almost everybody can identify themselves to one of them. College basketball is the greatest sport there is.

Hmmmm...you mean people like it more when all the dark-skinned players on the floor are more subservient to a (typically) white coach? Nope, not subliminally racist at all! Also, a one-and-done tournament, while exciting and great for gambling, is a terrible way to determine a champion.

mitchcumstein1: 8) The Tim Donaghy scandal reinforced the idea that basketball is fixed.

I think most of those guys are so ultra competitive, and paid so well, they don't have any need to throw a game.

As a former Suns fan I can agree to this part - the refs are largely petty and biased, if not outright cheats. And they do have the power to influence the results of the game.

Boxxyfan: Do hockey fans have nothing better to do than say how much they don't care about the NBA? Must be really boring.

The Utah/fapping analogy makes me think that the majority of farkers actually have a sacred ritual--usually when their NHL team is off or in an intermission--where they close the shades and turn off the lights so the only glow in the room is the TV screen set on mute. Then they turn on an NBA game and sit reeeeal closely and reeeeal quietly. Of course, as soon as Derrick Rose throws down a one-handed buggywhip they let out an instinctive, guttural "OOOOOH!" before they realize what they've done and pipe down lest the neighbors hear.

Then they rush to Fark to post a reaffirmation that they never watch the NBA and don't care at all about the lazy, overpaid thugs. As if that's supposed to undo their private, special moment.

FARK: Where denial happens.

Boxxyfan: I think the players should have taken the deal. Yes, they've already given up over a billion dollars in salary. Yes, the deal is extremely limiting to their free agency options. Yeah, the NFL players realized that early and saved the season. I expect a rift between the rank-and-file and the stars by now, though. Those players making the league minimum are going to be in some pain this winter. They needed to use strength in numbers to make their leadership cave.

Glancing through this thread, here's what I see:

- People who will never perform a skill at a level worth millions of dollars claiming that people whose market value is millions of dollars are overpaid.

- Discussion of a topic with perhaps the most startling divide between those who know what they're talking about and those who don't on this entire discussion board.

- People that still actually believe the narrative that college basketball players are more fundamentally-sound than a professional league composed primarily of the best college basketball players. Apparently, people watch a sport and lie to themselves in order to make the level play seem higher than it really is.

- The usual course of racism, of course.

What am I missing here?

NBA Owners:

i44.tinypic.com

/what's that?
//you know players' financials but you won't let them see yours?
///the talent should fund its own league and stick it the f*ck to the owners
//not that the owners wouldn't pull a koch brothers on that sort of thing
/go fark yourselves, ownership that sits around and collects fees like the only toll bridge on a wide river

The short players want more money.

Cheesus: jj325: The NBA has sucked for years. A bunch of overpaid egomaniacs who only put forth the effort in the playoffs. Hopefully we will see more NCAA basketball this season

To be fair that's probably because most of the league makes the playoffs and the regular season has no point.

There's been some discussion of the league shedding a few teams. How or if that happens has been one of a few contentious side-issue in the negotiations. My solution? Every team that doesn't make the playoffs next time there's a season, folds.

KnowEyeInnTeem: Such a black day for the sport. A dark, black day. Why is the NBA full of such big dicks?

lol this is not unintentional. it can't be.

There's two upsides to all of this for me.

One, if, by some weird twist they still play, it helps out a good but very old team...like the Celts.

Two, CSN New England has been playing a shiat-ton of classic Celtics games to fill up their schedule, which is, let's face it, the Celtics, Celtics-related stuff, and a whole bunch of "not watching." Like right now, it's the MJ playoff game.

I hope they come back, but i don't know when it's gonna happen.

acella: skylabdown: Are you an NBA fan who wants to help the game of basketball?

Umm... I love Baseball and I'm an O's fan. So you know what I do? I go to minor league games instead of major league games. I also bought a bunch of wiffleball shiat and gave it away to kids. You know why? Because I love BASEBALL... no necessarily the people who play it at the major league level. If you are a fan of basketball as a sport, you would understand. Instead, it sounds like you are just a starfarker with a short attention span.
