The_Sponge: Mr. Pokeylope: Please don't tell me that we're getting another NBA team here. I was so proud when we let the Sonics go.

Basketball sucks.

Proud? They're the only professional Seattle team that won a championship. (The Storm don't count.)

And if Seattle somehow had another NBA team in the future, that isn't good enough.

I will only accept the following:

The Sonics come back to Seattle.

David Stern, Clay Bennett, and Howard Shultz apologize and agree to go swimming in Puget Sound while wearing "cement shoes".

Yes, proud. Basketball is a crappy, boring sport.

If we get another basketball team, they are going to make us pay for another arena that we don't want (vote down).

One down, three to go...

I'll have you know I was UNDEFEATED in fencing my senior year in high school and why is this on the MAIN PAGE it belongs on the sports tab and only the sports tab

I live in Phoenix. We have one professional basketball player and he is getting old. It's too bad he never had a team to play with.

I often wonder what he would have done in soccer. They always say how good a soccer player Steve Nash was but would he have played in Europe?

It's even worse. Since the average basketball pro lasts 5 seasons, they'll NEVER make it up.

You can't cite a lack of defense when defensive numbers are on the rise. At the end of the day, athletes are entertainers. NBA players have become far less entertaining.

Dallas winning this year is everything you could have theoretically wanted. You just don't want to like it on principle.

SnakeLee: R.A.Danny: Why? Is hating basketball racist? Why would that be? Why would you even say that? Are you a racist? You must be if you think hating basketball is disparaging to African Americans.

Basically every post I see about not liking basketball has one of two things going on:

1.) the person writing it assumes they are smarter than the average basketball player and tries to work that into the post

2.) they comments on the dress of the players, use the word thug, or something to that effect.

I never see posts that say something like "I don't like basketball because they score too often, I like the suspense of hockey and baseball because getting a point means something" or "I like the more nuanced strategy of a game like football where you have to deal with twice as many players."

So that's why. If this thread was all people saying things that didn't have racist undertones and giving actual reasons for not liking basketball, I would totally agree with you. But that's not the case.

Watch out, you'll get banned for stuff like this.

You know who really gets hurt by the lockout are all the kids who will forgo college and enter the NBA directly from high school. Not being able to land an eight figure contract where they will subsequently sit on the bench for four years will really be a detriment to their morale, and the livelihood of their several teenage common law wives whom they have fathered several children with. Please think of the chillin'.

Not much of a sports fan, but I like hockey and understand why people like football (even if I don't myself). Baseball is just meh.

A big part of soccer seems to be taking dives, which seems like cheating to me. Fark soccer. The refs and coaches even take dives in that joke of a sport.

That about sums up my feelings on sports.

1.) I don't think anybody knows what to do about the draft/free agency if the total season is a loss. It doesn't seem fair if every team is given an equal chance at the #1 see. Could you imagine Miami getting it? The conspiracy theories would NEVER end. Like, end-of-time never end.

If there's no season, they should just have a draft order based on 2010-2011 season records. But really, nobody knows.

I know we're past that age but we really need to contract some biatches. This season is being held up in no small part by owners of terrible teams who would benefit from not playing basketball. Lose the teams that are hemorrhaging money or give them to people who know how to make money and let's move on.

I was being slightly trollish. They are obviously not pussies, although football is a tougher sport.

Hockey is boring as fark. It is fun to go to a game because hockey seems to attract a lot of hot women, at least in my part of the country, but as a televised game, it is HORRIBLE. If hockey were to disappear from the Earth tomorrow there'd be a shiatload of suicidal Canadians and that's about it. Who cares?

That being said, baseball, America's farking pastime, is a snorefest.

I would rather watch football than any other sport, and basketball after that. At least with basketball you don't have to put on $500 dollars worth of shiat just to play it. Get a ball go find a hoop, play.

2011-11-14 06:20:18 PM
From what little I've read, this is one of those cases where almost everyone involved is a douchebag of the highest order. If I actually watched basketball, I'd cheer for the fans and start throwing my own feces at the players and the owners.

Apparently they've missed a couple weeks already, and I can't say I've noticed.

PrinceofFark: They make millions upon millions of dollars for every 1.5 hours of film produced for you to be entertained by. They also have shown a disdain for the common folk who subsidizes their unreal life style. No one seems to get upset when Brad Pitt is offered 20 million to pretend to be a baseball coach?

I was upset.

Nobody should make that much money in comparison to the rest of society. Its not healthy for for the economy, and its not healthy for society to have that much cash tied up in a singular individual. 10 people with 100 grand each is far more beneficial to an economy than one with a million. And people will end up resenting a guy who 100X what everyone else in town does.

Im not suggesting everyone should make the same amount of money - that is retarded - but so is such massive income disparity.

2011-11-14 06:21:23 PM
The owners who are losing money are losing money on purpose. The money lost on their teams can be written off from their tax liability and they reap other benefits as it pertains to purchasing land (eminent domain) or leveraging the brand for other insanely profitable business deals.

But Stern's success does not change how strange the NBA position is. There is first of all the hilarious assumption that owning a basketball franchise is a business - at least as that word is used outside of, say, the president's mansion in Pyongyang. But beyond that is a second, equally ridiculous assumption, which is that the economics of basketball teams are principally about basketball. As it turns out, they are not. (new window)

I'm beginning to think the Rugby fans are correct. Rugby should be the next sport. However, you will have to play indoors, like arena Rugby.

Soccer has too few goals and way too many fake penalties.

Baseball? Not for me thanks. A mix of beanball, slap fights, steroids and hours of boredom stretched over months.

Hockey? Institutionalized fighting. No thanks.

Tennis? Women screaming like they're getting banged.

Yep. Arena Rugby. YMMV.

Cuban shut down the NBA. Congrats Mavs. You give this town a title in a long championship drought and you do this? Stern hates Cuban, this is proof. He's taking it out on the rest of the league.
