Why would these idiot hayseeds build their structures so close to railroad tracks? I love when some terrible disaster befalls them and then they just scratch their heads and wonder how in the world it happened. Oh, my barn burned down, well I guess I'll rebuild it right next to where the spark shooting train goes by. This planet... Jesus...

Sandusky register?

Too soon!

Good that no one was hurt or that a lot of homes were lost, but I bet the man that lost his garage is one pissed off SOB right now.

You would think there would be some mention of the police trying to track down the particular train and get it stopped before it DID start a fire that claimed a bunch of homes.. or lives.. but, hey... donuts!!!!!!

Theoretically, the RR's right-of-way should be large enough to contain sparks from passing trains.

I love it when the railway greases the outside rail on curves(accidentally of course) and sparks start a fire and burn out the old creosote ties that support the rails. And then the next train goes crash..

/Cue news items of car stuck under the train for miles and miles.

There's no indication that the building caught fire directly from the passing train. My intuition tells me that the field that the building was in caught fire and then it spread to the building. What do you do then? Build a concrete pad all the way around the barn?

their wealthy relatives build factories on riverbanks that emit dangerous wastes, then shrug sheepishly when someone discovers you can use the stream water to fuel your model rocket. 'whoops! is that OUR waste pipe?'

Bingo. There has to be a buffer zone of non flammable material along the right of way. They even have special trucks to spray for weeds:

farm6.static.flickr.com

They can also use one of these for the big jobs:

www.northamericanrails.com

Note the very wide cleared area surrounding the tracks in the above photo. BN's MOW guys are on the case.

And this is not a new technology:

www.railroad-line.com

Some places they are less careful:

www.hmdb.org

So, railroad maintenance of way crew FAIL.

It's because of commercials like that I make sure I have the remote close by at all times. What is it with honda raping 80's metal songs for their commercials? Last year they were using Judas Priest to try and make their minivans seem not lame.
