(ESPN) Obvious Rex Ryan concedes that what he's got here are this year's version of the Same Old Jets. He made another good point, but it was called back on a holding penalty   (espn.go.com) divider line 25

"What am I going to say?" Rex asked. "Maybe I should guarantee the fact that we're out of it. Last time I did that [in 2009], we made the playoffs. So yeah, we've got no chance."

This is why I find it impossible to hate Rex Ryan.

Maybe his wife needs to put her foot down on the players and tell them to step it up?

Just to put this game in perspective.

I was up at 11 pm Saturday night to start work at midnight Sunday. Worked until 10:30am. Got home at 11, helped feed, water and wash the little one. Fed and washed myself. Stole a nap from noon until almost 1. In-laws started arriving. Made myself a pot of coffee.

Cooked a huge dinner. Ate it right before the Giants loss. In-laws stayed until about 8pm. Had another cup of coffee.

I stayed up for this entire game. It was a big one. Had huge implications on the division for the rest of the season. I finally crashed about 12:30.

Best game of the season SO FAR!

I'm not entirely certain ALL of the blame should go to Sanchez for "the stupidest thing in football history". I can't fathom the OC in that situation not just saying "um....crap, I'm not sure what to call here, but let's just wind the clock down and call a timeout".

I guess I'm not sure I understand this story or what perspective these details are supposed to provide.

The problem wasn't the timeout, it's that Sanchez DIDN'T wait until the play clock was at :01 to call the timeout. There were about 15-20 seconds left.

Yes, but as a Dolphins fan I get a perverse pleasure from seeing the Pats beat up on the Jets. It's like having older brothers that beat up on us constantly. One is a good, clean-cut kid who still takes time out of his busy schedule to beat the crap out of us, but the other is a crappy big-mouthed punk. While we gain or lose nothing from the outcome since we are so far out of playoff contention that we might as well not show up for the rest of the season, it's still fun to watch the good brother beat up the bad one. Y'know, before he comes back to beat on us again.

End of the first half. They ran the previous play with 1:49 on the clock, and ended with about 1:45 or so. After that play, Sanchez called timeout with 1:24 left, when he could have bled the clock down to 1:05 or thereabouts.

And Tom Brady needed 1:15 for his TD drive, I believe.

TD was scored with :09 left. Play started at :17.

As a Patriots fan I'm loathe to defend Sanchez at all, but it's not unreasonable to assume Parkinson's Law may have been in effect during that Brady's last drive that half.

Perhaps, but it was still stupid not to leave Brady as little time as possible. You can't defend Sanchez for not realizing the situation, it's his JOB to realize the situation.

Now, you're obviously right about the possibility that the Patriots would have scored anyway, but leaving Brady 1:05 is preferable to leaving him 1:24. That's just facts.
