(Topless Robot) Strange Bruce Campbell makes a reasonable argument for an Ash-less "Evil Dead" remake. You see, this is why Bruce Campbell is truly the greatest actor of our generation   (toplessrobot.com) divider line 45

If he doesn't even make a cameo appearance, that movie is dead to me.

I'd like to find out what happened to Ash in the future, after the nuclear holocaust.

I could deal with an old Ash, scraping out an existence among the debris, living off pilfered S-Mart stock. The movie could end with him finding a way back to present times and not recognizing a damn thing because so much time has passed since the original cabin trip... maybe getting thrown into a prison for the criminally insane after being found with a chainsaw hand, a shotgun, and blood all over himself.

I was coming here to make the point he made before I even RTFA. Unless Bruce plays Ash, having Ash will just suckify any remake even more than it probably already will.

Yep, you can't do these iconic characters with different actors when the fans remember them from when they came out. His point is spot-on. Look how many people hated the "reboot" of "Nightmare on Elm Street" by and large because Robert Englund wasn't Freddy, so he was wrong.

That said, I don't see why they need to remake "Evil Dead." Why can't they make another movie in the same universe? Post-"Army of Darkness" would be interesting to see. I think it would appeal to the target audience far more than simply re-doing the movie that we already know and love and have seen a ton of times.

More importantly Bruce Campbell talked about how Evil Dead nerds -- like myself -- are upset there's no Ash character, he rightly points out that if the movie did have an Ash, the actor would be instantly, unfairly and almost certainly disaparagingly to Bruce Campbell's performance as Ash, and that's not fair to any actor, and probably not fair to the entire remake.

He accidentally the run-on sentence.

Campbell seems to be less fancentric and kind of angry these last few years, especially since Burn Notice has been a hit. Has he finally grown fat and comfortable?

So the tree gets Ellen Page pregnant and she spends the next ninety minutes of soulful introspection on what to do with the devil's offspring?

It's half in the can already.

I was just discussing this with some friends in my head the other day. I'd love to see an Evil Dead that doesn't center around Ash.

The group (including Ash, played by a young person) is about to go to the cabin, but at the last moment Ash is prevented from going. Either he's grounded, or he has to work extra shifts at S-Mart, the point is, he's out of the picture.

The movie continues without him and the entire cast is killed, the deadites win, the cabin waits for its next victim. The we have coda after the credits and find out the person that prevented Ash from going (either Ash's dad that grounded him or the boss that made him work) is non other that Bruce.

(young) Ash is still angry that he wasn't able to go and Bruce just says, "Listen kid, you may not realize it I'm doing you a favor, I'm saving your hand and your life and your career. You don't want to know what 30 years of conventions does to a man's soul."

I dunno, I just really like the idea of (old)Ash / Bruce being this Deadpool-esque 4th wall bender. It's like after everything he's seen his coping mechanism for all the Lovecraftian horrors is to completely see through the fabric of his reality.

serpent_sky: That said, I don't see why they need to remake "Evil Dead." Why can't they make another movie in the same universe?

I think the reason for that is because it would then be a sequel, and they probably think they can get more mileage out of a reboot than by making the 4th installment of an existing franchise. I agree with you, that cabin is still out there in the woods, the Necronomicon still exists (or at least could be McGuffin'd into the film as needed).

IMHO, the requirements for an Evil Dead movie should be, Nearly comic gore, Scary with an extremely reluctant but eventually proficient protagonist.

I've noticed quite the opposite. I follow him on the twitters and he really seems to enjoy engaging with his fans through that medium. (And he tweets A LOT.) He sometimes sasses people a bit, but he wouldn't be Bruce Campbell if he didn't.

I'm less concerned about the lack of Ash and more concerned that Diablo Cody is writing it. Evil Dead is one of those movies that I absolutely love so I'm disappointed it's getting remade. I grew up about half hour from the cabin where it was filmed and I've got lots of awesome teenage memories of camping in the woods beside the place. Never get raped by a tree though. For those interested, the roof of the cabin caved in years ago. All that's left is basically a foundation. I moved away and haven't been out there in a decade or so, maybe it's changed since then.

Of course back in the day (90s) he used to answer email with pithy, one sentence responses so I guess it could.

Buddy of mine and I had an idea for a movie where Bruce was a monster hunter, and his sons were played by Nick Brendon and Nathan Fillion. Nathan was the favored son who took up dad's reins, Nick had no clue as to the supernatural.

Ok. Fine. Make a remake with someone other than Ash. Not a problem.

Then, after the credits, this young and newly tortured hero (perhaps with a buzz saw fist instead of a chainsaw arm) comes home to find his dad sitting in the living room with a shotgun on the mantle. Ash looks up at his mutilated son, holds up his chainsaw arm and says something along the lines of, "I told you not to go to that damned cabin."

he doesn't really become the icon til Evil Dead 2 so I dunno why u people are biatching. Ash does nothing bad ass in Evil Dead 1 that I recall.

2011-11-15 07:04:11 AM
Can I honestly just say that I am sick and farking tired of everything being a damned remake? WE DON'T NEED TO REMAKE EVERY FRANCHISE FROM THE 1980's PEOPLE. When "The Thing" and "That Damn Dancing Movie" were out at the same time it was uber obvious.

All art is theft. The originality in ideas largely comes from combining previous elements of disparate works with some constituent of a new idea or spin in order to make a new work. But this crap is just pure shiate. I mean I accept remakes will be made, but why do we literally have to do it to every movie ever made within the past 30 years?

Judge Dredd? I mean come on!
