Since I already nearly run vendors out of cash with my loot runs from dungeons...I don't think I'm going to bother carrying around six hundred pounds of book.

I'm barely 10 hours in, JUST arrived at the first "city" (not that saw mill town) and I already have, like, 5 grand. Money is not that hard to come by. Go pick some flowers, brew some potions, profit.

Where X is how much gold you want to have.

Apparently Bethesda carried over the cheat codes from Morrowind and Oblivion into the new system.

I actually wish they had changed them because now I have to battle the denizens of Skyrim and my inner cheat demon.

25 hours in, loved every second of it so far.

Fark the giants though! I've killed over a dozen dragons and have yet to get a giant below 3/4 health.

One time I was fighting a giant, and a dragon landed and attacked it. The giant killed it in 8 hits, only lost like 1/4 of it's health... I still got the dragon soul though.

Okay, new to the Scrolls series but I bought this yesterday because of the recommendations from you farkers. So here's my question: how important is it that I physically read every book I encounter?

Should I just open the book then drop it after I've gained any skills from it?

I'm about 12 hours in, I like it so far. Better graphics but at the moment I like Oblivion better, it seemed to have a lot more story to it.

Also I'm deep in the mountain looking for the golden claw and haven't used any magicka yet....at all.... in the entire game. Should I have done that by now?

It all depends. I usually pick up any books worth more than 50 gold, those usually indicate a book that will be useful to you as either skill increasers or possible quest items. I've actually only read 2 of them (most of them are only like 4 pages), because there was some quest relevant info in it, but besides that you're best bet is just picking up, seeing if you get a skill increase, and setting it back down.

I'm a hoarder so I have to pick up any new books to put on my bookshelves (I like how you can physically store books on the shelves).

I had the same question. Also, is it possible to take books from tables after reading them? New to a non-WoW RPG and am a bit dumb.

/really dumb apparently

You can play the whole game without using a single magic spell. You might miss out on side stuff every now and then (some doors only open with magic spells), but you won't be stopped from any of the main missions at all.

You only have to use magic if you want to. I'm all about the archery and one-handed weapons. I almost never cast a spell. At level 21, I still haven't put any points into magic.

Some of the books can hold hints about quests or crafting. I don't think it's worth the time, though.

Awesome game.

Yes, whatever button you use to read (not sure if you're on console or PC) is the same one to take it. You can usually just double press the button and it'll skip the reading animation and put it straight in your inventory.

Thanks dudes. I'm starting to hit that weight limit and books seemed like the obvious thing to drop in a pinch. And the magicka was never tutorialized so I didn't know if I just hadn't hit that phase yet.

Prefer the one-handers and archery myself, being a wood elf and all.

2011-11-14 11:49:59 AM
I had to take the game out and give it to my girlfriend and tell her not to let me have it until Friday because it is getting in the way of the mountain of work I have to get done this week. I really should have done things over the weekend, but instead I chopped wood and made daggers.

Ive played it a good bit, but my roommate is insane. He got it on release, made a character who he got up to level 15, then decided to start over as a mage. He has already gotten that character up over my level, which is like 13. I dont think he has had anything to eat since Thursday.

Also, there is an exploit if you want the key to the house in Whiterun. You need to have the 5000 gold, and go to buy the house while the guy is in bed. You initiate the purchase and quickly exit the conversation and store all your gold in the wardrobe right next to his bed. You get the key and the achievement and get to keep your gold. Unfortunately it claims that your bed is still owned so you cant get the well rested bonus from sleeping in it. But it does give you a safe place to store your loot.

2011-11-14 11:50:25 AM
Ohh and another tip for starters: Buy a house ASAP. WhiteRun as the cheapest house (5000 gold) and it'll help you immensely regarding storage. Killing 2 dragons will net you around 150 pounds of loot (approx 90-120 in bones, and 60-80 in scales), leaving you very little room to take other stuff if you're in the middle of a mission.

If there is a bridge near the giant's camp you can attack one, run off and then get in the smaller part of the bridge where they can't reach. Then hit them with magic or arrows. Step 3 - Profit.

one good dungeon crawl will have you pretty set if you search your corpses, cadavers, victims, chests, urns, etc, etc and sell off the shiat you upgraded from.

dun have the patience to do this for a 50gold book.

I prefered the rich black guy in Oblivion. Sneak into his house, murder him (fulfilling Brotherhood requirement), and just start looting his pockets. Your only limit on the gold was how long you wanted to push your button/key.

That depends on you. I try to read them all to get more of the backstory and history of the world. I think I've spent at least an hour or two reading, I'm over 100 books read ATM.

Sell anything you don't need/doesn't have something you could use. I sell all the jewelry if it doesn't have some enchantment on it (you'll find a lot of jeweled amulets with no enchantments, but worth 500+ gold). You can also sell some of the dragon bones/scales you find, considering you'll have a ton of them (you get 2-4 of each with a dragon kill and there's dragons everywhere). Bones are worth 500, and scales are 250. They're used to make extremely advanced armor, so unless you plan on mastering Smithing (100 skill), you probably won't be using them much.

Missions are the next one, and the further you get along in a guild/group the higher the rewards will be for completing them. Thieves Guild in Riften will get you quite a lot.

I'm sad that I cant play Skyrim yet. Too much to do with school and work, so I'll have to wait till holiday break. Still I've played morrowind, obilivion, fallout 3, and newvegas.

Through all the games I've discovered a pretty good strategy for looting - especially if you're a hoarder. Figure out values based on weight (how many gold or credits per unit of weight). Requires you to do a little math, but also lets you loot more without having to frequently return to town to sell stuff.

Oh man I cannot wait for this semester to be finished.

Does skyrim have a hardcore mode like newvegas did? I loved how hardcore mode totally changes the way you play the game and the skills you need to survive.

safari joe does it again: I had the same question. Also, is it possible to take books from tables after reading them? New to a non-WoW RPG and am a bit dumb.

I figure if the book is worth ~45+ gold, it's likely a skill book, and if it's worth 0 or 1, it's likely a book that you should read. Oftentimes the name gives it away. Most lore books are worth in the 8-20 gold range.

To pick up a book, you hit the 'use' button while reading it, IIRC. Be careful though, taking a book can count as stealing even if you can read it without stealing. Just doublecheck when it's a public book.

Those aren't cheat codes; it's a developer's console, and it's part of what makes the series awesome: the games are infinitely modifiable.

But I will not cheat! As soon as I started cheating in Morrowind and Oblivion, I just made myself an unstoppable badass and killed the whole country.

I used this book-gold exploit to get some gold to feed my Smithing hobby...

Turns out you can mine for ore (just found this out at the end of the night last night) instead of buying it constantly from NPC smiths. Does anyone know how to turn that ore into Ingots?

2011-11-14 12:17:11 PM
I played Morrowind for days on end(total). I played Oblivion for a few hours. Felt more like eye candy than real entertainment. I also dislike the changes that were made, and the absense of a cheat code for regen health, because I just HAD to kill a town guard for his armor on Morrowind.

Which is Skyrim most like?

I may pick it up when it hits a sale or put it on the Christmas list to help with the cold months of winter. Besides, I still have New Game-itis from Mw3, crappy as it is, I like it.

As to the article, any single player game that will patch things like this are douchy, imo. "Play our open ended game, but only how we say to!!!"

2011-11-14 12:17:35 PM
Is there, or is there not a patch for the PC already?

Also, why the hell are the dragons so wimpy compared to the giants? Makes no sense.

Hahaha I was sitting there with my girlfriend at the naming screen trying to think of a name, but I didn't wanna sound nerdy or dorky in front of her so I asked for her suggestion (like picking a team name in school, you don't wanna look like a fool). She said "Well you have to have a badass name from past history/mythology, how about the leader of the Spartans? Leonidas right?" I said "Fark yea, knew I held onto you for a reason!"

Now I'm torn because I got her so into the game she wants to start her own with a female elf, but I keep wanting to play mine! Luckily she isn't done with ME2, so I'm having her finish that first.

There are smelters scattered around (though they seem to be rarer than forges). The simplest one to find is at the Whiterun blacksmith. It's the big beehive shaped thing at the back of the crafting area.

Protip: corundum ore is best used to make steel, corundum ingots are only used for top level enhancements.

Time Traveling Bunnies: Also the Whiterun guards killed me a few times after I trespassed and stole a horse.

Hah. I accidentally stole something or other (misclicked) and the guards immediately showed up. I had just entered the store so I just reloaded from the save point.

Anyone else buy a horse? I did early on, and I think it was a mistake. It's annoying when you fast-travel to an area where the horse can't go and it just gets left where ever you started from. And you should be able to fight from horse-back. And finding your horse when it runs off during a tough fight is obnoxious. A fire spriggan killed mine, and I didn't bother buying another. :(

I'm enjoying the hell out of this game. I could see easily ignoring main quests for days and days. I kind of blew the whole weekend gaming it, which is why I have a L19 mage that I've basically 100% invested into destruction magic.

Smelters. Big black bee-hive looking structures about as tall as your character. There's one behind the forge in Whitehall.

Nice. Every other name I kept thinking of was straight outta Game of Thrones so I had to keep going back to the barrel. At least she can't get mad at you for spending time playing the game. If anything she'll get mad you're hogging the screen time.

Since we're asking questions:

What difference does it make which soul gem size you use when enchanting a weapon? With armor once you've chosen your soul gem, it shows you the final enchantment strength. Nothing like that happens with weapons. Does it affect the final number of charges in the weapon?
