'Scuse me. I just threw up a little. Making Thatcher into some sort of heroine is like making Bin Laden into a martyr.

That was pretty insufferable.

It's even worse than calling Obama "the One".

I can't wait to see the semi-biographical film where they try to portray George W. Bush as a genius and defeater of terrorism.

They'd probably title the film "Mission Accomplished."

You're so much more intelligent than the rest of us.

Love her or hate her, at least you knew where you stood with Thatcher - she was clear about her politics and policies and tried to follow through on them. The current crop, borne out of the bland Blair era of British politics, are, on both sides, an insipid bunch of vacillating yes-men. I am sure Thatcher is ashamed of them.

Problem being that an insipid bunch of vacillating yes-men are still better at leading a country than she was. Starting a war because some unarmed workers came over from Argentina to break up a ship (and had all the appropriate permits and permissions to do so). Selling off the utilities for a fraction of their value, something everyone in the UK has been paying for ever since (and which will only get worse as over time the regulators will always end up more and more in the pocket of the industry). Creating a new regressive tax so obviously a bad idea that it is even singled out in the US Constitution. Having a "boom" during which 3.5 million or more people were unemployed - which is still about a million higher than now, or any time after the recent crash, which is astonishing given all the extra population in the last 30 years and the supposed terrible state we are now in. Propping up the miners unions - if you don't believe this then look at the numbers employed in the industry in the UK before, during, and after her terms in office - basically she helped advertise and stall the closing of the mines by making it such a front page issue for so long.

Every major policy she had was a failure or a farce, even a simpering idiot like Cameron is a step up from her.

Iron Lady? Is this another one of them Marvel comic to movie adaptations that I need to see to build up the anticipation for the final release of The Avengers move next year?

That may have been the excuse for the Falklands war, but the rest of your post explains the *real* reasons.

Oh, and Meryl Streep?

I am SO into her.

Still, at least she *earns* her Oscars. It's better than Oprah being given an honorary Oscar.

Meryl Streep is the best actress of our time. She was phenomenal in Julie and Julia. She should have won the Oscar for her performance.

I await the judgement of Rik, Mike, Vivian and Neil.

THATCHER!

I just watched the trailer, subby, and not once did Ms. Streep literally plead for an Oscar. Her performance might be practically begging for one, though.

/pet peeve: literally should not be used for emphasis

Re the Falklands, you need to read this (new window), not quite as cut and dried as you suggest.
