This is worse than that time I went roller skating with Pol Pot!

"the 9/11 one squeaked past the Fox standards and practices department but is sure to raise as many eyebrows as it airs two months after the 10th anniversary of 9/11."

Why the hell would that make a difference?

Stop treating the event as a high holy holiday or something.

What's 9/11 again?

2011-11-14 09:52:23 AM
9/11 happens every year... usually in September, and right around the 11th.

Has there been a major tragic event that hasn't had this treatment in a time travel story?

This won't stop me from trying to prevent 9/11 when I can steal a time machine.

I wonder if a bunch of people had an idea like that, then their TARDIS's all tried to materialize in the same time and place and exploded..

I'm not bothered by the high-fiving-for-nine-eleven. I'm bothered that Family Guy just keeps going out of its way to be "edgy", and if some of their edginess happens to be funny, then that's cool, too.

Personally it bugs me more than anything else that the third time-line had Brian as the author of the Harry Potter books, even though they went back to 1999 and Rowling was on book 3 or 4 by that time.

One of their better episodes in the last 5 years.

Thus causing the fall of the towers? I didn't know an exploding TARDIS left traces of thermite.

As soon as I saw that I knew people were going to be pissed. Especially since creator Seth McFarlane missed one of the ill fated flights. And yes, they're trying too hard to be "edgy". You're no Matt and Trey, Seth.

I guess this is worse than all the time travel stories where they try to avert wwii and it makes the world worse.

I know, I can't imagine how much paper is wasted every year :(

Hope it's funnier than the previous week's episode. And is Cleveland back on again? Didn't seem to be available to DL last Monday. That's better than Family Guy and American Dad (though let's face it, so is breathing nothing but fart for a week).

2011-11-14 10:16:18 AM
People aren't pissy about 'high-fiving' about 9/11. They're pissy because of what it meant. Somehow showing Dubya as the leader of a new Confederacy and having him destroy America through war is what really pissed people off. Pawning it off on a few seconds of footage (that blatantly said 'this is going to be strange if people take it out of context').

The author is still pushing the same old sad mindset of using 9/11 as a reason to hate, just like the Republicans are still trying to do. It's been ten years. If we're going to still whine about it and take it out of context to make it into some fascist holiday, at least be honest about it.

Ha ha... Only if you've been naughty! JoePa comes down the chimney on the morning of 9/11 and gives paper airplanes for the good little boys and girls to throw at the tree, and throws the bad little boys and girls in his sack to get anal raped in a shower.

Nah, that's what the article is supposed to do. "Hey, did you see what happened on the Family Man? Pewie and Brain supported 9/11! And then the Meg wore a turban and flew into the heart of the sun!"

This is even worse than that time Family Guy made a bunch of jokes about Sarah Palin's daughter.

damn... and I missed... after giving up on yet another "jokes waaay to specific to a tiny fraction of it's audience" snooze fest of the Simpsons, I had to quickly change the channel as fark "Alan Gregory"...then got wrapped up in Boardwalk Empire and Walking Dead... guess I'll have to catch the AS rerun later in the week.

No one's going to mention what an awesome idea it was to merge the old art style with the current one? Well, it was.

"TV's not even plugged in."

Oh, and question: I don't have HDTV at the moment. Did the entire episode air in 4:3 to go with the "1999" feel? Or was it just chopped down by my local station?

2011-11-14 10:36:24 AM
I thought it was funny and didn't attach any significance to any of it. It's a cartoon. Did I miss the memo where Family Guy is supposed to be scathing social commentary?

Some people ought to get a life.

Hoboclown: The article doesn't say anything about people being angry about this.

That's why they call it manufactured outrage.

Somewhere in the Midwest the orders are coming down now and computer labs in church community centers will be abuzz with directives for the harpies to email about the "offensive" episode of the show they've never seen. The elderly members will be brought in to sign letters stating how they believe it to be in poor taste and how they will actively boycott any company that advertises during the show. A politician that has had the support of the church will get a call informing him that he needs to get on board and bring it up on the floor of whatever assembly they have. Someone will call the press, crews will be sent, video will be shot, and on a slow newsday in the next week it will get traction and end up on CNN with a follow-up by one of the talking heads making it their top story for callers to voice their opinions on phone, twitter and facebook.

*sighs*

Just farking change channel, there's this thing called freedom of speech, and there's also freedom in hearing what you want to hear, so if you don't like it, just change the channel to something else.

Just had an interesting idea: What if your main character went back in time and made a change that actually improved things. Would there be a moral imperative to restore the timeline to the original bad version?

Discuss.

I didn't catch that. I did like the way they poked fun at their asides. "This is worse than...." and they just stood around for a minute and continued. Clever episode, actually.

Are you suggesting that Marty go back and make sure his parents suck and his kids get arrested or that Doc Brown go back and terminate Mary Steenburgen?

I haven't seen the episode, so I can't say how offensive it might be. That said, given a choice of whether or not to make a joke that could deeply hurt someone else on a topic like 9/11, cancer, AIDS, the Holocaust, etc., I personally choose not to. To me, getting a chuckle isn't worth it.

But, who's to say what the "original" version is, if it's a given that time travel is possible? What evidence would there be that the present as it is heretofore known is not already altered? The time-traveler going back to Germany in the 30s might go to murder the time-traveler going back to murder Hitler for the sake of a consistency in a timeline that is possibly constantly inconsistent. But, even if that were the case, if the Holocaust never happened, who would go back to make sure something that never happened, happens?
