Unfortunately China is too big of a player to say ok we'll wait until we come up with some rules you want to be party to. But the good news is that China can only get so far stealing other people's ideas.

Could you imagine what people in the US would say if some other countries got together, made some 'international policies' and then told us we had to abide by them? We'd be like, 'LOLZ!!!! Ha Ha Ha! No.'

The Chinese spokesman said China would abide by any rules China was a part of creating and has agreed to. That's sounds awfully damn reasonable to me.

um, shouldn't we kind of get our own economic house in order before we start asking China of all countries to start "acting like a grown up?"

Are the "International rules" the ones from the WTO? Well...if they want to be in the WTO, they play by them rules, no one is forcing them to be in the WTO.

Having read the article, I figure I only need to spend three days studying the current nuances of trans-Asian trade relations to understand its implications, if any.

Somebody let me know if there's a part of this I can care about while taking far less than that amount of time.

His remarks were a clear rebuttal to U.S. President Barack Obama who earlier said that China must act like a "grown up" and play by the rules of the international community in economic affairs.

Am I the only one who finds it embarrassing that the leader of my country uses the term "grown up" in international trade talks?

A country that isn't quite sure exactly how powerful it's muscles are is trying to flex and see what happens? Say it ain't so!

So long as China doesn't overplay their hand too badly they'll get close to what they want. More posturing, per usual.

No, but he is the leader of a nation of giant children.

No, most people are kids who never grew up. They're the ones who pull a Cartman when they don't get their way.

Like when UNESCO allowed Palestine to join as a full member. I can't remember who it was, but someone decided they didn't want to play anymore. Dammit, I wish I could find a citation for that. I hope it wasn't someone important.

So when you join a club or organization do you alter all the bylaws you can change and ignore the rest since you didn't have a hand in creating them?

We all would love to have our president tell China to stop acting like a biatch, but it doesn't work that way

He was speaking to China, the most petulant, wannabe world power ever. They do need to grow up. If they want to play in the international community, they get to play by our rules. If not, well, they can take their toys and invade Tibet again.
