I used to wear Hawaiian shirts everyday. That was not a good look.

They should all dress like Don's brother, Bud.

I'm thinking Obama, as a former Hawaii resident himself, is so damn sick of those stupid shirts (and totally aware they are in no way, shape or form, "Native" Hawaiian garb) that he just went full "Aw hell Naw" on the entire idea

Disrespecting the age-old traditions of the state he was 'supposedly' born in - WTF is this guy's problem?

An online news article describing a picture but not including it should be a punishable offense.

I would normally expect some right-wing backlash along the lines of, "How dare he not wear a suit jacket in the Oval Office!" but then I remembered that most of them aren't even aware that HI is a state.

Seriously, a friend of mine lives there and works part-time at a local gift shop. She stopped keeping track long ago of all the moron Americans who kept asking her if she took American money.

Here's something to think about...
A true Hawaiian wouldn't dis the traditional garb of the state's tourist but a Kenyan would.

Leave it to a dictator-wannabe like FartNambla to try to enforce a dress code among world leaders. Makes me wanna vomit.

I have an associate at work who rotates the same two Hawaiian shirts on casual Friday. Says his wife won't let him wear them around the house anymore.

This is kind of surprising. I thought he was a better sport than this.

Oh well, I can understand not wanting to look like and idiot.

I should be in Hawaii right now running a "money exchange" scam...

Let him know layering is very chic right now, so he should probably start wearing both.

Pompous ass.

When I was first stationed on Guam, the commander of the island, Adm Morrison (Jim's father), allowed Aloha shirts on Fridays for military personnel. His replacement, another stick-in-the-mud, changed that, saying the wear wasn't military.

This is probably what the reason is.

Though when Obama goes to Japan I would like to see him in a karate outfit. That would be kinda cool.

The reason is that conservative blogs would jump at the chance to show Obama with a Hawaiian shirt on with the headline, "Look who's on vacation again!" This is Obama in campaign mode.

You should have heard the uproar when Geilenkirchen did away with Lederhosen Tuesdays.

He's in Japan right now, but you wouldn't know it..........Ninja suit.

Hawaiian shirts are only worn by gay guys and big, fat party guys.

And Obama doesn't look like a big, fat party guy to me.

"Relax," Steele said while sporting a Hawaiian shirt and a flower lei. "We're working hard here, trust me. This is not a vacation."

damn people, give the President a break. He's visiting Hawaii for the first time. Let him embrace the culture even if it comes across a bit touristy.

I want to remind everyone that Friday is Hawaiian shirt day. So, you know, if you choose, you can come in wearing a Hawaiian shirt and jeans.

Is there a lot of crime in Hawaii or am I being misled by Hawaii Five 0?

2011-11-14 11:43:11 AM
Honestly my impression of the article was "Uh... Isn't that kind of offensive? Like asking people to dress up in skins and feather headdresses when they're in Wisconsin?"

I mean, sure, it's nice to see world leaders looking totally goofy, but it's horribly stereotypical. Hell, even the comment on the end about Russian fur hats... Does anyone IN Russia still wear fur hats? Just seems stupid.

Fark yes. Lets do it.

/Love Hawaii (Maui is what I remember best), but hate the cost of living

No. While I never met him, I heard he was kewl as admirals go. Refused to attend the funeral, obviously.

Yup. He learned from Bush, and Kerry, and Dukakis, and himself (there's a pic of him wearing a turban)-no silly clothes.

Do a standard Google search for "Dukakis". The fourth link down is the GIS. Of the five preview images it shows, three of them are him in the tank wearing the silly helmet.

It's just another manifestation of the fact that nothing Obama does is acceptable. Never mind that it would be perfectly fine and normal for a person other than Obama to do it - if Obama does it, it is unacceptable, because Obama's very existence is unacceptable.

Everyone on the planet needs to accept that when it comes to formal attire, the suit & tie won a complete and total victory a very long time ago.

/most military uniforms are just suit & ties in odd colors with medals

More like a Packers Jersey with a foam cheesehead hat for Wisconsin.

Yeah but even so... They probably don't do the arms-crossed leg kicking dance all the time, right?

The only stereotype I remember about Russia is the phrase "heroic drug use".

FYI,

In Hawaii, an aloha shirt and slacks are acceptable business attire for most circumstances. I think lawyers actually have to wear suit and tie in court and male news anchors wears suits as well. But for everybody else, the aloha is okay in most circumstance.

Except for Dan-O, he likes to wear a tie.

That's nothing. I'm from Hawaii, born and raised. Once got sent on a business assignment to Mississippi, on a government contract.
They demanded to see my passport...

Oh no it gets better. I'm a first generation Asian/Euro mix (Japanese/Portuguese, to be exact).

According to their forms, I don't exist and neither does Barry: Federal security investigation survey forms don't have a "mixed" option.

Or, for that matter, to Friday?
