This reminds me of the 1980s seasons. Man...good times. I love having minor league football in my city.

Yesterday's game was, by far, our best chance at a win this year. It's looking possible.

I can't bring myself to root against my favorite team. I fully expect them to get the #1 pick and draft Luck, but it just seems like it goes against fandom to root for your own team to lose. I'm old enough to remember the last transition we had, and I still remember rooting for them to win in '97. It's not going to change now.

Hey, I'm with you. It stinks. But I don't consider it rooting against them. I'm rooting for their long term future. I love Peyton Manning, but I think he's done. We need to move forward.

I know it's the right thing to do moving forward/long term, but being a fan is never about being rational ;)

I think part of what makes it easier for me is I really don't like Jim Caldwell. I dont like him as our coach. So I'm fine if he gets canned.

2011-11-14 11:15:05 AM
Curtis Painter is playing for his job right now. He needs to get more wins than Miami or Cleveland or St Louis. If he plays well, Indy doesn't draft Luck and he keeps his job. If he plays bad, Indy drafts Luck and cut him loose. Everyone else is ready to throw the season for Luck.

Curtis Painter is fighting for his NFL career right now.

No he's not. Well, maybe he thinks he is, but there is zero chance he's our starter next year. It'll either be Manning or Luck (hopefully).

Oh he's gone. I'd been feeling it for awhile, but punting on 4th and 1 yesterday pretty much broke the camel's back for me. It's not like we lose anything by being aggressive. Punting to get 20 yards of field position is pointless when you're 0-10.

As a Texans fan, I am desperately hoping that Indy wins a couple games this season. Being able to transition at QB from Manning to Luck? That is just friggin ridiculous.

I'm thinking that could be Montana -> Young level of scary (or awesome, if you're a Colts fan). Peyton Manning's pretty much a football genius, and if this Luck kid is anywhere near as good in the pros as he seems to be in college...well, look out.

They definitely have a shot at tying the record, especially if they keep Caldwell. A new coach might get the Colts fired up and cause a change in their attitude. For whatever reason, they have quit playing for Caldwell. If they fire him this week, during the bye, it would give a new coach two weeks to prepare for the Carolina Panthers at home.

Their remaining schedule:
Carolina at home: A good chance, especially if they change coaches now. they have a chance against the Panthers, who have only beaten the Jaguars and Redskins this year. Carolina was 2-14 last year and they still have that mentality. They keep finding new ways to lose.
New England, away: No chance
Baltimore, away: Very slight chance. The Ravens play poorly against teams they should beat, so maybe......
Tennessee, at home: almost a sure loss, the Titans beat them by 17 two weeks ago and the game wasn't that close
Houston, at home: No chance
Jacksonville, away: Without screen plays and dump offs to the flat, Jacksonville has no passing game. Their quarterback is gun shy and cannot throw deep. If the Colts get an early lead through turnovers or a couple of big plays on offense/special teams, the Jaguars will be in trouble because they just don't score that many points. By this game, they will be sure to be out of the playoffs and playing out the string. If the Colts are 0-15 at this time, they will be motivated not to lose them all.

Come on people, they are intentionally throwing the season to get the number 1 pick. I'm surprised more people don't see this. Hell they were 10-6 a year ago and now they are a team that can't even beat it's own meat. This is intentional.

Not having the league's most indispensable player available generally makes the team look like shiat. In a QB-driven league, the Colts went with a washed out retiree, an 0-16 retread, and a Baby Spice impersonator. You can argue the merits of the approach all day (and there is a definite argument to be had), but the Colts did the equivalent of going all-in for the better part of 15 years. If you go all-in 13 times and win everytime, you look pretty damn smart. It's the 14th hand, the one you lose, that makes you look idiotic.

The players aren't throwing the games. The offense is just that bad and that inefficient, it makes it look like it. If you take a deeper look, there are a few, limited positive aspects to this season. Pat McAfee is having a hell of a year punting and on kickoffs. The team is running more effectively than it has in years and without a competent QB to prevent stacking in the box. The offensive line is showing signs of improving despite numerous injuries -- play calling and QB awareness play a huge role in this. A seven step drop with Curtis Painter is pretty much asking for trouble. No one moves into pocket pressure like he does, except maybe Orlovsky and Collins. Despite the number of sacks allowed, the Colts had an atrocious pass protecting line the last 3 years.

Oh yeah I doubt the players are, they still have their future playing years after the Colts to think about. But the coaches and front office defiantly are putting up a half hearted effort.

I'm still taking suggestions. Frontpage for sure. Either Friday the 2d or Saturday the 3rd. December 3d is the day of the Big 10 Championship Football game in Indianapolis at Lucas Oil Stadium at 8pm that night. Would it make more sense to do it that night?

Jim Caldwell is an idiot.

After taking over for Tony Dungy, he redesigned the Colts' playbook, its entire team dynamic around a single, one-dimensional mantra:

Give the ball to Peyton Manning.

"Running game?" he thought. "Why do we need to run the ball, when we can just give it to Peyton Manning? :-)"

"Build a back-up Quarterback? Peyton Manning is the Quarterback. We don't need another! :-)"

"Defense? Who needs defense when we can give the ball to Peyton Manning. :-)"

Right now, Indianapolis isn't even attempting to win games. I'm pretty sure Caldwell told everybody on the team,

"Just forget about this year. This year doesn't count. We'll take a mulligan on this year. Just healthy and be ready for next year, when Peyton Manning comes back! :-)"

I know Indy is the favorite for the "Suck For Luck Sweepstakes", but I've got a bad feeling that, if you asked Caldwell about it, this would be his response:

"Andrew Luck? Why would I want a QB right out of college when I can have a rested Peyton Manning? :-)"

If the Colts want to be successful next year, they need more than a healthy Peyton Manning. They also need a head coach NOT named Jim Caldwell.

One of the funnier things from training camp this year was Orlovsky's first week or so. I think he threw the ball away in the endzone, but it didn't cross the line of scrimmage. That was his first "series" in TC. Some lessons are never learned apparently.
