(Some Guy) Interesting In Thailand they have to bribe citizens with free eggs and rice to get them to recycle. Keep that in mind the next Sunday night you're up late sorting apart your glass, aluminum, and cardboard trash   (soshiok.com) divider line 71

Meanwhile in tampa fl....

You pay money to a company that takes your recyclables and makes money off them.

Or in my personal case I'd have to drive a few miles for the privilege of recycling.

You mean you don't do it every time you throw waste away during the week, subs?

paper tissue is recyclable, especially as reproductive fluid only survives three days.

/recyclers also use gloves... don't they?

In Omaha, we went from a sorting truck to a regular dump truck for recycle. That meant we couldn't recycle glass without going to one of a the few glass recycling centers during business hours. Now no one recycles their glass; it's way too much of a hassle.

Way to go Omaha.

/CSB, no?
//At least all of the currently accepted recycle goes into the same bin, and you don't have to sort it.
///And you get a free green brick-bin that also doubles as a mold for snow bricks for a kick-ass igloo in winter.

In our neighborhood we were given a free single sort recycling program to use. They drop off a large green container that you can dump your mixed recycling into. They give you a list of common items that can't be recycled (grocery store plastic bags, egg cartons, wax containers, food tainted items, etc) and do pickups every 2 weeks.

There is also a rewards program associated with it. So every 2 week I get 70-90 points at Recyclebank (new window) I can use towards coupons. In fact I just burned up 100 points for a 20% off shoes.com coupon.

Not too shabby for a free recycling program.

That's an awfully broad statement on recycling. I don't suppose you have a better solution to recovering rare earth metals like lithium? We only have a finite amount of metals, and landfill mining isn't cost-effective compared to recycling.

There is little initiative in Thailand for recycling programs. How it usually works is the country's poor goes around at night to trash pick the materials to make $ at the recycling plant. They continue to burn their trash despite huge anti burn campaigns. They are a few decades behind on these issues. I actually plan on finishing this education degree and going further onward into conservation biology and return to Thailand to do environmental education work. Most are just ignorant about these subjects and do care about what they can do.

I live in Thailand and every month or so I load up the pickup with the glass, paper and plastics and sell it to the local recycling plant.

It's nothing to do with 'having' to bribe people, but that there is still meter deep standing water in northern Bangkok and normal garbage collection is impossible. If people are going to walk through water with a bag of cans and bottles they want something in return.

Normally the Thai garbage men go through the garbage and sort it all themselves when they pick up your trash, so many people don't normally bother to do it themselves.

It's easy to be lazy about recycling when you need to drive to a recycling center to do it. It's nice here in Sweden - all apartment complexes have multiple bins for assorted recyclables, and every grocery store has an area in the parking lot for homeowners to do the same, as well as the usual bottle/can recycling stations. You're left without an excuse not to do it.

2011-11-14 08:06:54 AM
Recycling here is free, you don't have to sort anything and the proceeds from material sales (~$20/ton) goes to the city. It also saves us from paying for another landfill as quickly.

This.

I enjoyed the show quite a bit, but you had to watch it with your skeptic eyes on. I personally love the anti-vaccine episode, but ones like the recycling episode were chock full of misinformation and half truths.

Sure, but you know it's going to come to that. If nothing else, when we run out of oil we'll be mining the plastics to get it back. In a way all we're doing by throwing stuff away is postponing it's recycling.

FDA rules prohibit using post-consumer waste for food and beverage containers because there is no way to guarantee only a certain type of plastic is used, and only specific types of plastic can be used for food packaging.

/father handled compliance in a plant that made plastic containers for drug manufacturers

I don't sort shiat. I live in a very rural area, so I don't even have trash pickup. Instead, I just dump all my trash at a transfer station and the prisoners sort it out from there.

Bonus? I can dump anything there. Old Stove? Sure. Leaves? Why not? 55 gallon drum full of bacon grease? YOUUUUUU Betcha.

2011-11-14 08:29:15 AM
In Columbus, you don't have to sort, but you do have to pay to have recyclables picked up separately. The city wants to change that. The other option is to take recyclables to one of the area's drop- off points yourself. The pick- up option is pretty cheap, so that's what we use. Recyclables go in one container, trash in the other. Not exactly hard to do this. Metals, aside from food containers, I save up, then take to a scrap place and get money for them.

And I call bullshiat on "Bullshiat" :)

We have single-source, too (except we take ours to the transfer station and don't have pickup). It's awesome. We can even recycle plastic bags and some certain plastic numbers (I think #5 is a sketchy one?) that I guess other places can't. Usually, our trash is about 50% recycling and 50% trash.

We have a big trash bin and a big recycling bin. No sorting, just put all recyclable stuff in the recycle bin and trash in the other. We also get points for our recycling that can be redeemed for gift cards, coupons, etc on their website.

I recycle because its easy and free, before this program we opted out of all recycling due to the hassle. I care about the environment, just not enough to put forth any effort.

I suppose that spending the sizable amount of energy to create the very reusable and useful material of aluminum and then burying it when finished makes a certain kind of sense. I'm sure that the almighty will create more as we require it.

Who cares? I mean wasting energy only hurts the poor and Jesus loves it when the poor starve, die, and come to him quickly. Particularly when they are children. Jesus loves the little children, and so do his priests.

The whole point of that episode was to show how recycling isn't necessarily all good. They never made any indication that recycling is broadly wrong. The purpose of P&T's BS was to challenge accepted beliefs and show people that nothing is either black or white.

We don't have a recycling program in our city. The recycling at the grocery store requires you to separate your recyclables. I don't have room in our house to have four different bins for recycling. I don't commercially recycle because it is a pain in the ass.

I do however reuse whatever I can. Plastic pop bottles are saved for making rootbeer. Aluminum cans are saved as space fillers for my container plants (I buy deep containers, but if a plant only needs 6" to grow well I fill the extra space with pop cans so I'm not using tons of soil), Styrofoam peanuts are saved for container plant filler too or to reuse as packing material, newspaper/paper/cardboard products are saved for either mulching around plants or to making bedding for my vermicompost systems, food scraps go in the vermicompost bin or as chicken feed for my neighbors, egg cartons are saved for crafts or to get more eggs from my friends with chickens, plastic bags are saved for the small trash cans and for extra packing material, beer bottles and wine bottles are saved/washed/sanitized for homebrew beer and wine, and bleach/vinegar bottles are washed out and saved for various fertilizers or pesticides for the garden. We throw out about two-three 10-gallon garbage bags a week and two of those are from catboxes. The other one is mostly kitchen scraps of what I can't compost or turn into chicken feed and stuff I can't reuse, but I am not going to waste my time sorting or gas driving to the nearest recycle center (which is a couple miles out of my way).

2011-11-14 08:54:27 AM
Another thumbs up for single stream recycling. Our recycling bin is bigger than our trash bin, although it get's picked up every other week instead. They both hit the curb full, so my trash can would need to be 50% bigger if we didn't do recycling. We get free yard waste on opposite weeks, Twice annual Large brush collection (they'll take a whole tree if you cut it up right, and twice annual bulk collection (they'll take bulky crap that would otherwise fill your trashcan in one bite; as well as sofas, tires, refrigerators, and other big stuff.

We have a can that is split in half. It is free to have. One side for paper, the other for the cans, bottles, etc. But it is paper, cardboard, paperboard, anything pulpy. It is weird to go to my parents house and see the piles of cardboard on the curb meant for the landfill.

I keep steal, copper, appliances I get from working and hit the scrapyard for cash every month or two.

Honest Bender: Lol, you rubes have to sort your recyclables? Mine all go in the big blue recyclables bin.

Likewise here in the People's Republic of Cambridge, MA. At some point in the future I think there's a plan to go to total single-stream recycling, meaning that you don't even have to separate recyclables from your trash anymore.

And then at some point when the replicator is invented, all trash will just be broken down into raw matter for subatomic-level recycling anyway.
