I submitted this with a better headline: I said, 11 SOUNDS THAT YOUR KIDS HAVE PROBABLY NEVER HEARD

skatedrifter: I submitted this with a better headline: I said, 11 SOUNDS THAT YOUR KIDS HAVE PROBABLY NEVER HEARD

And that one was redlit, so someone submitted it with (what they thought was) a wittier headline.

I have another sound to add to the list:
A tape rewinding.

When was the last time anyone actually heard a needle being dragged off a record? Yet it is still used today in movies when something happened and they need everyone in a party to come to a complete stop and stare in silence.

Obviously it wasn't.

Silence, is conspicuously absent.

The sound a church key makes when punching a hole in a can.

The sounds of bells when dropping coins into a pay phone.

The noise Polaroid pictures made when peeling off the negative.

The harp, clarinet, and flute music played behind the NBC peacock while the announcer said the program was presented "In Living Color... on NBC."

The squeaking noises metal playground equipment made when being used.

The overlapping noise of multiple conversations on CB radio.

What a folded newspaper sounded like when it hit the front steps of a house, after being thrown by a paperboy.

The clink of glass mild bottles.

Empty metal trash cans dropped behind a house after trash day.

I've heard all 11, and all of yours too. I was that paperboy for a while.

The sound a garage door made when you opened it up and it *didn't* have a garage door opener attached to it.

I'm 35, and I remember all of those for the most part. I don't remember the cash register or the 45 dropper ones too much except for movies, and hell, the percolator still comes out during the holidays.

Don't remember ever hearing the whole "High Flight" thing though. But, I distinctly remember channel 56 in Boston used to play the Star Wars Cantina music before they signed on, over their test card.

2011-11-13 02:13:38 PM
The sound of flash cubes...

Remember how they smelled? I used to love that smell.

I actually got to hear a very rare sound in London about 15 years ago. It was the sound of a rag and bone man's horse-drawn wagon with a bell. Surprised the hell out of me.

2011-11-13 02:33:27 PM
The sound of a cow-bell rung from the back door signaling that it is time to get your little ass home for dinner.

2011-11-13 02:35:19 PM
There's a restaurant in Pasadena that still uses an old cash register - even older than the one in the article's clip, looks like a relic from the Wild West saloons...

I'm answering Y/N for my 8 year old boy.

1. Rotary Dial Telephone

My son had one as a toy when he was a tot.

2. Manual Typewriter

Bought a 1930s typewriter for my son last christmas. He had been begging for one for years.

3. Coffee Percolator

This one's a no.

4. Flash Cube

This one's no.

5. TV Channel Selector

No.

6. Record Changer

Yes on this one. We have a record player and both sets of grandparents have one with changer. Many shops around here play vinyl. Actually, who *doesn't* have a record player in this town?

7. Gas Station Driveway Bell

Yes, there's no self-service gas stations in this state. You can also hear 'em at oil change places & auto shops.

8. TV Station Sign-Off

Nope. Not that we do the tv thing anyhow.

9. Cash Register

Yes, lots of business around here go for the clunky vintage cash registers.

10. Film Projector

Yes, my mom has subjected my son to reels of family movies and slide shows.

11. Broken Record

Repeat the answer to #6

/So final tally is 7/11 for my kid

TV Station Sign-Off

Heh. I remember that. Afterwards, you'd either see this:

Or this:
upload.wikimedia.org

KTLA (Los Angeles) used to show the Indian head one.

Some stations also showed the Television Code commercial (new window) before signing off.

I remember seeing this, and I remember growing up here and hearing the national anthem and a video of the flag or a test card, then a goodnight and switch to static. That never happens anymore.

9. Cash Register

Actually, M.I.A. just brought that back around a couple years ago.

Flint Ironstag: When was the last time anyone actually heard a needle being dragged off a record? Yet it is still used today in movies when something happened and they need everyone in a party to come to a complete stop and stare in silence.

About three days ago, damn cats. Staying with a early 20s friend who is into old-timey things, so I've heard the record changer, record skip, manual typewriter, and coffee percolator this week. Kids aren't really missing all that much.

I have a friend that is a teacher. For one of his art classes, he'll break out his slide projector to show various artwork samples, since he has thousands of slides already setup in carousels.

The kids get a kick out of that piece of technology. I would imagine the clack-clack of the carousel progression would be a sound most kids don't hear very often.

In my 'hood, every mom had a bell that sounded a bit different. Everyone knew by the sound whose bell it was.

Also, we only needed to rotary dial the last four digits of the phone number.

And twice a week I'd wake up to the sound of the milk man whistling in my kitchen. He'd walk right in and put the milk, eggs, and cheese in the fridge for you. The whistling was so you knew not to shoot him, I guess. Mr. Brooks, that was his name.

Otherwise known as "eleven obsolete pieces of junk that old farts think they're clever for knowing about".

Sorry old farts, you can keep your one-crack flashbulbs and crotchety film projectors, while the kids take a thousand shots in a row with the modern flash system in their digital cameras and share videos they took using their iPhones over Youtube. Tech marches on.

Then go to your father's grave and say "I HAVE NO IDEA HOW TO SHOE A HORSE OR DO LAUNDRY ON A WASHING BOARD, FATHER!" When you're done, you can jump back in your Chevy, go home and toss your clothes in your Maytag and feel smug about yourself some more.

You don't know what a dot matrix printer sounds like? YOU SPOILED, ENTITLED MILLENNIAL! My burger won't flip itself! Go live in your mom's basement where you belong, you hippie loser! BOOTSTRAPS!

Well, the sound of a gas station ding-dinger is featured in a Call of Duty: Black Ops multiplayer map, so it is a safe bet that millions of children have heard it.

The sound of a baseball game. You know, just the game. Without all the music shiat and announcers constantly yapping and yadda yadda. Oops, wait,, my onion just fell off my belt...wait...

15. Music without samples in it.

Chickens in the back yard (75 years ago, lotsa small-town folks had 'em).

The tinny sound of an AM-only car radio.

2011-11-13 03:06:48 PM
the sound of the push wheel mower. the shifting of a manual transmission car-somewhat. popping the pull ring off a can of soda pop-both the hissing sound of the soda and the metallic sound of the tab being removed.

The elderly should have stayed on subsidized dial-up with free AOL subscriptions. It was better when that was all they had. It kept them from getting themselves into trouble like they do now in the Fox news comment threads.
