This is a great remix - much more prominent bass.

I bought this CD used once, and found that it had the entire band's autographs inside. Score!

Four songs that blew me away this week -

Maim - Deceased to Exist (new window)

Pseudogod - Illusion of Salvation (new window)

Deathchain - Cthulhu Rising (new window)

Deadnight - Heaven Shall Burn (new window)

/Death is awe-inspiring

If you're not listening to the new Esoteric album, you aren't listening to one of the best albums of 2011.

Also, the new Blut Aus Nord album is streaming over at Pitchfork (for some reason), and it is expectedly amazing.

In non-metal news, two new albums that are really great are the new Rome and Of the Wand and the Moon (this one might actually be my favorite album of the year) albums.

Yes it is.

Been mainly listening to the new live Rush cd this week, but I've also been digging some Yakuza (not new mind you but if you've not heard them, you should.)

Be That As It May (new window)

Testing the Water (new window)

Someone (Adebisi maybe. We both like the same kind of wacky proggy tech stuff so I look for him in SHMHC threads), posted Blotted Science a month or two back. They have a new EP - pretty short but it delivers

A Sting Operation (new window)

RIP Chuck

Yakuza's great, as is the new Blotted Science EP.

And speaking of wacky prog, the new Cynic EP (new window) is phenomenal.

Esoteric sounded almost cheery at the beginning of the song, I was starting to get worried... and then they hit the sweet spot. Good stuff.

uhh. Uh huh huh. Look up (you were only about six hours too late for a simul-post though).

This may be the best doom album of the year:
The Wounded Kings - Gates of Oblivion (new window)

one more killer track -

The Wounded Kings - The Cult of Souls (new window)

Uncle Acid is very good, don't get me wrong - I listened to the crap out of it when I finally got my hands on it - but the whole album didn't hold up for me as well as I hoped it would.

It's probably one of my top ten doom albums this year, but, for example, I liked The Black Oath, Thorr-axe, and Blood Ceremony more, and I'm still waiting to listen more thoroughly to Loss, Lord Vicar, Isole, the new Esoteric, and a couple of others).

some samples:
Thorr-Axe - Sundering of the Frost Giant (new window)

Blood Ceremony - Coven Tree (new window)

Black Oath - The Black Oath (new window)

Loss - Silent and Completely Overcome (new window)

Lord Vicar - Sign of Osiris Slain (new window)

I'm probably not the best judge, because outside of Virgin Black I'm just not into the whole slow, plodding doom stuff, but none of them impressed me like Uncle Acid did. I can definitely see the appeal if that's your thing, though.

You're both forgetting 40 Watt Sun.

Ho ho, you think the modern consumer of music or metal fan cares about artistic merit in their music. As long as the production's shiny and the guitars go deedily, the sheep are content (add "deep" lyrics for the pretentious sheep).

I can definitely appreciate the talent behind this, but it doesn't appeal to me as much. I just can't put my finger on why. Too much rock in it maybe? He really does sound sad though.

You should check out his previous project Warning, especially the album Watching From a Distance. Similar to 40 Watt Sun, but it has more of a funeral doom sound to it, and the song structure themselves seem less based on rock music and more on kind of a hymn-like structure.

Definitely much better. Maybe it's his vocals that just don't grab me.
