From any of these photo montages, I never really get a feeling for how widespread this sort of thing is in Detroit. I'm sure I could go to parts of any town -- including this one -- and find similar shots of decaying abandoned buildings. I know Detroit's economy is truly in the shiatter, but these shots always give the impression that the whole goddam city is like this, and I just don't know how widespread this is.

I mean, Detroit's screwed enough without us piling on.

This, and the first part of the headline suggests subby's seen one of the (too?) many photo essays of Detroit's blight, but then the "WHOA" shows that subby hasn't.

TFA is pretty much par for the course for "pictures of Detroit's blight".

My husband and I were on Belle Isle in 1999. It was all clearly old, but really interesting. That is really sad. The city was clearly in big trouble when we were there, but the level of decay and destruction since then is amazing.

This. People live there, have good times, have bad times, make their lives work in some way. I don't think we should turn our backs on a city and at the same time, I don't think we should paint the place as some sort of unlivable hellhole. We should work towards making it better.

No, we don't need another outdated slideshow.

Did you see all the money the UAW spent on those stadiums in downtown Detriot?

You'd figure the union would not be wasting money on superfluous crap like that.

So. . . we can expect a rash of talented new hip-hop artists to arise out of Detroit, now? Excellent.

That reminds me, if anyone cares, there's a Friends of Belle Isle meeting thing on Tuesday. Mayor and City Council President is gonna be there. New join-up-the-groups-and-fix-up-the-place initiative apparently. Hope the disc golf kids show up too. 6-8, if you might want to go, EIP and I'll forward the RSVP info.

I really did enjoy these slideshows way back in 2007, but now they feel a little forced.

That said, I bet you could make some money selling an urban assault fantasy porn type of thing to the guys who read Soldier of Fortune. I really think hunting people for sport will be the next UFC.

Trance750: We could be seeing the world's biggest ghost-town form, right before our eyes

Not really. The outer edges, sure, they're already that way. Downtown proper and some of the defined neighborhoods are doing fine - but a radical re-imagining of what the city is is gonna be required for sure. But that said, I can see fantastic art, awesome music, eat great food, and not really worry about my safety at all if I have a modicum of intelligence about me. And friends keep moving there, opening businesses there, making art there - because they can. Like the whole damn state, if you're still here you're gonna fight til the bitter end. Don't count Detroit out yet.

It really is fascinating. There are the Chinese ghost towns, but with Detroit we're talking about a former industrial power that houses/housed many millions of people, a thriving cultural center in the leading world power. And now it's crumbling away like dust as we watch, in the span of just a few decades.

Try Saginaw, my hometown. There are parts the Google Street View car flat out refused to go. Anything east of the river ought to be lulz. West side near the river is getting hinky too.

And my parents wondered why I was in such a hurry to leave (new window)

real shaman Thank you, UAW.

Detroit was already a shiathole in the '80s, when GM was posting record profits. Besides, it's not the UAW's fault that, after decades of complacency brought about by lack of competition, the US automakers were suddenly challenged by Japanese companies which made a superior product.
