(LA Times) Obvious The Obama administration just awarded a $433-million smallpox drug deal in a no bid deal. Never mind that it costs about $255 per dose, or that they were a major contributor to his campaign. So, there's always that   (latimes.com) divider line 196

because, when foreseen, it is easy to remedy them; but if you wait until they approach, the medicine is no longer in time because the malady has become incurable; for it happens in this, as the physicians say it happens in hectic fever, that in the beginning of the malady it is easy to cure but difficult to detect, but in the course of time, not having been either detected or treated in the beginning, it becomes easy to detect but difficult to cure.

-Machiavelli

This $255 per dose medicine is meant to cure the disease after it has already progressed past the point where the less expensive medicine can work. Also, this is (presumably) the first large run of the drug and so it is most expensive now, at the beginning.

It's not news, it's Fark.

True. But the Republican wood at the sound of "Reagan" is one of national pride and goodness, that an eagle could perch on, with crepuscular rays in the background. The Democrat wood at the sound of "Reagan" is all gnarled, festered, and rapey, and has a cum-stained Che Guevara t-shirt as a best friend..

Just doing a little bit of research, apparently the USSR had a Smallpox 'factory' set up and running for decades to create Smallpox weapons.

I 'agree' with the idea of being prepared, but at $255 a dose, it seems highly suspicious.

Obama is far from perfect, but he's still better than the alternative. Any of the Republican candidates would be giving away pieces of the White House to friends and family by the end of their first week.

Russia's giving Iran nukes, our government may well be operating on the premise that they've distributed smallpox as well. I don't know these things but it's my first thought.

I remember getting a smallpox vaccine before going to Russia. Why? I'm not sure, but apparently there are those who believe it could still be out there, and that it could possibly be weaponized. Frankly, I don't see what it hurts to have a treatment on standby in the event, however unlikely, of a large scale outbreak.

Give him a break, he's worn out from years of democrats ramming their iron hard agenda down his throat. Democrats are constantly up his ass with their class and religious warfare. Democrats want him to go down, and they keep sticking it to him. It's a hard thing.

$400 million for a disease that barely even exists anymore.

Is Obama not telling us something that we should know? Or is this just a gigantic $400 million kickback?

I'm probably angry either way.

Life is an amazing thing, you'd be surprised at how resilient it can be.

The only thing that concerns me is the price tag. I've come to accept that the government likes to have fifteen different contingency plans for every conceivable possibility, but the cost of $255 a dose seems a bit high.

well seeing as how ST-246 is owned^ by Siga, who else are you going to allow bidding on? Companies that don't own the intellectual property? Or do you guys want Fartbongo to seize the IP by force, aka what fascists do? And what if there was a smallpox attack? Don't you want us to be prepared?

I guarantee, if Obama turned down this deal, the headline would read "Obama prevents US from being prepared for a biological attack"

Yeah, I'm not surprised by the no-bid thing. They're not supplying tires to the government, after all.

It's a patented product.

Again, the only problem I have is the $255 dose cost.

Crying wolf means that when you whine about secret muslims and birth certificates, eventually no one is going to pay attention to what you are pointing at even if it is standing right in front of everyone. So yes it is crying wolf.
