I love lamb but it is VERY expensive by me. I haven't done a leg of lamb in the smoker since I moved here.

Two or three times a year for special occasions. On the other hand smoking a turkey for any old party makes it into an occasion.

Now I'm all hungry for smoked turkey.

It's not by me. Not dirt cheap but certainly reasonable, especially if you go for the shank instead of chops, doubly so if you just have a lamb kafta/kofta/pick-your-English-spelling-dammit sandwich, and most if you just find a farmer or butcher who'll sell you large quantities (plenty of 'em, but I've got no freezer space yet for it).

/yay local Middle Eastern population!

I live in Montana, where there are more cows then people. Around here lamb is expensive as hell, usually double the price of beef on any cut (and three times the price on ground). Also mutton is almost impossible to find. If I could afford it I would eat more lamb then beef, not that I don't like beef, lamb just has a lot more flavor.

I tell my g/f, if lambs weren't so cute, they would have been extinct a long time ago.

My wife made some mousaka a couple weeks ago and used lamb shoulder chops. She had a hard time finding any decent cuts. Can't find lamb that easy here in NM.

i look for lamb only between xmas and easter. usually between these two high demand times there is a small window with great retail prices. i seem to remember about a dozen years ago it was real cheap right after easter.

I'd buy a lot more lamb if it was a bit cheaper. But spending $25-$40 for a leg or rack of lamb just isn't cutting it for me. Also, $7.50 for one lamb shank (small) isn't practical with my budget.

/I'm in Colorado and it's the same as what tjsands1118 reports.

//My dad used to eat/cook lamb quite a bit. It's good!

Mmmmm ... lamb and mint jelly!

The stores are full of relatively cheap New Zealand lamb but I don't eat as much as a should--too lazy to wash dishes. I've also had goat--it's a bit tougher, stringier, and gamier than lamb, but good in a stew or roasted.

Sheep are very heavy croppers--they cut the grass right down to the ground--but they are smaller than cattle and thus "greener" because the smaller animals use a lot less feed, water, and space than the larger animals to make the same amount of protein--fowl and "small cattle" as they call guinea piges, rabbits, goats, etc., are big in the developing world because they can feed people quality meat for significantly lower prices--and most of the smaller animals can be fed by-product and waste rather than forage crops and grain.

I actually prefer the cheaper cuts of lamb because I find they have more flavor. The lamb shoulder chops are great, a bit fattier, but done on the grill they are amazing. And then if you have a butcher where you can get cubed lamb shoulder, it makes great stews. Also lamb necks if you can find them, they are very similar to oxtails and give amazing flavor to soups/stews.

THIS (about the shoulder chops). I used to get the premium cuts of lamb, mainly because we had it so infrequently that I figured the extra expense would be worth it. Then a friend introduced me to his neighborhood butcher (last of a dying breed, unfortunately) who MADE me buy the shoulder chops. Man, did they ever crisp up nice on the grill, and the drippings made an onion gravy that was to die for.

Thanks for the idea for Tuesday's dinner. I'll buy the chops tomorrow, let them sit in my super secret rub (cough*saltandrosemary*cough) overnight, and then that evening I will be in heaven.

I'm thinking of starting a shepherding business for people with insomnia. Basically, when you're trying to go to sleep, I have a guy bring a few hundred sheep into your house (more, if they'll fit) so you can count them.
