This is exactly like drunk people believing they're not drunk. You can't tell the difference BECAUSE YOU'RE DRUNK.

I thought fMRIs had lifted this veil a decade ago.

EEG, MEG, fMRI, and a few other functional brain scanning techniques. It isn't that this is new, it's that the majority of people just aren't informed about neuroscience discoveries and a majority of those uninformed people either (a) don't care or (b) won't change their mind anyway.
