That might be the show's most enduring legacy. Ion drives, phased energy weapons, tricorders (which are closer to existence than you may realize), they're working on tractor beams for fark's sake, and actual cloaking devices have been made.

Granted, I only grazed the article, but in what way is this different from the ultrasonic waterpick things at the dentist? Just bigger?

This article had all the bubbly cheerfulness of a press release. My suspicions have been raised as to the veracity of these claims.

Here's a big what if (imagine for a moment too, following the current conversation of this thread):

What if all the technology (as absurd as some of it could be) that we find it most shows, just could be a reality one day (or a very close brother/sister to said tech). All this amazing technology we see in these shows could happen, not saying it won't is something poorly thought out. Some of these science fiction authors/creators put quite a good bit of thought into their imaginary inventions.

It really just boils down to one thing: Don't cast down someone's crazy idea that seems way too fictional for the now, because something will happen within the technological world that may just make that idea a reality, or an earshot of it.

I have a tricorder app for my iphone. it doesnt measure much, but it does give me GPS coords, decibel level, and magnetic field strength, using im assuming the the compass. It could also easily include light level sensors, more advanced em field readings using the wifi and probably some other things i cant think of....

My original Ferengi tricorder. Circa 2007. My current gear is much more advanced but I can't take a photo of it because my only camera is in the handheld.

This article lacks the two things I want to know:

1. How does it work exactly?
and
2. Does it eliminate bacteria?

FTA: Purifying run-off is costly - each cubic metre of water used for cleaning in the nuclear industry can cost around £10,000 to subsequently treat.

But nuclear energy will solve all of our energy problems! Nuclear is so cheap and endless!

Let me know when they develop warp drive and transporters. Then I'll be impressed.

Wasn't this technology developed like 15 years or so ago? I seem to recall a Hobart-sized model back then demonstrating the principle.

The article is a bit over-stated. If a cubic meter of water cost $15,000 to treat always nuclear power would be a bit more expensive. Some water waste might be expensive to treat(I imagine that's a summary estimate of what it costs to remove, store, handle, transport, receive, and process that water.) but most of nuclear energy's waste water gets left in a tank to decay then pumped into a local body of water once it's no longer contaminated.

1 gallon of waste water for every 25 gallons of clean water and you stay under all of your discharge limits. And if you think that sounds shady; tap water exceeds the discharge limits for most industrial purposes so don't get too uppity.

There also used to be one on the Android Market. Unfortunately, it looks like CBS took exception to it, and it's no longer there. Which is too bad, because it combines about a half dozen apps - acceleromter, magentometer, location, both cell-system and GPS based, with a compass, sound meter, signal strength from both the cell system and WiFi, and solar radiation

Therefore, I may or may not still have a copy on my Android phone. .

I think I still have a copy of that in one of my backups. Shouldn't be too hard to find it "third party" somewhere in Internetland either.

Actually, sonic showers predate Star Trek. Lots of golden-age sci-fi mentioned them. Similar devices included showers that used some frequency of light (usually ultraviolet) for personal cleansing. If I had time, I would go dig through my collection of early sci-fi, but some of the books I have (esp. the Ace Doubles) are getting fragile.
