Look guys! Someone who doesn't know how ethnicity and races work!

Newflash kiddo: Latinos come in many flavors: White, black, native american, mestizo, mulatto, East Asian, etc.

Hint: Latino is a denomination by origin, not a racial one.

Do people in (for one example) the Dominican Republic, break themselves down by race? I was under the (quite possibly mistaken) impression that they are so mixed together, that they just think of themselves as Dominican, and let it go at that?

I finally got to see Colombiana last weekend. I don't care what anyone says. it was a great movie and she can act. I preferred her looks before she got super skinny, though. She is beautiful in Guess Who.

Another star is born. Now that she is successful she can move on. It's amazing how much less you can tolerate in a partner when you don't have to. Probably one of the reasons why the divorce and unmarried rates are as high as they are in our rich, rich world.

As someone from Dominican Republic I'm getting a kick out of this reply :P

Yes, we break down ourselves by race. It's even in our ID cards (Kinda redundant if you ask me :P)

Well, that's too bad. I guess I hoped Caribbean countries were ahead of us when it came to that.

How about Brazil? Any Brazilian's out there that can enlighten us?

I'm not Brazilian (kinda obvious now XD) but I can tell you they do it too. I remember their census forms have an area dedicated to the subject where people define their ethnicity (they tend to go for white though even when they're kinda light brown. Y'know, the societal perks attached to it and all that).

In DR you don't do that though, the state worker determines your "race" by skincolor, most people get mixed though :P

No, sadly, although most Dominicans are mostly African in ancestry, a lot self-identify as "Indians." I'm not kidding. I lived in the DR for a year. People there have national ID cards. The card has either "B" for 'blanco' (white), "N" for "let's see what the filters do with 'negro'" (black) and "I" for indio (Indian, specifically Taino). The vast majority of my friends there had "I" on their cards. To Dominicans, Haitians are 'black" or "African" and they're a mix, but mostly "Indian."

Mugato has a point. Latin Black is not Black Anglo...... and some groups who aren't Puerto Rican will make sure you know damn well that's the case

Regina King is Black black, Anglo black. She ain't never gonna be tapped for Uhura in this day and age.

Zoe Saldana is Black enough. She gets the roles the Regina Kings would never be offered, because she's just black enough without being *that* black.

And I realize this all falls apart when bringing Kerry Washington ;) into the picture. Except on second glance, when comparing Kerry to Regina then Kerry to Zoe............. it doesn't.

Naaah, he doesn't really have one.

Many USAmericans view places outside their country as homogeneous places and that may be somewhat accurate for countries in Asia, Europe and Africa. Not in America though.

America, the continent, is a melting pot of races. From the Aleutians to Tierra del Fuego, all of these countries have a mixed population of whites, natives, blacks, east asians and middle easterners. The major variations are these: Outside the tropics (Cancer and Capricorn), whites are the majority, Inside the tropics, natives or "mestizos" are the majority, except for the Caribbean where mulattos and blacks are the majority.

And those "groups" can blow themselves for all I care.

They're just calling exclusivity for being black so they can play the oppressed card and how nobody else understand their plight and discrimination.

Fine. Except I know people from all over South America, some who are blacker than Wesley Snipes who would give you a Colombian necktie if you called them black. Whatever.

Your point being?

Nobody cares if someone doesn't accept it, what they are it's not going to change.

And you have to understand where it all comes from:

Back in colonial times being black and being mulatto meant the difference between slavery and freedom. Obviously people wanted to deny everything that was black because nobody wants to be a farking slave.

It happened in the States too (albeit to a lesser degree since in the States being mulatto didn't really freed you of slavery), so I don't know why you're so stubborn. In 1916, Jimmy Claxton, a black man, managed to play for the MLB by passing as a native american (at least for a week until his black roots were found lol)
