I'm going out on a limb and say since Asst. is the accepted abbreviation, and there was no period after Ass that someone did it on purpose.

In Britain, the appropriate abbreviation would be Arse Coach. Wenger for short(er).

Many years ago I had an argument with a secretary for the deparment I was working for that Ass was an unacceptable (although quite humorous) abbreviation for Associates (as in Lukahtmiteetz & Ass). She did tend to leave the full stop/period off, though.

No, "Ass" is a perfectly acceptable UK abbreviation for "assistant", and the full-stop is considered optional in capitalised sentences ... but they could've handled that better.
