I'm surprised they didn't try to spin it into a "value-add" and imply it protected you from zombies or something.

Dang, I have to go find that thing. I have no idea where I put it.

Cool! We get a new ipod. We've used the hell out of ours, so I guess we're lucky nothing caught fire.

Yea, mine was well worn and the screen broke. Registered today, and I am looking forward to a replacement.

Ha! Now that would be funny. I actually don't know where it is because I have since bought both a Touch and a Classic.

I've got two, but I never use them. In fact, I'm not even sure where they are. I prefer the iPhone; that way I can get calls while listening to music.

w00t, mine is second generation.

Still works just fine, and I even put it through the washing machine.

Sweet. I was trying to decide if I wanted to bother replacing the dead battery in ours.

Interesting. That one was my first Apple product ever. As in, it was the first Apple product AND first MP3 player that made sense to me. Not too expensive, $199 for the 2GB version, no moving parts, no buttons that would fall off, or battery lid to lose. Headphones were crap though.

Got a G4 mini after that, updated to a Core 2 Duo a few months later, pretty much 5 years ago exactly. Replaced the 2GB nano with a pair of 4th gen nanos for me and the wife a couple of years ago, switched to a pair of iPhones a few months ago, and a couple of weeks ago, I happened to be given a free iPad 2 :D

I traded the first gen nano, still in full working condition, for a bottle of stoli after a few years, and that guy told me he lost it somewhere a few weeks ago. I've used mostly when mowing the lawns around the house and at the gym, he used it in his truck. Never exploded, but sure was scratched to shiat.

I submitted this with an inferior headline.

All the first-gen iPod Nanos in the household are going back. It'll be interesting to see what comes back in return. Does Apple even have any more of these laying around? They're six years old.

Mine was first gen, and died the first time I got it wet. Piece of crap. I'll send it in, hope they don't send a crappy 6th gen back though. Yeah, I really want to operate a touch screen the size of a postage stamp.

2011-11-12 08:18:01 PM
Mine still works, even though I don't really use it since the headphones died. I never used it much in the first place, so I've been too lazy to get more headphones. But hey, free ipod, why not?

2011-11-12 08:19:03 PM
Thanks subby. Wouldn't have known if you hadn't told me. I have one that's been living permanently in the car since the battery doesn't hold a charge anymore. I'm trading it in. I'd take a nice refurb G6 in exchange for it.

Farker Soze: I'll send it in, hope they don't send a crappy 6th gen back though. Yeah, I really want to operate a touch screen the size of a postage stamp.

SRSLY. I really like my (well-used) second generation nano, for me it's the perfect size for something to listen to either music or recorded news programs, in my pocket. It's light and small, but not TOO small, it fits the hand, it's obvious to tell which way you're holding it (it's not square!) and I have a thick plastic case on it exposing only the click-wheel that lets me operate the thing purely by feel, which is what I want in a "walkman" type device.

With a touchscreen, I'd have to look at the device to operate it, which is one main reason I don't listen to music much on my phone (I'll watch video news on it while sitting at my desk, sure, but not walking around).

I happened to be in Best Buy the other day and saw the latest nano iPods, and was kinda amazed people like that format, because yeah, touch screen postage stamp indeed. Sneeze too hard and I might lose it, too. So, I'm hoping my existing nano lives a nice long life, doesn't do much but what it does it does well, for me.

Yep, mine qualifies - I should get the return shipping box next week. I've gone the way of the Zune/Windows Phone now - so I guess I'll ebay the new one they send me.

Thanks for the explody DIAF mp3 player Apple. It only took you 6 years to realize it.

I wish I knew what they offered as a replacement for this. Think it's one of those little tiny square things?

My bro gave me his 1st gen after he went to some 80 gig ipod classic thing, and it lives in the console of my car. My concern is that the new one won't connect to peripheral electronics doo-dad I have hooked up to the stock stereo.

2011-11-12 09:21:39 PM
still have mine also - I also have a 6th gen nano, which I'm currently on my 5th apple replacement. If they replace these with the current nano we're not any better off...

2011-11-12 09:46:33 PM
Hey, I have one of those! It's been sitting on top of my refrigerator for about a year since I'm more fond of my squat little 3rd generation Nano. I'm glad it didn't blow up while it was sitting around. I registered to send it back as well, no point in keeping it around if I might blow it up one day.

If this was a Zune, there would be no return policy. All their money goes into paying shills and douchebags like you.

MrSteve007: I've gone the way of the Zune/Windows Phone now

I went to the Microsoft event in Chicago last night. The Titan is huge but it's a bit lag compared to the Focus S, Radar, and Focus flash. 6 people won phones and one won a xbox360. I only managed to get 3 months free of Xbox live.
/Lot of women came that were pretty damn hot.

My gen1 1 gig is the only apple I thing I have, and it was given to me as a gift... replaced the battery myself already and still use it.. Use the media player bundled with ubuntu to update it..

what the hell right? just finished the form stuff and apple is sending me a box to replace the old thing..

2011-11-12 10:27:16 PM
Damnit. I have a 2nd gen.

/Still runs like a champ.

My 1st gen Nano just started going flukey this year...what great timing to learn that the battery can get...explodey.

2011-11-12 10:47:35 PM
I actually still do have one.
Perpetually hooked up to my living room stereo, and never used.

I can't wait until they recall the other generations. I've got a 2nd or 3rd gen nano that's has a battery that's always been wonky.

2011-11-12 11:48:48 PM
Dammit, they couldn't offer this for Mini's.

I killed mine in 2006 after the battery went bad and I broke the PCB trying to replace said battery.

/Seriously, who still has a working 2005 iPod of any flavor.

Still pissed you never figured out how to use a farking Touch? And no, it wasn't Apple's design. It was a bad batch of batteries from a supplier.

I stand by my 15 gig Archos Jukebox Recorder (upgraded to a 60 gig drive and RockBox). Actually, I'm sitting by it. I found it in the glove box recently and didn't have the heart to throw it out until just this very minute. I feel kinda bad seeing it in the trash but the drive is flaky and the power connection is intermittent and most of the screws are missing. It really was a trooper, tho.

Now I have a Sansa Clip + that I got for $40. I could pop a 32 gig microSDHC card in it if I wanted more storage. Great for audio books.

I too have an Archos Recorder 20 gig running Rockbox AND an iPod Nano 1st gen running RockBox, so I'm getting two kicks out of this thread. I won't return my Nano if the replacement can't run Rockbox. I just want a mountable drive to dump my music on, I hate iTunes.

2011-11-13 07:12:22 AM
I don't care what they replace it with as long as it'll run Rockbox, because that's what keeps my 1st gen nano still in regular use.

I also despise the touch-screen for certain uses, like driving. I have a shuffle which I only use in the car, as I feel no need to take my eyes off the road while using it.

Hahaha - that's so funny. Now please tell us of the great work you do on your ten year old PC and how you're the smartest person in your office.

Both me AND my partner have these, and the both still work amazingly well. I'm a little nervous the replacements won't be as solid, depending on the refurb job. Not totally sure they will even have "service replacements" given that 5 years is when Apple stops supporting items.

2011-11-13 09:03:24 PM
I've got a first gen nano I inherited from my brother-in-law. I'm in the 'let's not replace it with a sixth gen' camp. I happen to be a big fan of the fifth gen with the camera, or even the fourth gen. The biggest advantage will be that, if it is the sixth generation, the minimum size is 8 gig.

2011-11-13 11:02:13 PM
According to CNET, the replacement is also a 1st gen.

2011-11-15 10:35:10 AM
I still have mine, but unfort the songs on it are spread across a bunch of (some long-gone) machines.

What's the best way to get all the music off it to save for the new one?

\yes, I know that little
