Apos: What?

Pan Am. It's like Mad Men plus airplanes and minus the intelligence that made Mad Men interesting.

Hence my query. Why on earth would anyone find it enticing?

I was excited for it, then I watched the first episode. I didn't care for it and you probably couldn't pay me to watch another episode.

There's a good show lurking around somewhere in "Pan Am," but it needs focus, and the characters need more depth.

Then there's the oddly stylized acting. It took me a couple episodes to realize they were doing it that way on purpose. What "that way" is, I can't put my finger on exactly, which is part of the problem. But it's a rather "look at us, we're acting!" style. I think it's meant to be a throwback to shows of that era, in which reality was heightened (think "Perry Mason").

If they can work out the kinks - coherently gel the soapiness, the intrigue, and the performance style, and give the characters a third dimension - it could be really good. The one thing they definitely have down pat is the sense of being at the beginning of a whole new age, technologically. Watching the show, you definitely get a sense of the "wow" factor that flying had at the time. The show took cues from "Catch Me If You Can" in that regard, and did well with them.

Short version: Not bad. Needs work. No "Mad Men," but then it's not meant to be that heavy. Beats the shiat out of "The Playboy Club," which bombed quite rightly, as it was garbage.

Frankly I think its avionics failed from the very beginning. I think it should be grounded.

It's being dumbed down by executives, who want to assrape the writers into compliance.

In other news, "Pan Am" is being sponsored by PSU.

Heard it's not doing so well in Tenerife, probably due to a collision with another show in the same time slot.

I don't know. their job is inherently uninteresting, so the show is left to Forrest Gumpping its storylines into events of the 60s.

I am assuming they enjoy it more because they don't speak English. Without the dialog it's hot chicks in sexy period costumes.

Well, Norwegians are poor barometers of taste, I mean, they love David Hasselhoff. And Jerry Lewis. That's Norwegians, right?

I remember when Patrick Duffy's failed first series Man From Atlantis became a hit in China. This was 1977, mind.

The immense overseas success of Santa Barbara also comes to mind. Too braindead for Americans, but Europeans felt plenty of love for it.

Would discussing Baywatch be redundant?

Davis Hasselhoff was not the reason why Baywatch was popular around here.

That could be hilarious, sort of like the dialog in the old Extreme Elimination show from Japan.

How incredibly fitting for a series based on that airline!!! XD

baorao: I don't know. their job is inherently uninteresting, so the show is left to Forrest Gumpping its storylines into events of the 60s.

I get what you're saying, but the show isn't so much about their jobs. It's about how these jobs gave them opportunities to lead more interesting lives. It's the globetrotting. Yes, they do Gump events of the '60s into the plots a little too much. But then, there was a lot of important stuff going down at the time this show is taking place. Men in space, the cold war, civil rights and racism, and the murders of major national and world leaders pretty much have to be addressed in a show that starts in 1963.

I never really understood how Baywatch sucked until I accidentally watched it with closed captioning on and had to read the writing. Gaaaaaaaaaawd.

Dallas was also huge somewhere. For years people in some country(s) thought that all Americans lived on huge estates, dressed to the nines all the time, and wore cowboy hats.

Am I dating myself? I barely remember Dallas, and I don't think I ever saw an episode.

It's expectant. It conveys the fleeting impression one has her attention. And I'm sorry, did you not see her ridiculous body? They did not make 13 y/o girls like that when I was in 8th grade.

She's not bad looking, but she is weird looking - like a cross between Courtney Love and Mena Suvari. That said, there is something dichotomously sultry/innocent about her on that show.
