Well, just running comparative numbers, 17 dead out of a population of 160,000 would be like 37,188 dying in an event in the US. So yeah, I agree that, for St. Lucia at least, the numbers are unprecedented.

Few years ago in Namibia a minibus taxi hit head-on with a huge ore truck. 22 people were killed outright and one guy who had been seen getting on it was missing. He was found later in his village a short distance away. He had minor cuts and bruises and had walked home after the crash.

Not really surprised. The bus drivers are all crazy here and the roads are pretty bad. It's sad but no one is like " Oh no, how could this happen?"
