Japan is like this, for every vending machine selling used school girl panties there is something like this.

I love Japan for that dichotomy. Hello Kitty and Faye Valentine (Cowboy BeBop Faye)

It's a 4 door and seats 5... it is NOT a sports car

I would love to lean back and relax in a comfy chair during my commute, surrounded by an inch of armor. Halfway there.

FTFA: "The concept cars' steering controls give drivers more space up front than if they had steering wheels, Honda said."

Really, over a century of the steering wheel concept which offers an obvious ergonomic communication as to its use, it being replaced for a bit more leg room?

Doesn't driving your kids to soccer practice count as sports?

Does it have a button in the middle to call for a semi to pull into and reload?

your joysticks could have force feedback...... or a rumble pad setting

Having a concept car doesn't mean a thing. GM had a joy stick controlled concept car in the early 1960s. It was called the BOCAR. It was also designed to follow a wire embedded in the highway so you could just set your destination and take a nap.

Well, if they sell it in America it won't matter. Some 90% of the drivers that buy cars in this country can't even drive a manual, you think they have any idea how to interpret the feel of the car through the steering and pedals?

It's actually quite simple to use

The pic of this car reminds me of Tron... I'd cut off other drivers to take them out of the game muahaha

I would buy it, though I imagine it would be an interesting experience learning to drive it.

We have the sensors and processing power available to make it happen. All we need now is someone to successfully integrate the two.

Well it's more than a bit.
Going drive by wire also sheds a great deal of weight (steering column, adjustable seats, pedals and all the linkages) which makes the car cheaper to build and operate.

Steering wheels are great for long drives, but if google is to be believed then we won't be "driving" for much longer. Which means steering control is only for parking or in emergencies.

Do you really want a wheel in your face the whole time when you wont be using it?

/as opposed to a wide LCD screen and endless legroom.

If it is fail wheel drive it is not a real sports car.

Two joysticks?

All I need for MarioKart is one d-pad.

Stupid redundancy engineering.

Yeah, so could I. Too bad by the time this car actually gets into production it'll look just like every other Accord has for the last five years.

The problem with auto drive ends up being liability. After all that actually making something that can drive itself of course. When someone spaces out and has an accident it's an accident. When the computer makes a mistake or glitches they'll have someone to sue. Unless everybody has to sign some waver that they know the risk and can't sue it can't go anywhere.

So, the thing drives like a tank? What is the second joystick for?

No, thank you. You can have my steering wheel, gear lever, and clutch pedal when you pry them from my cold, dead fingers and/or toes.

Judging by the EULA's that we sign all the time, this is probably what will happen.
People are still in the drivers seat and presumed to be alert and monitoring the auto-pilots actions.

Overall tho, I think we could be looking at making car accidents as rare as train accidents if these systems work anywhere near as well as the sales pitch sounds. A few lawsuits here and there would end in an overall savings for the motoring public compared to what happens now in traffic court.

If your robocar runs into me I can sue you and the car maker for a zillion dollars no matter what waiver you signed.

And Logitech will make a dock for your favourite joystick and chair, and for you, too ... smile blithely as it trundles you in and out of Mocha-Choca-Frappa to your robo-transpo, then snicks you into its little cocoon of sustained non-involvement, where the sights and smells of the icky visceral world are replaced by video images of me putting all eight cylinders up your drone arse.

barefoot in the head: put your boot into it and drive, for fark sake.

Why would you want to?
The roads are for transportation, not entertainment.

If automated and networked cars can eliminate things like speed limits and stop lights then it makes the system more efficient. Which means it costs the taxpayers less money and provides a far better service.
You could be spending the time watching movies or reading instead of dodging other cars, all while getting to your destination faster.

/Your V8 sounds like its impeding traffic.

Maybe I'm smug or just being realistic.
I also love to drive but, in exchange for the benefits, I'd be willing to surrender the controls when the time comes.
We'll just have to find excitement from something's besides playing in traffic.
