I'm an unabashed corduroy lover from way back. When I was a kid it was because of the zip-zip-zip sound effects when you walked. When I grew up it was because you could get away with them in workplaces that didn't allow jeans and they looked dressy while going with anything.

This holiday carries a whiff-whiff-whiff of irony.

2011-11-11 02:53:34 PM
So corduroys are hipster now? wtf

2011-11-11 02:53:45 PM
Nigel Tufnel day, heathens.

I hate the zip-zip-zip sound.

2011-11-11 02:57:13 PM
I hate corduroy. I don't need a fabric that makes me sound like "zzwwiiiip zzwwiiiip zzwwiiiip" as I walk.

cgraves67: I hate the zip-zip-zip sound.

I also used to love my mom's wood and leather hippie clogs. She had small feet, so I could wear them by the time I was 8 or 9. Wooden soles against tile and wooden floors at school was a sound I really liked. The sound of corduroys was just a cool and interesting sound to me, like the sound of paper being crumpled or a million other distinctive sounds.

I thought hipsters only celebrated corduroy day ironically?

2011-11-11 02:59:38 PM
Goddamn hipsters with their corduroy pants going to football games and listening to the rap music at Applebee's. I hate them so much.

2011-11-11 03:00:27 PM
hipsters dont wear much corduroy at all

unless maybe it's a vest.

but ya ... no.

2011-11-11 03:01:22 PM
Was forced to wear them as a kid by my stepmother. I had fat legs. And this inane fear that they would catch fire.

/not fat anymore
//not young any more either
///and oddly enough, I have a pair of corduroy slacks somewhere in my closet

I wore mine today. Big ole tan widewales must be 12 years old by now. Used to be huge on me, now they're snug.

No! They've taken my precious corduroy now? What's next - my Birkenstocks and Grateful Dead bootlegs?

Pretty impressive to get cameltoe while wearing corduroy pants.

Back in the early 80's all the guys in my high school wore corduroys (including me). Levi's of course, bought at The Gap, back when they carried Levi's. In the summer guys wore very short OP corduroy shorts.

Have you heard the big news about corduroy pillows?

Corduroy is AWESOME in the deep winter when it's below freezing out. You can freeze to death in your precious gabardine if you want, submitter.

Unless you live someplace warm like Florida or Arizona. That's punishment in and of itself.

I hate you. It's not cold enough down here to start blowing snow. Over in WV they've started so I should be on snow by Thanksgiving.

Yes, please everyone stay on the groomers...no need to go into the bowls or the trees. Nothing to see there. Groomers are the best. Tell everyone.

Grew up in AZ and wore corduroy as a kid except in the warmer months. When it was time to get school clothes in lower AZ the temperature would still be over 100 degrees in August when all the stores put out their fall clothing. Nothing was worse than being out in a scorching day and then having to try on long sleeved clothes. Then the clothes would sit in the closet for couple more months until it got colder.

sheilanagig: you could get away with them in workplaces that didn't allow jeans and they looked dressy while going with anything.

And that is why I wear cords almost every day of the week. Dockers are for dads and golfers. Cords come off as professional for where I work and they're casual enough to fit in with my burnout friends while drinking and playing video games.

There is a guy named Bruce in the NYTimes article comments that tried to trump everybody's good time and light-heartedness with a similar statement. He was taken to task in a series of well written replies. Nobody is dissing the veterans by having a made up fun holiday. Quite the contrary; true Americans are celebrating the freedoms afforded to them by all of the fine men and women of the armed forces!
Corduroy is freedom!

Wouldn't they need to be skinny-corduroy to qualify as "hipster"?

Do hipsters call themselves "hipsters" or would that be very un-hipster of them?

I miss when beards were considered manly and Pabst was for poor un-hip people.

Yep, that's the plan ;)...

Although there is something to be said about good corduroy on a morning when no one is in your way...
mmm, speeds that make my eyes water are fun.

This. When the powder in the trees has been tracked out days before and it's an empty mid week day... it's time for early morning bomb runs to warm up.

you know it's cold out when your corduroys are lined with flannel.
