"burgler"?

That said, AWESOME dog! My dumb dog would maybe have barked, but chase anything? Never. She'd just stand there and stare at me with a look like, "So, you gonna do something about this?"

My dog doesn't bark much, but he barks when the door bell rings or someone knocks on the door. I used to think he was being protective. then one day some people walked into my house by accident. My dog thought that was the best thing ever, sitting there wagging his tail. That's when I knew that he wasn't a very good guard dog.

What you have there is a watch dog, which is almost as good. And you don't have to deliberately make him mean, which is also nice. My cat is surprisingly good as a watch animal. We live out in the stix, and she'll hear a car door or footsteps before I will. She will then look surprised and go to the window to see what's up.

Same. I have a huge, imposing Cane Corso. I thought he'd protect our house from strange people. I was in the garage and had a (kinda creepy albiet harmless) neighbor walk in behind me. I turned and the darn dog was doing some happy dance instead of alerting me. Time to buy more locks.

Good for this doggy, appears he has a permanent home now.

Fireclown - Yes, cats are alert, but you know what Paula Poundstone says: ( I paraphrase) "Your cat will look behind you with the same expression whether it sees an ax-murderer or a moth."

Now that's a dog.

I hope the owner buys him a huge fluffy bed that comes in a huge box that he'll choose to sleep in instead of the fluffy bed.

A good dog is a wondrous thing. A good cat is still a cat. NTTAWWT.

Yes, I always get warning of people knocking the door, but that's not the people I'm worried about. I worry about the people who don't bother knocking (like the accidental trespassers).

Also, he has this weird thing about fence jumpers. Whenever a neighbor jumps our fence, my dog goes after him like a bat out of hell. It's happened at the dog park too. I attribute that to his German Shepard half. So good for protecting the yard, bad for protecting the house. The other half is Lab Retreiver by the way. I love the dog, but he can be bipolar about stuff.

So, am I the only one concerned that the "phone and cable" lines had been cut? Was this just some shiatty burglar who saw too many movies and cut the lines in case they had security? Or maybe this was someone with intent to be in the house with much more sinister ideas?

We have a dog from the shelter, he chased my wife's brother and his friend out of the house when they came in alone to drop off a chair when nobody was home. The chair was left wedged in the doorway...

I'm not sure if my pup would ever attack a burglar or someone intent on a crime. But she hears everything outside my condo door, whether it is all the way down the hall or just outside. She perks up and does this little cough in her throat. The closer they are, the louder she gets.

Other than that she really doesn't bark at all.

/I always thank her for letting me know someone is there. It's a good habit to encourage.

If you cut the phone and cable the alarm system can't dial out. I wouldn't assume anything more nefarious then that without more information.

Well, any dog can if it's raised by a jackass, but I actually thought St. Bernards were kind of notorious for generally having a sweet disposition.

Over the summer the wife and I adopted a 7 month old puppy from the Washington Animal Rescue League. He's a big black lab/german shepherd mix. He's super, ridiculously sweet in general. He wants to play with all other people and puppies, and even is respectful of cats (which I hadn't been expecting).

But I pity the a-hole who breaks into my house or tries to assault my wife when she's out on a walk with him. Even a sweet dog will totally go apeshiat on someone up who messes with their owners or their stuff. That's part of the job they were bred for.

In the first few hours, you'd think the dog would still be trying to figure out who were his new pack member friends, and who were the bad guys. Smart dog for figuring that out so soon!

Same here. Mine is a 120 lb. 11 month old lab/pointer mix. If someone comes into the house for a visit, she'll bark and run. When she does warm up, her tail spins like a windmill, she'll flop over and get all "oooo rub mah belleh!"

I have a big black Lab/German Shepard mix. See my previous comments for his temperment. He's kind of a big sissy around the cats and he minds the baby well.

I got the impression from TFA that the guy was sneaking around in their basement while they were home. It might not be too far fetched of an assumption.

And yeah, good dog! They damn well better keep him after that..

We got a rescued Goat Puppy last year and she's been fun to have around. We know her mother was a pure bred Mini-Schnauzer but no clue about the dad, but my latest theory is that she's part German Shepard because she sheds like no terrier I've ever known.

Anyway, anytime anyone comes into the apartment she gets super excited and will excitedly jump all over anyone that walks in. Anytime my sister comes over, or that lady who she lived with for 9 months before we moved, she acts like like a hyper circus midget and jumps off the walls in excitement.

About a month ago I was in the bedroom folding laundry and she got up and got into her tense predatory pose. She growled, and then like a little streak of gray and tan lightning charged down the hall. I follow her and see my front door cracking and know that there's someone trying to pry the jam open but they stop just as she starts her aggressive barking and snarling. It's really cute when a medium sized terrier can bark and growl with the baritone of a large breed attack dog.

/And she did get cheeze burger that night
//Not sure if the burglar was caught but I did get an email notification that morning about some break ins in our community so I'm guessing it was him

Your dog also may have perceived no threat from the person who entered by mistake. Had the person been furtive or threatening, he may have responded differently.

Two three CSB's: My grandparents had a dog that would let you into their house, allow you to do whatever you wanted, but he would not allow you to leave, until someone who belonged to the house arrived. He'd keep people in the house for hours if necessary.

My sister had an extremely intelligent Mastiff (I taught him in a half-hour to take an empty beer bottle, put it in recycling, and bring me a fresh beer from the refrigerator). One day she was home alone, and the neighbor called and told her that someone had just jumped our 8-foot fence in the backyard. She grabbed her .45 and let the dog into the backyard, and he just missed the guy's ankle as he leaped back over the fence. She opened the back door and yelled at him "Hey, what were you doing in my yard?!?" He said "Oh I thought it was MY yard." She told him "I bet you didn't think that was YOUR dog!"

One day, I pulled up in front of the house, and there was a shady looking salesman on the porch. My sis was home from work sick, so she answered the door in a bathrobe. When I arrived, Thor (her mastiff) was sitting between her feet lowly growling, as she talked to the guy at the door. The guy looked scared shiatless, and would not look down at Thor. Thor decided he needed to emphasize his presence, so he poked the guy in the crotch with his nose. The guy leaped backwards off the three-foot-high porch, and took off at a dead run. The expression on his face when he believed he'd just been castrated was priceless. We laughed and laughed.

He could teach my Mastiff a thing or two... he'd use that opportunity to steal off our the kitchen counters. My 30 pound miniature Shar Pei however would have quickly exhibited that she thinks she is huge and menacing.

I agree, as long as the dog only barks for serious alarms. If my dog barks, I always tell her "Go see!" Then she'll patrol, knowing I'm her backup. She knows not to bark for no reason. My sister's stupid ex-boyfriend had an Australian Cattle dog. They normally do not bark; it's not instinctive to them. So this moron taught his dog to bark. And now it's impossible to get her to shut up.
