Horrible photograph.

2011-11-11 01:58:26 PM
$4.3 million? For THAT? WTF.

2011-11-11 01:59:12 PM
I'm not sophisticated or a photographer. Can someone please explain this to me?

2011-11-11 01:59:14 PM
this is less about how much that photo is 'worth' and more about a stupid person with lots of money.

2011-11-11 02:00:42 PM
It looks like a picture of a sidewalk

2011-11-11 02:02:03 PM
While the value of art is largely in the eye of the beholder, someone with more money than sense bought that photo.

2011-11-11 02:02:25 PM
...I don't get it. Like, is that a conceptual photo or something? Cause really, I have tons of similar photos of one of two rivers in the world that flow north. Those should be worth a fair bit, right?

"Apu, I represent a group of oil tycoons who make foolish purchases. We currently own the worlds dryest lake and the worlds fattest race horse and we'd like to buy your ice-man."

Wow, if this is worth $4.3 million . . .
l1.yimg.com

Then my photo of Fanning Island has to be worth at least $8 million
a6.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net
/bidding starts at $5,000,000

2011-11-11 02:04:07 PM
Wow.

look at that floodplain

2011-11-11 02:04:40 PM
Ah the one percent

Huh. I just Googled "rivers that flow north" and apparently I've been lied to my entire life.

F*cking Florida public schools.

Perhaps my taste sucks but I think I could randomly choose a Magnum photo that's better than that.

/goes to slate, clicks on photo tab, selects the best of five images:

Yep.

And it's face-mounted to acrylic. What that means is that the photo is premanently mounted to the back side of a sheet of acrylic. It's the big thing with photographers now, people like Peter Lik, because it makes the photo look like it's back-lit and it almost "glows."

Problem is, the first tiny scratch you get in it and you're screwed. It can be buffed and polished out but it's going to leave a low spot that will be very obvious. Conservators hate these damned things and a lot of good art is going to be ruined over the years because of this crap. For $4.3 million I'd want better.

Artists should not frame.

2011-11-11 02:07:03 PM
Yah, but they can hang the picture wherever they want, and not have to live there.

Gotta agree with subby's tag on this one...

RedMoskeeto: I'm not sophisticated or a photographer. Can someone please explain this to me?

There is a lot going on. First it's mimicking top level structural photography by keeping all the lines on plane which is pretty remarkable, this had to take some serious scouting to find just the right spot. Next the colors are tertiary and there are only two on the whole shot... the clouds are also on the same plane. That is so perfect it's surreal, but just off enough to let you know its a real shot. Really mind blowing.

2011-11-11 02:10:38 PM
There is absolutely no way I can support extra taxes for the rich.

2011-11-11 02:11:14 PM
There's some really great minimalist artwork out there, but this I just find boring.

2011-11-11 02:11:24 PM
Cue more talk from the GOP about how they refuse to compromise on higher taxes for people making over $1 million a year. If someone paid 4.3mil for this, they most certainly are not a "job creator" and should have all their assets proscribed before we invade the next Muslim country.

I didn't think of it that way. This would look great next to my Thomas Kincade paintings.

Yep. Your picture is more visually interesting to me than the one in TFA of the Rhine. I should be able to get at least $5000 for my pic of the Little Bogue Falaya based on these prices, yes?

I don't know if it's worth $4.3 million. But it's a spectacular photograph. It combines an extraordinary level of compositional abstraction (a series of essentially perfect horizontal bands) with highly-recognizable concrete reality. A million other people walked past that same spot a million times and never had that moment of visual clarity.

2011-11-11 02:18:25 PM
That's not even worth a right click - save image as. But if it were, I'd be able to own it for free.

What a sucker.

RedMoskeeto: I'm not sophisticated or a photographer. Can someone please explain this to me?

Perhaps the buyer bought it because it spoke to something deep within his sould, or perhaps he just bought because he knew that someday he'd re-sell it at a massive profit.

What the buyer may look like:

Nope. Everybody had that moment of visual clarity.

But not financial clarity.

I wouldn't pay 4.3 million for a photograph of Marilyn Monroe going down on Sophia Loren while Jackie Kennedy pees on them.

Maybe 4, but not 4.3.

Lik doesn't mount to acrylic, unless he's changed the style he's been using since he started.

My god, your post! The verbs and nouns. The grammar and clever use of the much maligned letter 'c'! It's beautiful in it's almost surreal, poetic simplicity, yet it exudes a complexity not easily discerned by the uncultured eye.

Wait, never mind that... I just now noticed the contrast between the white background and the Robins Egg Blue band that envelopes your Fark handle. The clean lines. The skillful application of contrast seen in the 'Quote' buttons shadow effect. From the right vantage you can see the culmination of centuries of artistic evolution. It's... incredible!

Wait... BEHOLD THE RAW, UNRESTRAINED SEXUAL POWER OF THE IGNORE BUTTON ABOVE YOUR POST! It's writhing, beckoning nature is the sirens call to my amorous sailor. Must... resist... urge... to click... it....

Damn, seduced by art once again.

Nobody spends this much money because they think it is beautiful they likely bought it as an investment type of thing.

Funny, but harsh. I actually appreciate the photography types cluing everyone in as to the big deal. I see it, just not $4.3 million worth of it.

Jesus some people are stupid if they pay this much for "art". Only thing I'd say about building the house plan is it looks like a flood plain, making the whole building a house plan look a little bit dubious unless it was built on stilts or could float or something.

A bunch of rich people placed an arbitrary and inflated price on a piece of shiat picture that you or I could have pressed a button and created.

What's even better is that he gets to sell it for 2 million and write off the loss on his taxes, getting a million dollar refund from the government.
