Whiskey ages differently; and will remain good as long as it is in the barrel and the seal isn't broken. Bottled whiskey gets bad after a few years or decades; depending on where the bottle is stored and how good the seal is.

I understand there are some really nice whiskys being made in Japan these days, but I have some serious reservations about whether there was enough mastery of malt to have casked an exceptional product there in 1961, when the whisky industry was only a couple decades old at that point.

Japanese whiskey? Um...I've never had a basic Japanese whiskey so no idea. I think I'll stick with the sake that doesn't cost over twelve grand.

Too spendy. I bet for under a grand you could get the same "nose and palate" with a couple of Japanese rental schoolgirls, some decent whisky, and a to go order of sannakji (add a bit of a Korean international flavor to the proceedings). Might even get a "russian finish" for true diversity if you tip the girls well.

Surprisingly, Japan is the second highest consumer of whiskey in the world. The northern island of Japan has a very similar climate to Scotland and that's were they are made.

It's apparently a sign of status of have/drink whiskey.

I forget the brand I tasted... Nikken something? Well it was very good.

I think you're thinking of the Cuvée Speciale Cent Cinquantenaire, which is not 150 years old, but instead is the "Special 150th Anniversary" edition. It's just normal Grand Marnier, blended with 50yr old cognac, instead of the normal VSOP.

Whiskeys spend the majority of their existence in a barn like structure where they mature. Most distillers rotate the barrels threw the barn, with the newest casks at the top and the oldest at the bottom.

The history channel did a 3 hour special on spirits; it was very interesting. If you want to learn more; I suggest that you watch it.

Have yet to try the 18, but the 12 is so smooth its like drinking a top-tier blended whiskey. This is too smooth for my taste. Dont get me wrong, I really enjoyed the delicate floral, fruit undertones, but it just lacks a certain punch, especially at the finish. Even something as simple as dialling up the ABV% to give it a little farewell bite would do wonders. It would also benefit from some coarser flavors. Don't get me wrong, I'll enjoy the rest of the bottle (in fact I think I'll go pour two fingers over the rocks to celebrate Veteran's Day and toast fallen comrades). Maybe it was an unfair comparison day, as it was up against Glenfiddich 30, but the vast gulf in character and body between the two cant be explained only by how absolutely farking incredible the Glenfiddich was.

I had Yamazaki for the first time a week ago, really good stuff. I would say it fully lived up to the Fark hype. The menu didn't specify the age, so I have no idea which one I was drinking.

I'm not saying it was aliens, but.... This was back when the history channel did modern marvels and world war II almost exclusively. It's still on occasionally; and I try to watch it when it is. I disagree with the direction that the programing has taken in the last 6 months or whatever. Aliens ain't history; they are theory. Rabble rabble.

I got open bottles of the Yamazaki 18 and 12 right now, but what I'm really loving is Nikka - wish they'd sell it retail here in the States, sending my in-laws to bring me back a bottle or two when they go to Japan is a pain. Plan on opening the below bottle tomorrow night for the Pacquiao fight.
