Agreed! What a cock. That was high level shiat for home computing back then, obviously the writer wasn't even born at that point.

About the same time (1978 or so), we got to go on a tour of our local Sheriff's office(Town was too small for a regular police dept, but we were the County seat), and we did the full tour. Got to see the gun lockers, heard a story about a guy who jammed a bunch of stuff in the place where the door latches so the spring loaded latch wouldn't engage, and walked out of jail, etc... The coolest part for me was when we saw the computer they used. The thing was massive, it is back in the day where it would be a giant console with a printer bascially built in. It was probably 7 feet high, 10-12 feet wide, and 3 feet deep(I know your perspective is way off when you're a kid, but I'm remembering how much of the room it filled). Anyway, they talked about all the stuff they could do with the computer then did a cool demo with the printer. They inserted some punch cards, pushed some buttons, and the thing kicked out a 15x20 or so pic of the Mona Lisa, using ASCii art. Nothing but characters(Numbers, letters, symbols, uppercase, etc.), overstriking in certain areas multiple times for variations in shading. It was awesome, and I remember at 8 years old being impressed that they had programmed the computer to use the different characters, based on the amount of ink the character used, and then laying more on top to produce shading. Up close, it was recognizable, but at arm's length, it blew me away. The cop leading the tour looked up and said 'OK, who wants to take this picture home?' Commence the chirping of crickets. I was the only kid out of 20 who thought this thing was cool at all.

Out of all the things I lost when the state figured out that my adoptive parents were abusive A-Holes and severed the adoption, this is one of the ones I miss the most. That and my original-issue X-Wing Fighter, T.I.E. Fighter and assorted SW action figures.

The writer of that piece obviously doesn't understand the concept of history. Maybe he doesn't even know of an age where he can't play 'Angry Birds' right there on his phone. What a douche.
