Muta: It is impossible for this to turn out bad.

Assuming they're successful (and if they're not, someone else will be), it'll turn out roughly as bad as the computing revolution. The thing to keep in mind is that despite the fact that these organisms would be replicators, they're in an environment populated by replicators that have honed their skills over billions of years and are the baddest-asses in known space. You're not going to get a green goo scenario. There are lots of bad things that could be done with this technology, but there are a lot of great things, too.

I believe we've already released the Malaria reducing Mosquitos. Hopefully the first few examples will be great successes to balance the inevitable mistakes.

Like all scientific/technological advances throughout human history, it's not the knowledge itself that is good/bad, it's the uses it's put to. Considering our species, I think we're all probably f***ed

Great. So when do we blow up Parma, weaken the seal and let many incarnations of Dark Force loose?

They are limited to 6 at the moment by the size of a standard toilet seat. But that will change.

That is so stupid and nonsensical it completely invalidates anything the article has to say. I almost thought it was a spoofed onion article when i read that.

Eventually, butI think we can all appreciate that we would like it to occur after we're all dead (but I'm sure every generation feels the same way). The universe doens't stop to ask what we want. And I guess our fellow man doesn't stop to ask "Is this maybe a bad idea?"

So yah, we're totally farked...eventually.
