Iowa is really pushing for that Fark state tag recently.

*sign* well, as a citizen of the state, I guess I approve. At least we aren't as bad as Florida. Or Texas. Or Kentucky. Or... shiat what was I talking about again?

What 40 year old looks at that kid and thinks: "Gee, I bet he has some good, well-reasoned ideas and the where-with-all to see them enacted." ? I'm always confused when I see such young people acheive an elected position, but it doesn't necessarily turn out bad. Our congressman, Aaron Schock (IL-R), started out winning a school board position when he was 18. He's now a US Congressman at the age of 30 (and has been for a few years).

This could work out well. He's too young to have many corporate sponsors to sell out to.

So 18 is still considered "kid", huh?

ArcadianRefugee: So 18 is still considered "kid", huh?

Well he hasn't committed any crimes, so yes. He's still just a baby child.

A bank, a postal office, and a couple bars? So he can't even enjoy half the town.

2011-11-11 09:49:43 AM
Considering the town only has 74 people the class presidency was probably a more hotly contested race.

That whole backstory still makes me laugh.

Meh, fail to see the issue.
Old enough to vote, so old enough to take office.

As for age requirements etc. I'e seen incompetent idiots in their 50's in office, and brilliant geniuses still in their teens who are "too young". I fail to see why if they could do a better job.

This guy, meh probably not, it's not like he sought it out, but it's a town of 74, and his Dad used to be Mayor. I think we can all see that he'll be getting a lot of help from Dad, and what harm he might possibly be able to wreak is kinda limited.

Sadly, graduating high school and then holding an elected office while commuting to college is a lot more ambitious than most people in his age group. It may seem a bit silly but I still say "Good On Him".

/this country needs more ambitious 18 to 25 year olds
//preferably ones that aren't evil or psycho

So, he will be able ot sign a liquor permit but won't be able to drink?

This is good. All naysayers are elitist jerks who think they know what's best for everyone.

I'm sending this kid a copy of Roadhouse so he can see how it's done.

This reminds me of a bit that Bill Engvall did about a 19 year old who won the Mayor election:

In Muskogee, Oklahoma, a 19-year-old kid ran for mayor of his town. I was, like, "Good for you. Get out, get a job." Not only did he run for mayor, ladies and gentlemen, he got over 75% of the vote. Oh, my God. How bad a job was that other guy doin' that almost that entire town went, "Eh, we're goin' with the kid"?

God, I would have loved to have been on those debates. You know, the incumbent's like, "If I'm reelected, I will make sure that taxes are lowered, the senior citizens center has hot meals, and I will pave all the potholes in town." And he looks at the kid, and the kid's like Whatever". I don't know about all that, but how about a kegger every Friday?"

Did anyone have a class president that actually went on and did anything?

Nailed it. Mighty fine work.

Good for him. Out of high school and already has a job. It's more than I can say for most college graduates these days.

I heard this kid on the radio this morning mid-interview and was shocked when I realized the host was talking to an 18 year old. Not to say being your FFA president qualifies you for mayor, but he was a write in and didn't sound like a moron. Good for him.

thesubliminalman: Ha, no age or schooling requirements for public office? that explains lots of things.

Did you read the article? The kid at least pays attention and has some idea's about things he would like to see accomplished.

Krieghund: Did anyone have a class president that actually went on and did anything?

In my school they provided an excellent scape goat whenever a "heathly" or minor and unpopular incentive came around.

The mayor mostly runs meetings and shows up to ribbon cuttings. It's the City Manager that wields all the real power.

"For we're always out of luck here. That's just how it is- for instance in the winter. The sides of the buildings, the roofs, the limbs of the trees are gray. Streets, sidewalks, faces, feelings- they are gray. Speech is gray, and the grass where it shows. Every flank and front, each top is gray. Everything is gray: hair, eyes, window glass, the hawkers' bills and touters' posters, lips, teeth, poles, and metal signs- they're gray, quite gray. Cars are gray. Boots, shoes, suits, hats, gloves are gray. Horses, sheep, cows, cats killed in the road, squirrels in the same way, sparrows, doves, and pigeons, all are gray, everything is gray, and everyone is out of luck who lives here."

-William H. Gass, ITHOTHOTC- p. 199

Pretty much. A Mayor is really just a figure-head, with no real authority. As you have said, it's pretty much just for public image and little else.
