But I am certian I read on Fark that Google TV was going to smash Apple TV to pieces and be in every home.

Wasn't this tried already (a couple of times)? I guess I missed this massive launch, wtf is Google TV?

I just RTFA.

The CEO admitted that it was a mistake, recognized where and how the mistake was made, and is willing to walk away from this rather than sink more money in an attempt to soothe his pride and "force" something to work.

I like this guy. And I like that he's leading Logitech.

Both Google TV and Apple TV suck.

Google sucks because they aren't able to deliver all of the network content that they thought they would. Apple sucks because it is just another front for iTunes to sell content at ludicrously high levels.

HTPC+HDHomerun+Netflix/Amazon Prime/Hulu = WINNING

De Luca suggested that Google TV was far from ready at launch, going so far as to call it "beta" software on one presentation slide

Sounds like damn near everything that Google pushes. How long was Gmail in 'beta'?

HTPC + Plasma TV + internet + RSS reader + Media Center software = 1 day behind, at most, on all the shows I watch. I use a remote control, it's got a better interface than netflix. And I can self-stream to myself from anywhere in the world. And I can watch *ANYTHING*. Basically, this is what google tv / apple tv should be, and will never achieve.

If this were available as a commercial service I'd pay $50/month for it, forever. Too bad it's not, and likely will never be.

I was in the market for something like this....bought a roku player instead.

2011-11-11 12:17:42 PM
I actually rather like the thing. It needs some more work, but it's pretty good. Not ready for the general public, though.

2011-11-11 12:22:41 PM
It's really limited if you don't have cable TV. I bought it because it was $99, had a wireless keyboard with TV control functions, a web browser (which sucks; I really hope it's better in 3.1), and Netflix streaming in HD.

They released the thing for $299, and for that price you could pick up a budget-model PC with a full OS to hook up as your HTPC.

I'll probably pick one up now that it's getting market access. But yeah, 300 dollars for a beta product = no.

I'm just hoping someone (google or third party) adds DVR to the platform.

If only he'd do something about what they've done to their trackballs... The current generation of of them is just too damn small.

You want to make a killing at that price?

Open the @#(* box up. ALL OF IT. Let us run XBMC on it. There are a ton of people buying ATV2s just for that purpose, even though you still have to run iOS and such.

Also, don't make it $299.

Lexx: If this were available as a commercial service I'd pay $50/month for it, forever. Too bad it's not, and likely will never be.

Yep, with what sickbeard, couchpotato, sabnzbd and XBMC give me. Yeah, I'd go legit and start paying $50 a month. I'd even let an ad or two here slip (Targeted ads even!, Show me the latest fancy gadgets and not tampons). You sort out what TV shows I'm watching (It's not that many, they're just spread across 10 different channels) and pay the content providers accordingly.

You blind hatred for one company appears to have impeded your ability to discern actual facts.

If you rip DVDs into the right format and load them into iTunes, they will play just fine on an AppleTV. Or Torrent. Plus Netflix. Whether or not it is better than the cheaper Roku solution, I'll leave to others to say.

AIOS HD is my favorite media streaming device right now. Handles any format you can throw at it has slots for 2 HDs and costs $99.

Which is the normal setup for any evening programming of moderately-popular shows on TV as well. Does it really surprise you that the profit sustainability spot would be about the same for broadcast/cable TV and online streaming TV?

//Since they don't follow the standard expanding-break-time-with-length, you're talking significantly fewer commercials fora one-hour program (well, 42-44 mins, really) and a basically negligible amount for a movie. Stop yer complaining.

Plex is the win.. runs on pc / mac - shares the library via the mycloud to ios/android and other pc/mac installs.. plays pretty much anything.... can run plex apps on roku, samsung tvs and blue ray players etc.

they were like $189 at fry's over over the last six months. I bought two and gave them to my dad for his birthday because he was watching netflix on a old laptop hooked up to tv.
I like it. fairly straight forward way to f*ck around on the internet a bit and watch netflix without getting off the couch when I see them. I have no idea what the f*ck google tv is though somehow. is that the name of the browser or os or something?

Logitech has won my heart with their Harmony remotes. They can do no wrong, as far as I'm concerned. If I found out that every time I turned on my TV with a Harmony remote, they had to drown a puppy, I would assume that they, in their wisdom, had a good reason for doing so.

That is all.

There are websites that stream live sports. I don't really want to name any names since DHS has been trying to crack down on them, but they are out there and relatively easy to find.

Who the hell wants to watch live sports in their own home? Sporting events are only bearable if you partake of them in a crowded sports bar where you can feed off the excitement of the crowd (and beer!).

Shameless self promotion, but those of you that have a Roku, when you purchase or watch channels produced by Flickstream.com, you are allowing me and my children to eat.

I've been using your trackballs for about 20 years or so. I don't know why but no other company can make trackballs worth a shiat and you cannot do anything good except make trackballs. Your other peripherals suck - give us a break.

Their keyboards and mics are good, decent speakers a few years back. Their trackballs have gone down hill a bit.

Uh... if you say so. We'll just keep on streaming Netflix to ours. And watching HD video podcasts of TED talks (which iTunes "sells" us for free). And using our iPhones as remotes that can control not only the AppleTV itself, but also control streaming of stuff to it from computers on our WLAN.

Yes, that last bit is major single-vendor lock-in, which is probably a much more persuasive argument if you're trying to convince people that Apple sucks.

Of course nobody addressed the iTunes price points.

Also, sorry iSheep, I know you think that you were first to the party with this, but users that actually know how computers and electronics work have done all of that for years. For not very much money. I also have the added bonus of not having everything I ever watch or do recorded onto Apple's servers. Sleep tight Apple fans. I am sure Apple would never divulge all of your DMCA violations....

Boxee box + firstrowsports.eu = all the live hockey or football one can want for free.

Recently wall mounted a 32" LCD above my 52" big screen so I can watch 2 games at once. Planning to make it 2 32" screens above the big screen for ultimate football viewing.

20 minutes? You should upgrade your connection. 2.6 MB/s on Comcast... is 3.5x what my college had for its entire connection in 2001. 30 Minute TV shows take a bathroom break to get. And like I said in another thread, if you charged for this, even tossed in targeted commercials (NO TAMPON COMMERCIALS) I would pay for this service. Nope, they'd rather do it the way they do it.

Especially if it's something that appears in Nova Scotia or gets sent over feed satelites. For some reason NCIS was coming in a day early for the first few episodes.

I'm not talking about data speeds you mofo. I'm talking about the whole shows posts online in private trackers 20 minutes after it airs on TV. So I will have the show 20 minutes after it airs which means cable is not needed. and Yes I get 50mb down on FIOS so speed is of little concern to me.
