When did Australia get denialists? It's been a strictly American phenomenon, limited to evangelicals.

I'm curious if any is familiar with this legislation.

Is this one similar to the laws saying pi=3 ?

"The average global temperature shall not vary by more than 1 degree celsius in any given year on penalty of fines and imprisonment"

2011-11-11 09:19:29 AM
HotIgneous Intruder: Why do people fight death so hard?

Because millions of years of evolution has shaped us that way. If you don't fight death hard, you don't pass on your genes.

If this is your world view, why did you bother to get out of bed this morning?

2011-11-11 09:21:38 AM
So, what I'm hearing is that any laws that attempt to incentivize the reduction greenhouse gas emissions are symbolic and too small to make an impact. Moreover, anything that goes beyond subtle prodding with incentives is a draconian imposition on the free market that will crash the economy and allow the Illuminati to convert us all to Satanism. Therefore, since nobody can come up with a solution that we like, we should pretend global warming isn't happening. Got it.

HotIgneous Intruder: Why do people fight death so hard?

Some people don't. They die sooner.

Since the World's oceans' sea-level has gone DOWN for the last three years, I think that the problem has already been solved.

The Chesapeake Bay (new window) clearly broke the law when it began forming 12,000 years ago when the present interglacial warming period started and the glacial ice began melting and raising sea levels.

I propose a stiff fine.

You'll never guess from the linked article who the parent corporation of the Herald Sun is. Oh, wait. You could.

wildcardjack: I'm curious if any is familiar with this legislation.

It's rather striking that the article could blather on for that many words without mentioning the content of the legislation, other than "It's a tax! Booga booga!"

They did find room for:
There has been no further melting of the Arctic ice cap since 1997.

Data courtesy of NOAA/NSIDC.

They did find room for:
The European Space Agency's Envisat satellite system for measuring sea level shows no further rise over the past seven years.

www.jpl.nasa.gov

Data courtesy of NASA/JPL.

They did find room for:
The US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has found no rise in the global ocean heat content since 2002.

Why 2002? Because if you pick any other year, or just look at the overall trend, you'd draw a very different conclusion:

www.nodc.noaa.gov

Data courtesy of NOAA. Manuscript available from ftp://ftp.nodc.noaa.gov/pub/data.nodc/woa/PUBLICATIONS/grlheat08.pdf.

From that same data source:
"We have previously reported estimates of the variability of the ocean heat content (OHC) of the world ocean [Levitus et al., 2000, 2005a]. The warming trend in OHC dominated earth's heat balance during the past fifty years [Levitus et al., 2001] and the trend has been attributed to the increase in greenhouse gases in earth's atmosphere by Levitus et al. [2001] and Barnett et al. [2001, 2005] among others."

Fair and Balanced, Australia edition!

I now return you to the same small cadre of trolls spamming the thread with irrelevant comments they pasted in from their talking point blogs.

Laws will not stop climate change. Jailing the financiers and boards of directors of the largest polluters in the world in stead of letting them get away with Mass environmental destruction and Second degree murder, and giving them massive tax breaks so the don't actually pay any tax and then can pay any of the marginal fees leveled against them. They have done it throughout the US and now have moved on to Third World usually leaving Tax payers to clean up the waste and devastating the most vulnerable populations, these companies have entire legal teams to get away with their crimes against humanity for profit. Till this happens most Laws are developed by those same companies to limit competition not save the environment.

Thanks for bringing some facts and reason to the thread chimp ninja, considering that article had none. I'm just glad our government is taking the issue seriously, which is much better than the dithering of the Howard government before it. This tax is actually offset with tax cuts in other areas, and payments to low income earners to help them cope with higher energy bills ( as it is a somewhat regressive tax) but it's only the first stage, as it will transition into a carbon trading market in 2014. It's a good start, now we just need to get other nations to follow suit.

Meanwhile, we already have legalized prostitution subby, so go pay someone to Suck on that!

2011-11-11 10:21:05 AM
More reasonable article from the BBC is here.

Basically, the 500 largest polluters in Australia will be required to pay $23 AUS (~$23 US) for each ton of carbon discharged into the environment.

Hopefully, this will help spur the Australian wind industry-- they presently only derive ~2% of their electricity from wind, whereas several countries in Europe have surpassed 10%. They're also well-poised to use PV, fission, tidal, and geothermal.

Curiously, they mine 23% of the world's uranium and don't have a single fission plant despite having tons of available space for siting and disposal.
