And you know the picture has to be awesome when the fire chief calls it awesome.

FTFA: Naples Fire Department Battalion Chief Pete DiMaria, said Birch leaned toward the barrel after the fire didn't react to additional kerosene. The vapors from the accelerant caught fire, lapping at Birch's right arm as he wore a short-sleeved scouts' uniform.

"The fire first kicked up for a brief moment and the crowd panicked a little bit," DiMaria said. "Having us there was key. That kept the mood kind of calm. (Attendees) knew we were there to handle the situation in an efficient manner."

Hey. Yeah. Great job of supervision there, Chief DiMaria.

"I think the important thing is not to panic and to do what we're taught - stop, drop and roll and put the fire out."

I think the important thing to do is not reach your arm into a dmn fire, you moron.

Giving kids fire and knives and a relatively unsupervised environment gets you much more impressive incidents, the guy was just setting a good example.

/only noteworthy because of where it happened, not what happened.

Here's a method for retiring anything under 40 feet up.

It's the official way to retire them. Here's a handy guide:

Folded, placed in the fire or ignited, generally as part of a ceremony = you're retiring a flag.

On a staff, lit on fire and being waved around, usually at a protest = you're a farking douche.

//Knowing is half the battle, I guess.

The proper way to dispose of an American Flag after it has been deemed unfit to display is to burn it. Not as a display of disdain or protest, but as a reminder of the fact that this symbol stands for the sacrifice made by countless courageous men and women to preserve the ideals upon which this great country of ours was founded, in a ceremony rife with tradition and respect. It should not be displayed if it's tattered, worn, torn. If your an American and you don't know this, then you need to re-educate yourself about what it means to be an AMERICAN.

It is my understanding that one should separate the 'Union' from the Stripes and burn the striped cloth first and then the union such that one is no longer burning the flag but instead what was once a flag.

Finally, it is required by law to be done with a respectful ceremony.

Cyno01: Thats what they get for burning flags, farking hippies.

That's how you destroy damaged flags, you dumbass. I did that when I was Quartermaster in my Scout troop. I had the color guard advance with the damaged flag draped over a steel pole. I then ordered them to hold said pole over the bonfire, and ordered the entire troop to salute and hold until the flag fell into the embers. By far, the most patriotic way to do so.

Actually, the best flag retirement ceremony I've seen was one where the flag was cut up and each of the 13 stripes and the field of blue had a "meaning."

Said ceremony:

"I like to watch Delaware burn. I like to watch Pennsylvania burn. I like to watch New Jersey burn. [etc through all 13] I like to watch the nation burn!"

It's not very patriotic of you to call that the best ceremony.

1. While yes, the stripes represent the 13 colonies, that wasn't the ceremony.

2. You're just upset that you can't burn Iowa.

other things! You'd better burn your shirt and your pants! Be sure to
burn your TV and car! Oh yes, and don't forget to burn your house!
Because none of those things could exist without six red stripes, seven
red stripes, and a helluva lot of stars!!"

Convention yes, but law no. Burning a flag in a disrespectful manner is protected speech. As it should be, as it would be a cruel irony to take away a freedom in order to protect its symbol.

Fair enough. I was under the impression that it was one of those 'unenforced' laws.

I stand, proudly, corrected.

Waste of effort.

1. Post American flags to the Middle East
2. Bomb brown people

Let (human) nature do the rest.

Job done.

Someone was never a scout, "but with kerosene" is a good chunk of the manual.

/kidding about the handbook, but most scouts are mild to moderate pyromaniacs.

We never got the full fire demo in scouts, but we did learn at camp that if everything is wet from rain the night before: The easiest way to start a fire is with gas and when in need for gas find a hose and a car.

We also learned that you need to move your mouth when siphoning before the gas comes all the way up the hose. Nothing more impressive then a buddies dad bent over the weeds puking up gas.

It's the context. The answer to "is it patriotic?" is the same as "Are you burning the flag because it's worn, faded or otherwise unusable to dispose of it respectfully?"

A little of both. It's on the books, but it's unenforceable as such due to the First Amendment in most cases. I'm hesitant to say all cases, because if you're burning a flag just to be a pyromaniac and not to make a statement, that wouldn't be speech.

Same, force of habit. As a Troop Guide and as an employee of the Cascade Pacific Council, wouldn't surprise me if almost everyone in the Sunrise District carried my signature on their Tote'n'chip or Whittlin'chip at one point or another. Heck, I had one I issued to myself after one of my coworkers threw my wallet into McKay Creek (and couldn't find it after I sent him in after it).

2011-11-11 10:26:08 AM
I dunno about this "retirement" - most of the flags they were burning looked fine to me - not even faded or anything. I've seen far worse still flying.

And, besides, wasn't the "star spangled banner" that inspired F. Scott Key to convert an old drinking song into our national anthem, a tattered wreck? Just sayin'...
