Well, we found the one thing that Republicans and Democrats can agree on at this point, although I'm guessing it took at least 5 drafts before they could agree on the exact wording

I don't understand all the outrage. University football programs and rape are as integral as bananas and peels. Sure you can get peels without the bananas, but there will never be bananas without the peels. If you allow a university to have a football program you are either an idiot or you accept that a) participants in the program will indulge in rape, and b) the university will work really hard to cover it up until it can't, and then there will be enough firings that the cycle can continue.

Paterno must have pissed off some people at ESPN.

ESPN sure has not made any effort to remove former Penn St president Graham Spanier from his position as BCS Oversight Chairman. I guess abetting the rape of boys is good experience when raping Boise State....because ESPN does not want Boise in the BCS

Of course, ESPN is still going to carry the Penn St-Nebraska game....after they have attacked Paterno and pumped up the story....now they will get the great ratings for all the ambulance chasers and pervs who will watch their first football game ever.....But its for the Childrens...

Paterno, Mike McQueary are not the real problems here.....ESPN and other media outlets have been making some good ratings $$$ on the backs of raped little boys. That is disgusting

Oh, and you think that Board of Trustees at Penn State is innocent too? Really? If the head coach, AD, VP, President all covered up...the Board has been, too

Raping Boise state? Please.

I actually hope they get into the BCS championship so LSU or Alabama can crush them and stop the whining.

And do you honestly think ESPN shouldn't broadcast the game on Saturday?

I'd be the last to defend the media and I also hate our voyeuristic, ratings-above-morals society, but I would hardly say that in this case they are the 'real problems' over a guy who actually raped a kid. It isn't like the media involvement resulted in allowing more rapes, if anything it's caused more victims to come forward. They'll be making that ratings money either way.

It wouldn't have been for coaching football, it would have been for the positive influence he had on youth over his long and storied carrer. Paterno taught many generations that had work, integrity, and honesty were some of the most important qualities you can have and the keys to not just living your life but in helping others achieve their full potential. Well that and it's socially and morally acceptable to allow and enable a formerstudent, long-time friend and pedophile to serially rape children. Apparently some people have a hard time with that last part.

I'm not a sports fan so perhaps I don't 'get' all this worship of the players and coaches. It's a game and has nothing to do with scholastics.

These awards are more about the giver than the receiver. They allow some worthless politician to bask in the glory of somebody else. I suppose withdrawing the award allows them to show their moral superiority as well.

that is what i'm wondering about. cause from what i've seen of comments about him is that he was the doing molesting and such when that isn't even the case it was one of the coaches on his staff. yet people seem to label him as a pedophile..

"apparently reported the allegations to his boss" if true i doubt it will do anything to save the reputation/legacy he's all ready lost due to the case.

FTFA: "In light of the recent events in State College, we are rescinding our support for the nomination of Joe Paterno for the Presidential Medal of Freedom," Sens. Pat Toomey, a Republican, and Bob Casey, a Democrat, said in a joint statement.

Glad they can work together on important issues like this, while squabbling pointlessly over the issues that actual effect the future of this country.

No offense but that's the dumbest farking thing I've ever heard. You would give up friends just because they went to Penn St? Unless they personally diddled some kids or were involved in the scandal I don't get your reasoning. Seems exceedingly juvenile to me.

yeah, he helped build penn state into penn state. seriously, he helped vastly improve the university. further, his players played with honor and graduated at a much higher rate than either other football programs or the penn state student body. he gave so much back to penn state. unfortunately, he also may have lead a cover-up of child-farking for the last 9-13 years, which is frowned upon in this establishment.

I hope PA law enforcement isn't as incompetent/corrupt at riot control as it is at catching Pedos. They'd better have every off duty cop in the state patrolling Happy Valley and State College on Saturday, with the National Guard at the closest base on stand by.

I'm assuming it was named before this story broke in April (and the events of the past few days). It was the only real choice for the Big Ten then since the guy has been around forever. It's ironic though that it was named after someone who didn't coach a Big Ten team until the 1990s.

I'm betting it goes nameless for a few years. The only other big names I can think of are Bo and Woody. They share a trophy name already and there would be a riot if one was picked over the other.
