Rolf made some disparaging comments about gays and was asked to leave the production.

In the past, the Oscars attempted to appeal to a younger audience.

But they finally figured out that these days, only senior citizens actually keep an appointment to watch television on Sunday evening. Younguns are all about social networking, video games and smart phones. They never learned how to sit still for commercial breaks...

Ah, ok. Just went and looked it up, he was uncredited. I had read an article earlier that said Analyze That was his last film, and I was going off of that. Plus he's done some voice work.

Whoa! Don't do a GIS for Billy Crystal farking sucks, with safe search off. Gaah!

My point still stands. The man is just not funny. I grew up with him, and as a kid seeing him in Princess Bride, Throw Momma From the Train, City Slickers... And as a kid I measured a films quality that he was in as if it was good despite him being in it. He strikes me as the guy who hams it up at parties or functions, and people are too polite to tell him he sucks, then politely laugh, and through not being told he sucks, he thinks he's a real riot. The most awkward, embarrassed for him that he doesn't know he should be embarrassed is on the the First season of SNL (maybe first episode) where he tries to imitate Louis Armstrong or some shiat and kept saying "Can ya dig it? I knew that you could!" in this disturbing, borderline racist caricature of a prototypical 40's black jazz musician. God, it makes me want to punch him in the face down a flight of stairs.

Look behind the scenes people. One of the biggest reasons Billy Crystal was such a big hit at the Oscars was he had writer Bruce Vilanch writing for/with him. Bruce was the main writer for the Oscars for 20+years.

If he and Bruce have teamed up for this, everyone will love it.

Ok perhaps, but why not go Neil Patrick Harris, a gay man who is on a hit TV show and who can sing and dance. The old folks know him as doogie and he's relevant to young folks. Failing that, Hugh Jackman was good a few years ago and could keep it relevant and again he;s on broadway so he does the song and dance numbers. Nothing against BIlly Crystal, just wonder as the other possibilities.

It would be nice, but recently their choice have been limited. If Hugh Jackman was "good", they haven't hit it out of the park for a few years, i.e, go back to what works. Billy knows his topical his jokes, timing. If they could have gotten Harris, they probably would have by now. And again, someone probably wants the ratings back, and they know who can do that.

I don't think there's a single comedian ever in the history of ever in all the world of ever who could "turn off" their sense of humor. They have got to be the hardest people in the world to deal with on a day to day basis.

Many comics save their funny for the stage, but yeah, there are also plenty of the "always on, never funny" variety as well. Usually the more laughs they're getting onstage, the less need to be on when offstage. Both varieties are generally insufferable in their own way.

Billy Crystal is a solid Oscar host - professional, hard-working, amusing, but not hilarious. I guess he'll be fine. I'm more looking forward to the Golden Globes.

Billy is filming a movie here in Georgia.

He should be finished in a few weeks then it goes into post-production.

Thanks, subby. Now the theme from Soap is stuck in my head.

On another subject, why not have Martin Short host the Oscars? He's been in a few Hollywood movies, he can sing and dance, he can be hysterically funny in the right circumstances, and he has the appropriate snarky iconoclastic attitude for the Oscars.

I think he'd be great!
