I sometimes see pigeons walking and flying around TTC subway stations. I have yet to see one actually board a train, but it's just a matter of time.

They keep this up, they'll be candidates for uplift.

We have a pigeon in our station that had a bum leg. He just hobbles around and it really sad. I bring him some bread crumbs every so often. I am weird.

One day we'll finally realize that birds are one hell of a lot smarter than we think they are. I saw a documentary once about how birds can learn. They'll use tools, they'll make abstract decisions. You keep changing the setup and they'll keep figuring out how to open the door and make the seed pellet drop out.

I also read not long ago about how crows will learn on what days the garbage trucks move through various neighborhoods. They're there, right on time, to pick up the crumbs. If it's Monday it must be the Highland Estates.

Next time I realize that I've forgotten to get the trash out on time, I'll shake my fists at the sky and yell, "FREAKIN' BIRDS ARE SMARTER THAN I AM!"

Although there is an issue concerning pigeon droppings and respiratory ailments, pigeons are very intelligent birds.

I used to feed the pigeons at the office, until security got on me about it. It used to crack me up to watch this one huge male keep following the security guard on his rounds. The bird would even stand with him at the intersection, waiting for cross traffic to clear, then cross with him. This pigeon used to make it his mission to keep the grackles moving along and make sure the other pigeons didn't fight on the plaza.

Pigeons also remember the faces of those that abuse them: a lawyer at the office, during an outdoor meeting, kicked at the big boss pigeon. From that moment on, the guy could not walk out of the building without a pigeon crapping on him.

read up about crows and the experiments that scientists have been doing with them. Crows can learn and remember distinct faces. Not only that they can tell /other/ crows about you and if they should avoid you or if you are "ok", and they pass it down through generations of other crows. Fascinating critters.

ProfessorOhki: What the hell pigeon? You CAN FLY. If I had wings, you'd certainly never find me taking the subway.

Not unless you enjoy eating much more food to power your flight muscles. Birds only fly if they have to, too much flying drains their energy and makes starvation more likely.

ktybear: Crows are very clever birds - a great video to watch

Saw a report on TV where researchers captured crows and released them. The captured crows taught the other mob members, and even the children, to identify the dangerous individuals.

Anyone who has stood and watched crows for awhile knows how clever they are.
One of the smartest wild animals in North America, I would say.
