Awkward tag any one?

Like the Royal Family would let anything happen to William so that the bastard son Prince Harry would be next in line for the throne. Although Prince Harry would make an interesting king, it would be like letting Prince Phillip rule the Monarchy.

Why is this bad?

There's nothing down there but birds and whales and blasted heaths.
Sounds like a plumb -- if remote -- assignment.

Wills flies sea kings and stuff, right?
It's Harry that's the bada$$ed apache pilot who was porking that cocktail girlie.

I've always been fascinated by the Falklands War. It and the Israeli invasion of Lebanon turned me into a news junkie around age 11. I really want to go there sometime... the wife says "have fun". It's going to be a while now, need to wait until the boys are old enough to accompany me if they choose. If/when I finally get a chance to go I hope they still have the RAF flights available, I've always wanted to plan a one-week trip to the UK followed by a RAF flight down there (which might have some influence in my wife's lack of interest), and then perhaps a LAN flight back via Chile. I hope it's still in British hands then... I seriously doubt whether Britain has the mean or will to defend it nowadays.

And the Falklands War inspired the best Newsweek cover ever...

Considering that the only military equipment of any real power station there is a destroyer, guided missile cruiser and 4 Eurofighters, they'd have a good chance.

It's not like the UK has a lot of options anymore, in regards to overseas assignments where people aren't trying to kill you. He should get a NATO post though, in Africa. That would be challenging.

What does Argentina have? I doubt they have the cashflow (especially these days) to project any real power....

obligatory NMA reference:

And now it's the repeats
Plugging the Falklands and the Falklands' spirit
Show the pictures again and again
Till the next war comes around
'Cause we'll kill if we only have something to kill for
We'll die if we only have something to die for
We'll cheer if we only have something to cheer for
That is worthy of the name
Oh yes the next war (I never believed it)
See the propaganda in TV fiction (I never believed it)
Enemies with horns and tails

There are dead men in the South Atlantic
It's meant to warm our hearts
They think that they died for you and me
Oh God, what a farce, what a farce
There's crippled men back home in England
Doesn't it warm your hearts
They think they fought for peace and freedom
Poor boys, what a farce, what a farce

Some junky Mriage III, some Israeli Fingers (Mirage 5 knockoff) and surprsingly some Su-29s that they could slap some missiles on.

As far as their navy goes, a handful of destroyers, some subs and like, 9 corvettes. I imagine they could take the islands, holding them would be a different story.

Harry would be in position to move up in succession as well as marry his brother's wife, Catherine. However, last time this happened, things did not go well.

Will he have to marry Kate, like Ned Stark does his dead bro's wife in Game of Thrones?

r1niceboy: Argentina should feel free to try. It worked out so well for them last time.

actually right now would be the best time to try. Unlike 1982, RN currently has ZERO active aircraft carriers (the only remaining carrier left HMS Illustrious has been converted strictly to helo carrier) It has no fixed-wing strike capability after all it's Harriers were retired from service.

2011-11-10 07:59:32 PM
No way could Argentina take the Falklands again. There is a large garrison there that would be enough to stop cold any invasion force Argentina could scrape together. Intelligence would pick up the signs of the invasion preparation and the current spearhead battalion would be at Mount Pleasant within 24 hours. More Euofighter Typhoons would quickly follow. You can also pretty much guarantee that an SSN would be ready to trash the Argie airbase within Falklands range with Tomahawks.

The RN's Type 45 destroyers could handle the Argentine air threat. They're probably the most capable AA shps in the world at the moment. And the airbase the planes fly from would get hammered by sub-launched cruise missiles.

Argentina would have to hit the airbase and the destroyer. Send in the Fingers first, almost at wave level, follow up with ground attack, try and catch the planes on the ground. Su-29s would follow to engage any Eurofighter that did get off the ground. After that, harass ground forces.

After that, use the many islands in the Falkands as radar screens for their corvettes to give a small advantage when defending. (radar installations on the islands for them)

Withdraw the airforce, make landing points as rugged as possible. Set up remote machine gun stations to cut down on Argentine losses. Argentine would probably have to buy a decent SAM system, maybe from India.

Hong Kong is up for grabs
London is full of 'Rabs
We could be in Palestine
Overrun by a Chinese line
With the boys from the Mersey and the Thames and the Tyne
But there's no danger
It's a professional career
Though it could be arranged
With just a word in Mr. Churchill's ear
If you're out of luck you're out of work
We could send you to Johannesburg

Sounds like one of the dullest deployment/assignments ever. Far away from any cities (you're obviously not going to Buenos Aires for a bit of R&R). Not hot models and clubs. The islands seem pretty small and barren. Seems you'd get "island fever" pretty quick.

Every war needs a soundtrack. Even the Falklands.
Here are the Billboard top 10 hits of 1982.

Too bad the weapons have changed over the years... we could have a second match of FN-FAL vs L1A1 .. which is better, metric (my preference) vs inch pattern?

Not to rehash too much from the last Falklands thread, but I still think the Brits would be well served to hold a few Tomahawks while reminding Argentina that they have plenty of nice soft economic targets and air defenses that amount to Jack and shiat.

They do take the Falklands pretty seriously - street vendors have Malvinas pins, maps, etc, and if you take the highways anywhere, you'll see these signs (except much newer, obviously recently posted) everywhere:

And of course people get pretty worked up about it, at least the ones I talked to.

Good news. The boredom of postings there gave rise to some interesting games amongst the men. Perhaps he'll get to play Freckles ..or if he gets really lucky they'll let him play a round of 'Suicide Freckles' (you have your mouth open).

Just tell the Argentinians that William's got 2 Gurhka bodyguards. An invasion force would head straight back home even if they had to swim there.
