Quote from the Well Fargo Manager is gold:
Wells Fargo spokesman Ruben Pulido said the move demonstrates that Occupy Oakland recognizes the value and service the bank provides its customers.

It's ironic because they want to do away with all banks and all monetary systems and live on granola and bong hits. Right?
Wait, what? Oh, they just want to improve the operational ethics and regulatory environment of these institutions? I see.
Carry on proudly then, Ironic tag.

I don't see why this is a big surprise. It's Oakland.
Besides, it's probably best to get the funds stored somewhere, ANYWHERE.. before the police swoop in and steal it. Obviously drug money.

An Occupy statement says the money only will be with Wells Fargo temporarily while they work to establish an account with a credit union or community bank.

They want people to be able to donate anywhere in the country by going into a Wells fargo, ask to deposit to that account, and when offered services tell them to fark off and die.
Protest movements against banks have done that in other countries. It's quite successful in the damage to morale of the company as a whole.

if you are fighting against what you allege to be over the top greed, impropriety, fraud and undue influence exerted by large financial institutions, you probably don't want to stash your protest funds at the 4th largest financial institution in the country and the 24th largest in the world.
It looks funny.

Just sayin'
(new window)
OAKLAND, Calif. [November 8, 2011]
Since the October 26 announcement of a donation following the police
raid on Occupy Oakland, some have wondered how these funds are being
handled. At Monday night's General Assembly, Occupy Oakland voted on
the next steps needed to make use of the $20,000 which Occupy Wall
Street donated to the Oakland encampment. Resulting from that
consensus vote, Occupy Oakland is in the process of opening an
unincorporated association in its name in the state of California.
The money is temporarily being placed into the Wells Fargo trust fund
of lawyer Timothy Fong. It will stay there for less than two weeks
while Occupy Oakland establishes the new, unincorporated account with
either a credit union or a community bank. Timothy Fong himself is in .
the process of moving his accounts out of Wells Fargo-and he- as well
as Occupy Oakland as a whole - urges other people to leave the multinational
banks as well.
And then there was this afterwards:
An Open Letter to Occupy Oakland

2011-11-10 05:53:53 PM
This is entirely unsurprising. There's many cases where the people protesting the banks keep their money in the banks.
They recognize good service and value as much as they recognize their desire to be seen as "in the right scene" with their friends.
The banks don't mind. Protest all you want. It's obvious you're keeping your money there.

Now the question, is Wells Fargo going to confiscate the funds to pay for the damage to a Wells Fargo branch...caused by the same protestors who deposited $20K?
Would that be irony?

Just want to remind you guys that Wells Fargo was actually one of the big banks that did not have a ton of crap on the balance sheet. They were forced to participate in Tarp so they wouldn't make other Banks look weak.

It's funny, but the argument isn't about the existence or basic functions of banks as repositories of money, but rather their behavior with that money and the impacts on the larger economic world that come with it.
But it's still funny.

Couldn't do that without court order. Ironically, if the Occupy was organized as a corporation, it would be easier.
