FTFA:

Over the period of four weeks of treatment, the obese monkeys dropped 27 percent of their abdominal fat, and became notably less insulin resistant. Monkeys that were already thin didn't shed pounds at all, meaning it might only target extra weight, not the stuff we need to survive.

I definitely am fat. I would totally be in favor of a pill that made me not fat, without having to do anything.

Curious on what the limit is for how tubby you have to be for this to work. Also this has nothing to do with the desire to eat nothing but pizza for a month.

See, that's the part that doesn't make sense to me. The body is storing that fat because it doesn't need the energy. So when all this extra fat starts showing up in the form of dying adipose cells, it's not like the body needs that energy either. So "just metabolize it" seems like you're just playing (metabolic) musical chairs. I don't see how this is doing anything more than setting you up for a blood clot or a heart attack.

Also, I'd like to know what an obese monkey looks like.

keiverarrow: Isn't the brain mostly fat?

Maybe yours is.....

I think you are referring to Myelin, which is mainly lipid, and functions as an insulator for nerve cells (neurons). The drug described in the article targets cells whose specific function is to store fat reserves. Two very different things.

Possible outcome number one: This drug never reaches market due to a side effect.

Possible outcome number two: This drug is priced as highly as possible by its makers. The price will be set just under health cost savings predicted by actuarials for not being a fat arse.

Possible outcome number three: Everyone takes this all the time. Everyone is thin. Everyone is shocked at how many people remain unfarkable because they are still fugly.

This! As a former and current fatty trying to be a former fatty again, I would opt for the pill popping instead of the work. I lost 65 pounds the hard way 10 years ago (took me a year to do it). Kept it off for 7 years, but in the last 3 years I put 40 of it back on. With arthritis in my hips, back and knees, as well as a lot less time to spend at the gym, it's much tougher this time around.

Aha! But with obese people will you really be able to tell if it's a side effect of the drug or just the Taco Bell?

Those comments were seriously depressing.

Why can't people just be happy that an awesome drug that could potentially change a lot of lives is under development?

People really suck sometimes.

There is nothing scarier than the thought of augmented Taco Bell diarrhea. It'd be a warm, wet shower of poo.

the human population turns into Canadian Geese, eating and pooping at the same time

or until we eat everything in sight, demanding more and more resources to fill our gaping maws that we destroy all of nature and everything around us, just so that we don't have to do a sit-up

One of the great coups of my nerd-dom is getting my non-nerd girlfriend to watch the David Tennant Doctor Who with me. She absolutely LOVED the cute little adipose thingies.
